Mets Trade for AJ Ramos

It somewhat seems strange, but the New York Mets, currently with a 47-53 record, have acquired reliever A.J. Ramos from the Marlins (LINK). Ramos is controlled through next season.

Could be that Reed is getting traded, and they saw an opportunity to secure next seasons closer already, at a price they're OK with. Or Reed isn't getting traded, but not getting extended either.

That makes some sense, it just seems peculiar that Ramos was traded within the division to a team with a worse record. The guy probably thought he was going to be in a pennant race and now he is on a team looking up at the Marlins in the standings.

 

Doesn't seem like the Mets gave up a ton, Gonzalez was ranked their #9 prospect on MLB Pipeline and Cespedes was #22 on that same list.

Perhaps there is a bigger issue w/ Familia that will impact next season. Now the Mets have some coverage for next year if Familia is not back...

If he is back, then they have a good 1-2 in the pen..

It's been the trend all month where relievers just aren't fetching as much as prior years.

If relievers can be had for this friggin cheap, why the heck is Wily Peralta still occupying a valuable spot on the 25 man roster?

They may have rule 5 problems as well. They cleared 1 spot here and can clear 1 more by trading Reed.

Having Chapman and Miller both going on the block at the same time started the bidding war that seemed to trickle down to many of the other relievers on the market. The reliever market has come back down to earth and I'd guess we won't see those same types of reliever prices again until two or three elite type relievers go on sale at the same time and really start driving up the market.

 

I think this is a pretty solid trade for both sides. Ramos is a quality reliever. Gonzalez is a solid "top 10 organizational prospect" and has a pretty good chance to have a future in the majors. His ceiling may be a #3 starter, but I'd take a 6 years of a mid- to late-rotation starter for 1.5 years of a reliever every time. Cepedes is less attractive because he is only 19 years old and is Rule 5 eligible, but he hasn't had a good 2017 so he is a very, very safe bet to not require a 40 man spot this next season. He should pass through the draft and the Marlins will get an extra year to evaluate him. But even so, he probably is only a "fringe prospect." The prospects represent about 13 million in prospect surplus value and IMO it's a pretty fair deal for both sides.

Markets have bubbles and bursts all the time. I'm just glad Stearns was able to take advantage of the crazy reliever market when he did. That helped shorten up the rebuild period.

Honestly I don't think any bubble popped. These relievers just aren't as good as ones getting the big returns. He is an OK reliever with one year left of control. Thornburg was lights out and controlled for years...not that amazing of a return all things considered(AT THE TIME). Will Smith was very good and controlled for years yet got one good prospect.

 

I don't think the reliever market was ever that insane like people made it to be. Teams were just going crazy trading off really good and controllable relievers.
