What to do about 3rd Base ?

I like the idea of Canha, but he's played less than 50 games at 1B since his rookie year (2015) and he appears to be strictly LF.  If he could play RF competently I'd be on board (and I'm not positive he can't for the record).

I think this is a good idea as well.  Extend him while he still is affordable, and give him a permanent position on the infield.

Looking like Urias permanent position is gonna be 3B, since we dont seem to be interested in signing anymore bats... I'm totally good with getting a 3B and moving Urias to 2B.

I would not extend Urias, he has not proven enough to warrant that. He hit worse this year and doesn't pass the eye test as much more than an average defender. If he was an ascending player or had 1 highly bankable skill I could get on board. Woody, Adames, Rowdy, Williams, Lauer, and Contreras all deserve extensions more/before Urias. I am fine with Urias at 3rd this year but he is not the extend early type at this point.

Wouldn’t extend Urias either.

He’s a perfectly cromulent 2B/3B option through Arby, but no need to lock him up beyond that barring some kind of breakout.

I prefer keeping younger players like Urias incentivized to succeed as much as possible.  You never know how the security of a long term deal will affect a player's incentive to work on his game.  The White Sox gave long term deals a few years ago to Moncada, Robert and Jimenez before any had come close to reaching their projected ceilings.  None of those guys has reached the level projected for them.  Granted injuries have played a big role, but that doesn't totally explain Moncada's OPS+ of 76 in 2022.

A 112 wRC+ to a 110 wRC+ isn't a big drop off from 2021. He posted a 4.4 fWAR/6.2 bWAR over the last 2 seasons, and he's entering his age 26 season.

I'm okay with riding with Urias for another year.

Remember, last year he missed the first month of the season. That he took some time getting back in the swing of things isn't a shocker. In the 2nd half of 2022, he had a .790 OPS. 

And in the first couple of months of 2021 he went through the whole messy situation at SS - and he struggled both offensively and defensively. In the first two months of that year, he didn't hit well (OPS around .700). But from June on, his OPS was well over .800. 

Regarding his defense, Urias appears fine at 3B. It's at SS that he seems to really struggle. 

So I have no problem going with him in 2023. Let's hope he stays healthy and puts together a full season of quality ball. If he can play solid defense, hit .250-.260, pop 20 HR - that's pretty good. That would make him a 3.0+ WAR player. I'll take that.

Urias is only 25 - so I there's still time for him to put it all together. I'd give him that chance rather than just sign another fading veteran.

I his ba/obp went down 10 pts and slugging was down 41 pts. That would be a worse year for a young guy should be getting better.

wRC+ uses stats from around the league. Urias was worse last year than 2021 no doubting it. He still had a fine year but not an extension worth year.

Against the run environment is the important bit. Back to back 10+% better than league average bat and 2-3 WAR player should make you feel good about an extension especially if you think he takes another step forward as he enters his prime.

A Urias extension could be a smart move looking back 5 years from now.  Or it could look really stupid.  I want to see more from him before talking about an extension.

I think if anyone was traded from the brewers rotation they'd be looking a potential SP to develop back

So a Lauer may command someone like Owen White from the rangers for instance

Moustakas has now been released, with the reds eating his 22M salary.  All it would cost the brewers is league minimum to sign him this year.  He and brousseu would make a decent platoon at 3b with urias shifting to 2b.

I'm not sure that would be any more productive than keeping Urias at 3B, with Brosseau sprinkling in, and just playing Turang at 2B. I know Moose was quite productive in his time as a Brewer, but he was pretty bad the last two seasons with the Reds, and only so-so in 2020.

I'm really coming around on Toro being our everyday 2B, he's a good hitter with some pop.

Tellez - 1B

Urias - 3B

Toro - 2B

Taylor - RF

Mitchell - CF

Think lineup gives us great balance and I actually think this can be a damn good lineup.

824 MLB plate appearances would suggest you're wrong about being a good hitter with some pop. I don't put too much stock into minor league numbers with a player who is 26 and has about two seasons worth of bad MLB stats to his name. 

He is a switch hitter and plays both 2B and 3B; thus if he puts up a .700 OPS as a utility guy,  I'm sure the Brewers would be pleased.

The question with Toro is, will the elimination of the shift help him as much as some think? If so, he could be a passable regular. If not, well …
