What's bugging you? ~ 2022 ~

I think the threshold for a 1099 starting this year is $600.

Is this factual?

I think that is maybe what it was in the past, but I was told it changed.

Yes, but that's starting with the taxes you file in 2023 for sales in 2022. Doesn't affect sales in 2021 and taxes you pay in 2022.

Good to know, so as long as you stay below $600, we should be good to go?

Technically you have to report any money you receive regardless of amount or if you get a 1099.

Hypothetically, say I’m organizing a really nice Christmas gift for my parents and I ask my siblings to each send me $1,000 through PayPal to cover their share. Would that get reported to the IRS as income now?

If it's through PayPal I would say probably. I doubt the IRS would do anything about it though. They would have to go after a few million people in that case.

Yes since it is above the $600 point where it would be flagged. I think you would have to provide a receipt of the gift that was bought with the money. The friends and family stuff through PayPal maybe different as I believe you can create a bill through PayPal so it shouldn't be counted as income plus you could claim it as a gift and it should be under the threshold for a gift.

This is going to be annoying if I pay for lunch or dinner and someone forgets their card or phone and I have them Zelle me to pay for the meal. Though that is a lot of lunches and dinners for that to add up but something like Uber or Lyft I could see that adding up to $600 or more in a year if you split between your friends and family.

I think the $600 thing is being overblown, mostly by people politicizing it which thankfully isn't happening here. There are no new taxes, just another step to make sure they collect taxes from internet transactions that honestly I am shocked took this long. Most states started collecting sales tax on ebay and amazon a couple of years ago. I probably buy and sell about 10K a year on my hobby and have never bothered with taxes, I figure I about break even after ebay and paypal fees but I am sure if I broke it down individually I would have owed something as I have made a killing on some items. It would be nice if they made an exemption for hobbyist so we could balance what we buy and sell in a year but the government doesn't care about collectibles, they would rather we invested our money elsewhere and the 28% they want us to pay makes that crystal clear.

But he is "special"!

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of a life insurance claim being denied. ;)

Oh you are mistaken....they loooove to find ways to deny those claims.

My car insurance went up almost 20%....because of a window chip repair claim....

Insurance is such a scam, but you have to have it. Car, life, health, etc.

The most annoying part is I supposedly have "small accident forgiveness under <$500". I window chip repair is like $75. So why am I getting a price hike.

Disclaimer: No, I never had any hope an insurance company would actually grant me forgiveness.

Sucks they are easily the cheapest I can get and I have racked up $400 in deductible savings. Of course, not like another company won't just be as dumb.

Really? That seems pretty cut and dry. Once the insurer receives a death certificate, they should be able to process the claim.

My first job out of college was in a sales role for a large life and annuity company. Do they push complicated, fee-laden products on people who don’t need them? Absolutely. But I don’t recall any clients having issues with claims.

When my wife was pregnant, she tripped over the dog and chipped the diamond on her engagement ring (thankfully, she was OK). We knew our homeowner’s policy covered jewelry, so we looked into making a claim. The ring originally cost $2,500. American family was more than willing to replace the ring (yay!), but they would increase our premium by $600/year for the next 4 years (boooo!).

In the instances I have heard of close to me, usually technicalities regarding health history. One got screwed by stuff buried ridiculously deep in the fine print. Like they needed some dumb screen for cancer or something like that covered in the end.

My school is back to masking for the next 2 weeks, or until our covid numbers go down.

I knew it was bound to happen so it is what it is.

I have 4 out of 22 that are out the next 2 weeks due to testing positive.

The week before winter break I had 7 kids out. 1 tested positive, so I am assuming the others had it but didnt get tested. My kids, both under 3 years old, got sick right around that time, so maybe they got it again or maybe it was just a cold.

I have to teach art today(no prep for me...boo) because the art teacher is home with their kiddo who tested positive.

The librarian just tested positive - she was at school yesterday.

It is a never ending thing and I am just not sure how I feel about it all. I had it in August and felt pretty crummy. I got vaxxed about 3 months later and am fully vaxxed now, so I kinda wonder if I was the one transferring it to everyone but have no major symptoms.

The entire situation just sucks...

Our school has to wear masks for two weeks minimum until the numbers go down.

If 3% of our student population tests positive, that means we go to masks, if we get below 3%, no masks.

It's kind of a joke really when we know we have parents who refuse to test their kids. Hell, we have parents that refuse to answer any questions at all over the phone. They simlpy say "I am not answering that question" when asked if their kids who are staying home sick have covid symptoms or will be tested. These parents would rather their kids come to school and infect everyone else than have their kids test positive and have to be out of school for a week or longer.

Our numbers say more than 3% currently, but we have so many kids walking around like zombies, sicker than dogs, not being tested.

I'd guess we have at least 20% of our students that would probably test positive if tested, but that isn't going to happen.

Without getting political, I do wonder how many people have/had it and don't even realize because they are asymptomatic, vaxxed, or new variants are less impactful.

What a wild time to be alive...
