The Rooney rule doesn't apply to interim coaching hires, as those are typically made just to get a team through the rest of a lost season during a league year, without an extensive interview process.

Pretty sure you and Todd Bowles don't see eye to eye on this one.

The Rooney rule was written and adopted to stop racially biased hiring practices.

If this hire doesn't fall within the specific parameters of the Rooney rule (interim vs full time), that doesn't make it any less of a racially biased hire.

Saturday is wholly unqualified for this job, in a league that says it wants to do better by minority coaching candidates.  In making this hire, Irsay opens himself up to fair criticism that he has filled his head coaching job with a lesser white guy, while more qualified minorities didn't get consideration.

Hard to conduct interviews with several people and only from within your own organization when you've got to name an interim same-day. Just as odd to be interviewing and naming your assistant linebackers coach your interim.

Or maybe the Colts just want to best ensure they keep losing and hire a fan-favorite to take the position, especially since the rest of their season doesn't matter.

And the more you say it is racially bias isn't going to make your baseless comment suddenly fact. The Colts used to have a minority coach in Dungy, then Caldwell was his interim at one point, and then was their head coach. The fact people are trying to push some race issue out of this is an amazing reach. However, you can sleep better at night knowing that if Jeff leads the Colts to an undefeated remainder of the season, makes the playoffs, and wins the Super Bowl....the Colts would still have to go out and conduct fake interviews with minorities to fill a quota to comply with the Rooney rule.

I think we should be more upset why a totally unqualified individual just got this gig over pretty much any other coach in the entire organization, regardless of race.

Buffalo is a fun team to watch.

I'd be ok with them winning it all.

Yeah but they just made a foolish decision bypassing the chip shot field goal.

Not sure the Rooney rule applies to interim coaches. I could be wrong though.

I'm also pretty sure that Irsay talked with several other former players, among them a couple of black players. At least that's what McAfee said(and I think he'd know).

Justin Jefferson is single handedly beating the Bills.

edit: guess he was just short of the goal line.... still a monster

Break up the Lions. Two game winning streak and second place in the division after today.

The Lions are GONNA be a problem. I don't know if they've actually passed the Packers right now if the Packers were healthy and...everything didn't fall apart, BUT they are building for the future, they're doing it the right way, and they've got plenty of capital. A 1st this year that will be top ~10...they have the Rams 1st which looks like it'll be top ~15, they've got a nice OL, they have a premiere edge, they've got St. Brown and Williams hasn't even seen the field and...

Detroit is gonna be a problem if they get their hands on Bryce Young or Stroud...I think.

------

Holy #$%!!!! Vikings can't get a TD from the half yard line, the Bills FUMBLE and the Vikings score!

I don't know why but I was kinda rooting for it(I guess just to see weird things happen...but I still feel dirty about it).

Lions could still ruin all their hard work by drafting a stinker of a QB. And they're going to have to trade a good lot of draft picks to move up into that #1 or #2 spot to get either one of them, even if they're comfortable enough with the bigger project QB in Levis. Houston and Carolina need one, and probably the Raiders also go QB if one is available.

I had no idea that Fields set the QB single-game rushing record last week. Apparently he's really starting to turn it around and become kinda decent. Usually as soon as he left the pocket he ducked his head and was going to run, though now he's been keeping his head up and still looking to pass.

They're projected to have the 5th and the 12th pick as of now.

I don't know that Levis is all that much of a project. He's a stud. Reminds me of Andrew Luck(though clearly-clearly not as developed or...he'd be the #1 pick).

Per PFF who has him ahead of Stroud;

Quote

3. QB WILL LEVIS, KENTUCKY

Levis has tools for days. Quick release, howitzer arm, legit rushing ability — Levis has it all. And unlike most quarterbacks billed for their tools at the collegiate level, Levis isn’t far off from being able to operate an NFL offense because he’s been doing it the last two years under current (Liam Coen) and former (Rich Scangarello) NFL offensive coordinators.

Or they could just stay where they are. With this QB class, they may be able to get a guy like Anthony Richardson in the 2nd and see what he can do. There are so many guys in this draft class who have ridiculous athletic ability and arm talent. It's just so hard to predict which ones will develop the recognition and the anticipation needed to play QB.

But lets say they don't get one of the QBs. Will Anderson? Imagine the pass rush they could provide with Will Anderson and Aidan Hutchingson? Or just 5+12 and they move up? They've also got multiple 2nd round picks.

I'd also be a little surprised if the Raiders went QB. I don't think Carr is the problem.

I didn't realize Fields had 178 yards rushing last week either.
Still 3 short of the 181 we gave up to Kaepernick.

the 49ers gave up four draft picks to get Christian McCaffrey and proceeded to give Eli Mitchell 4 more carries than him today.

Eli Mitchell also averaged 4.9 yards a carry to McCaffrey’s 2.7.

And it isn’t like that is skewed by a big run. His long was 12. Mitchell is arguably a better pure RB.

Then why trade for McCaffrey? Just seems like a lot to give up for a guy you are not going to use as a bell cow

I don't think his usage is that far off his career norms. He has never really been a guy to carry it 20+ times a game. With the amount of targets he gets in the passing game and the amount of times he is used as a decoy he isn't exactly destined to carry it a ton in general. Of course, he is made of glass and limiting the number of times he runs up the middle is probably wise. If Elliot is a better runner, why not send him up the middle to get crushed? No different than the Packers drafting Dillon to lessen the blows Jones takes.

They are probably using him how they should...now whether that is worth what they gave up? Well, I guess that is a bit debatable.

If that happened it would be an interesting decision the following year. Do you keep him because he got you to playoffs, or do you replace him because he's totally unqualified to be an NFL coach?

If he leads the team to the playoffs wouldn't that prove he can do the job and is therefore qualified?

No, not necessarily. A LOT of the heavy lifting has already been done at this time of the year. A short term boost to a team isn't quite the same as putting together the whole schedule for 2 a days, the off-season programs, building a staff. The 100 hours a week a coach works.

Josh McDaniels got the Broncos to the playoffs on a flukey run in the regular season. Not sure he was qualified at that point to be a HC(though more qualified than Saturday).

It was also his 3rd week there and he got 6 targets in the passing game(4 completions) and 14 carries. So he ended up with 1 fewer touch than Mitchell who was the hot hand.
The 49ers also had extra picks to play with as they got SIX extra 3rd round picks for losing Saleh to the Jets, McDaniel to the Dolphins and some executive to...somewhere.

Not that they had too many picks. Obviously that's never a problem, but McCaffery is SUCH a threat as both a RB and a WRer and such a great fit in that system...and the NFC is so bad this year, that trade made sense to me.

As for the Packers drafting Dillon to help keep Jones fresh, it's amazing to me how tough Jones has been. He was seen as a little fragile, but he just keeps getting better. Definitely one of the few guys who has lived up to and exceeded expectations.
