Here's a roster question: why can't the Brewers simply release John Axford instead of moving him to the 60 day DL? He will not be able to pitch again this season, contract is guaranteed, he will be a free agent after 2021.

I'm sure that the union would have something to say about that. The Brewers are 100% responsible for his medical care.

Probably a bad look and would piss off the players union if they release a guy due to injury when he is already out for the season (not taking a roster spot) and a free agent at year end. Plus it lets the player have access to your medical staff and the facilities for rehab.

...and being responsible for his medical care isn't going to change if they release him or not.

Service time arguments maybe for pension benefits, but still.

The Brewers have until November 7th to reinstate the four players from the 60 day dl. All four are on the bubble but since they have the room I assume all will be kept for now. Curtiss/Topa will likely get put back on the 60 day as soon as they are allowed to in the spring.

So they decided not to protect anybody else I guess.

It would appear so. What I see is Mathias was outrighted and they keep 5 open roster spots for the time being. No signings reported or announced.

The Brewers currently have the highest number of open 40-man roster spots in the NL, and only trail the A’s overall who have 6 open spots. There are 13 teams with full 40-man rosters.

Have to imagine some additions are on the horizon fairly soon.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Maybe because of 2020 there could be a few rule 5s that interest in taking? Guys maybe at A+ and very little AA level who normally would been AA and AAA level protected by teams. Take the RP attempt or maybe even a Catcher the team is mildly behind(not for 2022 but beyond)

You also have spots to sign FAs without needing to remove a player from the 40man to do so.
