Anyone else get the feeling after last night's MVP award that Rodgers wanting a trade out of town is a distant 3rd in the potential outcomes for next season? I think a return to the Packers and retirement might be running neck and neck, with a trade out of town to play for a new team being an afterthought.

We're probably only a couple weeks away from knowing for certain - but I think if he truly wanted to walk and continue playing elsewhere we'd have heard something by now from Rodgers' camp.

Agreed. He's either gonna retire or play for Green Bay.

I'm in the same boat, although I think that if the Packers chose to trade him, they'd bring him in on the decision and he'd be part of the process of picking his next destination. But I get the feeling from listening to him last night that in his heart, he wants to be the Packers' QB next year, but his mind is telling him that his age and salary demands means that the magic he has had the last two regular seasons has a limited shelf life.

Would be a pretty depressing way to go out with his final game being that embarrassment. I still have a hard time accepting they actually lost that game and how they did. Just a totally uneventful 3hr dud. That was probably the most surprising loss I've seen as a Packers fan in the playoffs. SB32 is right there, but even the 2011 loss, some folks had a feeling they were in a bit of trouble. I thought this year's team was really, really good, which just makes it that much worse.

I've long felt that Rodgers wasn't going to stick around beyond the point in his career where he was obviously diminished as a player - even before all the drama starting around this time last year. While the dud Packer loss and overall poor Rodgers performance in that game does indeed sting, looking at the big picture of his career it would be tough to outdo going out after winning back to back league MVPs if Rodgers really did want to retire as close to the top of the mountain as possible.

Man, it's going to be a real letdown if Rodgers retires. Not only will we be in for some rebuilding years, we won't get squat for compensation for him leaving.

I read his comments and it makes me wonder but hard for me to believe he will retire, I have said it before he likes the attention too much. If he is burned out on the playoff exits like the rest of us he may just want some new scenery, I agree that doesn't seem like where this is headed right now but I will still be shocked if he retires. Denver is waiting for him so I am sure that is in his mind as he decides, I wouldn't write it off until we know.

Very happy for Butler, those 90's teams haven't got much HOF love for various reasons but he deserves it.

Now that the Rams have proven it’s possible to buy a championship in the NFL, the ‘sign everyone’ Packer fans will become more emboldened.

Emboldened, yes, but no wiser. By all accounts they wanted Beckham in Green Bay, but he wanted LA. That’s free agency for you; you can’t press-gang people onto your roster.

The Rams’ win is deflating to me as a Packer fan. All these years while they were signing free agents and trading away draft picks, I thought ‘they can’t possibly sustain this.’ And yet they did for 5 years. It doesn’t matter if they go dormant now. They succeeded in embedding themselves in LA.

Should be the start of a very interesting off season for Green Bay this week. Wouldn’t be surprised if they start cap maneuvering almost immediately.

LA is a weird town for football. I'm sure there are people that love the victory, but I don't know if that embeds the Rams in LA. How many teams have come and gone there? Seems like when things go south, people just do something else.

I wonder if the Rodgers extension will happen quickly? Frankly, I really hope they don't have to make Rodgers the highest paid (by year) QB in the league. I'm hoping it is posturing so when he takes a low figure, people will see it as Rodgers being gracious instead of the Packers being cheap...

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Agreed. At some point it really would be great if Rodgers would make the acknowledgment money-wise that his best way to help the team be competitive is that like Brady (and Favre in a lot of ways), the best thing he really can do to help is play under a salary that is 'beneath' his performance level, especially for 2022. His supposed demand to be highest-paid doesn't equate well to 'room to add talent'. He needs to get on board with that philosophy at some point.

This should be the gameplan provided Rodgers wants back and it would wind up with him actually making more actual money this year than what his current contract would pay him. Inking a 4 or even 5 year contract extension that pays him a massive (and guaranteed) signing bonus would allow the Packers to spread the bonus amount out across 4 or 5 cap years and then also structure the contract so his 1st season "salary" amount for cap purposes is small is very doable. it kicks the cap management can down the road where it can hopefully be dealt with in future seasons where the cap jumps up a bit more post-COVID, too.

I'd expect the same type of contract with Adams - and frankly for Jaire Alexander as well to get him an extension. There's a good chance some of the cap gymnastics wind up with Green Bay actually paying out much larger chunks of guaranteed money to players who wind up with significantly reduced 2022 cap figures than their current contracts or potential franchise tag amounts are.

Is there any kind of "Not until June" date which needs to pass before Rodgers would be traded? If so and he's traded with picks involved, I guess that would mean Green Bay would have to just tell whatever team who to draft in April before they get traded over?

Of course if he's extended that could be done any time, but if he's going to be traded are there any dates we should have in mind?

Posted

There's a financial benefit to waiting until after June 1, but beyond that there's zero reason why they wouldn't want 2022 draft picks. Unless you're wanting 22 to be a 'tank' year, which I suppose is possible though unlikely.

Beyond that dates are fluid prior to the start of the league year. Rodgers has said he'll make his choice known prior to the end of the March 8th tag deadline, so there's that. But, I'd expect all parties involved (Packers, acquiring team, Rodgers) would want that known as far in advance as possible.

I read a commenter on another site point out something I didn’t consider until now: if Rodgers retires this year, he has to share his Hall of Fame enshrinement with Brady. That alone is probably enough to get him to play at least one more year.

The only question is going to be where he plays, but not if. I thought after the 49er game he was gone, then everybody on team franchise and team Rodgers hopped on the good vibes train, but I’m still not shocked if he goes elsewhere. It all could be a well-orchestrated effort to keep Rodgers’ trade value as high as humanly possible.

If you put a gun to my head, I’d predict he stays, but I still think there’s a 20-30% chance he’s dealt.

I'm personally not at all convinced Brady isn't showing up to somebody's camp in August.

I agree, and if that is the case, I'd say it's a 50/50 chance it's SF.
