I just looked him up on baseball reference and was shocked to see that this is Bellinger's age 27 season! He's a full 3 1/2 years younger than Yelich. I forgot there was that much of an age difference between the two of them.

I see this as a bit of a barometer for how much we're overpaying Yelich relative to what he would command on the open market, at least for a 1-year contract.

Belli might have youth on his side, but he has been legit bad (74 OPS+ and 1.2 WAR over 1143 PA) post-2019.

Seems like a lot of money for a cross your fingers and hope.

It really is stunning how bad Bellinger has been the two years.  He was stunning good from 2017-2019 though.  I guess I see why the $17.5M but that is very likely to be an overpay for 1 year.

When Andrew Friedman lets a player walk away rather than pay $18m when that player has been developed in-house, is a former MVP, is 27 years old, and plays a position of need for the team--it's probably best to steer clear of that player.

Especially at $17.5m. Either Jed Hoyer is smarter than Friedman or more desperate. I'm going with the latter.
