Maurice Drayton will not return as #Packers special teams coordinator, a source said. Story to come shortly.

Not surprising in the least, but this will reassure those of you who were upset that it didn't happen immediately.

Now go get someone from outside the organization that has the bonafides to change the painfully longstanding culture of putrid Packer special teams - particularly coverage/blocking and return units. Someone like Andy Hill from the Chiefs - who has experience working under Dave Toub. Another interesting if not wishful thinking option could be Chris Horton from the Ravens. Baltimore may be able to block a strictly lateral ST coordinator move, however they also have Rosburg in charge of special teams/associate head coach there. Harbaugh was a highly respected special teams coordinator himself before becoming a head coach, and their ST units are perennially among the best.

I still wish they did this a week earlier, but if a guy like Tabor wasn't on their radar to bring in I hope they did have a laundry list of preferred options they can choose from.

I gotta say this tidbit from Rob’s ESPN press release on Drayton was, well, gross (?):

“Drayton becomes the eighth straight Packers special teams coordinator to be pushed out. Six were fired and two were forced into retirement“

options up for grabs because of coaching changes.

Among those are Houston’s Frank Ross, who had the 14th-ranked unit, the New York Giants’ Thomas McGaughey (10th), the Las Vegas Raiders’ Rich Bisaccia (11th), who was the team’s interim coach after Jon Gruden was fired, Minnesota’s Ryan Fickman (15th) and Miami’s Danny Crossman (22nd).

My special teams bar is pretty low... Just don't suck.

At this point is be happy 15th or so. .

Mine is lower than that. Catch the ball. Don't allow blocked kicks.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

I wonder if they'll wait around to see who is chosen as the new head coach in New Orleans, and whether Darren Rizzi will be retained as their Special Teams coach? Rizzi should have been the choice a few years ago (Lafleur's first season), but the Packers lowballed him. Bet they won't make that mistake again if given the opportunity.

This aren't going to get a guy like Bisaccia unless they commit to supplying him with quality personnel. Could we FINALLY be seeing a change in philosophy when it comes to how they approach special teams? Perhaps it will no longer be looked at as the Black Sheep of the organization.

Seems obvious that Crosby won’t be back. I’m sure MLF would have to promise him some say in his units. It’s such a mess it would be best for MLF to stay out of it. At work, at areas where I’m weak I try to delegate. This should apply

Beyond our long snapper issues, I tend to think most of the issues were more coaching and coordination of teams. It isn't like the guys we had out there were terrible athletes. They just weren't working together to block or tackle.... more like a bunch of guys out there running around together.

To a point. Most teams with solid special teams have a few veteran guys whose focus is for the most part on that part of the game. The Packers, at least the last several seasons, have not employed players like that. Instead they have populated their special teams units with young, relatively inexperienced players. Sure, fine athletes. But they are developmental guys. You need a few rocks to hold each special teams unit in place. The Packers of several years ago employed players like Jarrett Bush and Jeff Janis specifically for special teams duty. Sure, those guys would sometimes get pressed into duty on offense or defense, but they were making the team every year, and getting paid because they were great special teamers. They need to get back to that.

Bears were trying to get Bisaccia but they just announced that they hired some other guy. Bodes well for GB. Bisaccia had connections with Eberflus.

Neither Bush nor Janis would've helped our top 3 issues.

1) Can't block for 3 seconds so the kicker/punter can kick the ball.

- I was amazed to see how often people just knifed through or where one person had to block two people. Just seemed like people were not on the same page here.

2) Fumbles when catching the ball

- Finding a legit specialist would help here.

3) Missed FGs

- I attribute this mostly to changing up the punter (holder) and LS (mid-season no less). But it got better.

4) Coverage holes

- They had one return for a TD and gave up some longer returns. They seemed to resolve this toward the end of the season, however. Looked like we often would have some guys downfield on kickoffs way ahead of others, creating big holes in the line.

Solutions:

1) New long-snapper. He had numerous poor snaps and blocking issues.

2) Find a legit return specialist. We stuck with Rodgers far too long.

3) A special teams coach that actually will train the players how to block and cover.

4) Replace Crosby? I'm not sure how many of the FG misses I place on Crosby, but it is clear that his leg is starting to age. We obviously kept a PK on the practice squad for a reason.

Bisaccia hasn't had a kick or punt blocked from his ST units in 5 seasons

i'm glad they seem to be taking this serious finally, but I still can't help to think what could have been if they did this last offseason and got a real ST coordinator.

This is a fantastic hire - frankly I'm shocked he isn't still the head coach of the Raiders.

His players seem to absolutely love him. He will be a selling point for bringing in free agents.

Ouch, he was GREAT with the Bucs too, can't believe they didn't bring him in for an interview...

...I'm pretty sure the point of the post wasn't to sign Jarrett Bush or Jeff Janis. It was that they deemed ST players useful in and of themselves. They don't do that anymore. As evidenced by leaving Moore off the playoff roster when he was the clear top choice to field kicks.

On one of the SF blocks, the Packers lined up 4 people to block 6 rushers. There was a timeout or something, and then a regroup, and they came out with the exact same 4v6 blocking scheme. That alone is grounds for firing.

or why the Jags hired Pederson over him.
