2022 Minor League Transaction Thread

What is the difference between 60 day and full season, other than the obvious.  Why have a separate category? I believe neither count against the stateside max list.  What was the benefit of switching Cruz to the full season IL?

Well, I just happened to notice Biloxi changed the roster status of RHP Noah Zavolas when reviewing yesterday's Milwaukee Transactions page...lo and behold:

  • RHP Noah Zavolas has been placed on the Full Season IL List by the Biloxi Shuckers

Ugh. It has absolutely been that kind of 2022 for the young hurler - who had just pitched a fantastic 4 IP out of the bullpen. Welp, hopefully he heals up and finds what was working in 2021 and builds on that.

Additionally, a minor transaction:

  • RHP Cristofher Carrasco was assigned to the DSL Brewers 1 from the DSL Brewers 2

I imagine there is some nuance here beyond our grasp of the rules changes? It could also be roster-related or contractual stipulation related or 'gaming the system' related nuance. I wish I could answer your question more authoritatively - it could literally also simply be: he was rehabbing; his window was nearing an end; favorable progress wasn't made. So, they opened up a roster spot and gave him and the training staff peace of mind with an official designation. Regardless, like I said, I don't have the definitive answer for you. And, we wish him all the best in his recovery.

This is amazing for Yujanyer Herrera, supplanting RHP Jeison Pena as the youngest pitcher for Low-A Carolina. Herrera will turn 19 years old tomorrow.

Terrific for Zavier Warren as well, so he can get back to playing at third base, after spending the past 10 days principally at first base in light of the arrival of 3B Ben Metzinger at Wisconsin. Warren struggled at the plate the first few months of 2022, but has come on strong the past 2-3 weeks.

Also winning here is Wisconsin Manager Joe Ayrault, who gets a much-needed starting pitcher in Stiven Cruz, depending on the health of Justin Bullock, Russell Smith, Max Lazar and Ryne Moore.

That's a lot of exciting transactional news today. I just came to lay these down, but @damuelle, now I'm just here to say: "Whoa!". Every one of these moves, beyond Alex Jackson's 7-Day announcement, is pretty darn exciting.

I can't comprehend how you DFA a 26-year old catcher with an OPS of .953 on the season in AA/AAA that's not a defensive liability. Maybe Reetz is quitting baseball to become a ballerina.

I mean, it's probably not as bad as Sal Bando DFA'ing 25-year old Troy O'Leary after he hit .325 over his final 13 games as a Milwaukee Brewer. But sheeeeeeeshhhhhhh!!!!!!

Obviously only 71 PAs so far, but that AAA triple slash of 212/254/424 is probably closer to his true talent level than the 281/392/636 line he posted at almost two years older than the average Southern League (or whatever its called now) batter.

Could just be a courtesy move too. If they don't intend to 40 man him through the offseason gives him a chance to maybe get a head start with an organization that has more opportunity available in advance of another go round through minor league FA.

Or possibly he sticks with the Brewers, resigns for 2023 and it ends up just being a procedural move to clear a 40 man spot.

It is still commonly referred to as the 'Southern League'. In 2021, it was known as the 'Double-A South' which was, frankly, a silly diversion instituted by MLB for a League originally created in 1885! Then folding in 1899...and then re-appearing as the Southern League in 1964 (where all their historical records have agreed as a launch point). There's a wee bit of history there! Anywho, it's now the Southern League...again...with a North and a South division.

That’s quite the opportunity for the 19-year old, recent 9th round draft pick Hall, though it’s presumably because C Jeferson Quero is unavailable and 1B/C Wes Clarke is probably not fit to catch either as he’s just coming back from a recent injury
