Would the Brewers have a couple more wins this season if Alexander would have stayed on as a starter in place of Ashby? Factoring in being able to use Ashby out of the bullpen in that scenario, seems likely.

Alexander has some value as a AAAA guy that bounces back and forth, but he's not very good.

Lauer is basically Claudio Vargas 2.0

Last year, Lauer was a quality #2 starter (though #4 on the Brewers).

This year Lauer is a quality #3 starter.

Some of you guys are spoiled.

Does anyone know the contract situation w/ Strezlecki? Not anointing him as a big difference maker or anything but he shows signs of being a more than serviceable middle inning guy.

He is a rookie so will be making around league minimum for the next three years if the Brewers want him plus a couple of more years to option him to the minors

Win or lose there’s a 100 % chance I’m not finding out until the morning.  Hopefully I wake up to good news

Me too.  And we did!

So how many consecutive days can these unconditioned guys go? I'll bet it's not many. I hope they're not making a lot of money.

That usually depends on pitch count, if they've gotten up in the interim & not used, was one of those days facing only one batter to close out an inning, how hard a guy throws, etc. Devin Williams threw on Saturday & Counsell didn't want to use him for the next TWO days because he threw almost 40 pitches.

What makes it more of a factor for Milwaukee is we're getting a lot of starts where the guy goes 5 innings more or less. That extra inning or 2 that a BP has to pick up wears on you over time.

The juju magic has to wear off at some point, doesn't it?

Bueller?

Looking at their schedule, maybe not.

I don’t expect them to keep winning at the pace they have been in August, but they have done two big things the Brewers haven’t.

One, they are beating up on the bad teams, and they have a lot more of them coming up in the next few weeks. Except for one three game home series against the Braves this weekend and two at home against the Brewers in mid September, it’s nothing but Cubs, Reds, Nats, and Pirates until the last two weeks of the season. If the Brewers want to gain ground they’re going to have to do something big themselves, like winning 9 of 10 or 13 of 15 or something like that. Just winning series isn’t likely to be good enough.

Second, the Cards improved themselves at the deadline by adding two veteran starters who have solidified their rotation and their bullpen by allowing the former spot starters to be used in relief, often for more than an inning at a time.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.
