Feels like there is something more to drop here unless Miley is switching to a relief role which seems somewhat unlikely. Either Ashby/Houser are going to the pen or a trade of some sort is coming

I agree, feels like either Houser or Lauer will be traded elsewhere. My gut feels like Lauer will be the one being traded

There's your first major league free agent signing...Now, this is the kind of starting pitching depth I'm talking about. While 36 years of age, Miley is still a heck of a lot better than Alexander and Chi Chi, and is more proven than Gasser, Junk, and Wilson (who may be headed to the bullpen). One of the major reasons why we failed to make the postseason last season was because our starting pitching production dovetailed due to injuries and a lack of effective replacements. This helps guard against a repeat....

Miley likely slides into the back-end of the opening day rotation, but I wouldn't worry too much about innings for Ashby and Houser given how frequently Miley is injured. Essentially, Miley will be 2021 Brett Anderson...

Sure why not

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

You can never have too much starting pitching. Why would they trade someone? This might mean they want Ashby to serve as their go-to lefty out of the pen though, maybe in a vintage Hader multi-inning fireman role.

Miley has been very good the last couple years when healthy, and he gives the rotation some variety with a very different pitching style to the top 3. A nice signing!

Yeah but to have real depth players need to have options…….sure you can slide Houser and let’s say Ashby into the bullpen but then they aren’t stretched out,,,,,,,,it seems more likely that so.embody is getting moved to me.

I don’t see a scenario where the starters are the big 3 plus Lauer and Miley…..with Houser and Ashby in the pen.

Maybe I’m wrong……time will tell.

I got one right!

(Mancini is still available, Lauer can now be traded for something besides a starting catcher)

Ok.  Here's my (plan) wish list for the rest of the winter.  Know it won't happen, but I can dream as this represents the Crew "going for it".

  • Trade Lauer and Mitchell for Danny Jansen.  Not because he's from Wisconsin but due to the fact that he'll keep Rowdy happy.
  • Sign Mancini to be your right handed bat to play 1st against LHP and right field at other times as well.  Maybe his clubhouse vibes will rub off on Winker.   (Wil Myers if Mancini wants too much)
  • Sign Robertson to be the 8th inning guy.  I thought about a lefty, but think Robertson has decent numbers against left-handed bats over his career.  Like having a guy with closer experience.
  • Sign Wade Miley (or similar pitcher) as Starting pitching depth.  Expect Ashby and/or Junk to make plenty of starts throughout the year.
  • Considered leaving Turang at AAA to start the year and giving Toro a chance to win the 3rd base job, but really like Turang range at 2nd with no more shifts.

I like it whether it's a precursor to a trade (my first thought), or just depth.

Just get Jason Alexander the hell off my TV.

Miley is injured almost as frequently as Brett Anderson...Plus they could very easily want to go back to the 6 man rotation that was so successful in 2021. I see no reason why they couldn't keep at least 6 starters stretched out throughout the course of the season.

I actually would prefer that they cash in on Lauer now and trade him to a team desperate for low-cost SP, but I never like to assume that one transaction will automatically lead to another.

I like this signing. Put Houser in the pen until someone gets injured.

Also, I remember the days when the Crew had almost no lefties in the rotation.

Probably just starter depth.  I wouldn't be shocked to see Houser as a long relief guy.

I think there is a zero chance that Ashby isn't starting this year from day one.

Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Ashby and Miley, with Houser to the bullpen.

Another interesting idea could be Ashby and Houser piggybacking starts.

I mean, at the very least, it is just starter depth, as we all know we won't make it through the full season with 6 starters.  Miley is a good guy to have at the end of the rotation.

1 year 4.5 million, up to 6 million in incentives

Just in case anyone was confused, there is up to 1.5 million in incentives, not 6 million.

We didnt sign Ashby to that extension to put him in the pen... Our rotation has to be Burnes/Woody/Peralta/Ashby/Miley?

Houser to pen, Lauer traded Im guessing.

Or a 6 man rotation, as we did for stretches in 2021...

I'd be very surprised if we don't have a 6 man rotation.
