"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Yet another 2 perfect innings with 5 K's for Bickford. July + August: 13 G, 24 IP, 0 R, 9 H, 6 BB, 38 K. Also, the 9 hits were all singles.

What Bickford (or Trent Grisham or whomever) is doing is why it's so hard for teams to give up on talented players - even when struggling. Things can click. Guys can finally get healthy. Guys can make adjustments.

It doesn't happen to everyone - but it does happen. You just hate to give up on someone you see something special in.

His July OPS-A: .395

His August OPS-A: .262

Yes, that's the OPS against him those two months.

I know it seems like a crazy jump, but if the stuff plays you might as well just add him to the 40 and let him pitch a few innings in September and see what he's got. He's 24, not 19 and you need help in the pen. Anyone who isn't really needed in September and isn't a part of the future (Wilkerson, Stokes, Saladino) can probably be DFAed by this point.

If it doesn't work out you can just DFA him after the season. You have to make a decision on him anyway so it may help to take a look.

Exactly my thinking too.

He’s gonna have to be added anyhow.

There is validity in this point. The counter-point is that if the Brewers plan on not protecting him, it would behoove them to not let other teams get a look at him.

Given that the Brewers didn't send Bickford to the AFL, despite missing all of April and May, leads me to believe that there is a good chance that they will not protect him.

That’s surprising, assumed with his ridiculous pitching of late he’d be rostered. Hard to believe he wouldn’t be claimed.

What's also strange about Bickford is that the Brewers PD twitter account (official Brewers account) tweets about him all the time. Almost like they are advertising him out there to generate interest for a trade?
