Quite a deal for the Rangers, in my opinion

Last two years Smith is at 89 ERA- | 104 FIP- | 99 xFIP- over 127 IP.

Will’s 1.42 HR9 ranks 85th of 94 relievers with at least 100 IP over that span, and his K9 fell off from 11.5 in 2021 to 9.9 in 2022.

Hope there is a bounce back in there for the Fresh Prince, but lotsa HR and declining Ks are bad indicators.

Needs to get that 2018-19 slider back, +25.6 runs (1st) vs only +7.6 runs from 2021-22 (18th).

I don’t understand why the Brewers wouldn’t take a chance on a veteran like Will Smith. He goes to the Rangers for $1.5M.

I wouldn't look at 1.5M as the true number of the deal.

A) Smith gets bonus money (up to another 2.5M) for games and games finished.   I doubt he has much chance at a games finished bonus in MKE with a healthy Devin Williams around.

B) Let's assume the bonus money is achieved, that is a 4.0M deal in a state with limited/ no state income tax.

MKE would be paying @5.0M to match the deal.

Probably because they like the arms they currently have better.

And it's not that hard to see why when you compare the way guys like Abner Uribe and Gus Varland are pitching to Will Smith's declining peripherals and metrics.

Though, I personally wouldn't have been opposed to taking a chance on him at that price.

It really looks like they are going with what they have in camp. Looks like they will not be spending any more

I would think that the FO is keeping an eye on a group of players that might not make others teams coming out of camp that are out of options or opting out of minor league deals...

I am unsure how much money the FO still has for its budget this season but the longer they don't use the amount (say its 5M), the more of a contract can be acquired at the trade deadline.  5M available now would pay for a 10M player brought in at the trade deadline...

Zack Britton would be the only guy left that would make sense (not sure on injury status), I am sure there will be some decent players when cuts are made. My guess is we add a vet who gets cut else where, at least someone to go to AAA.

I don't have much faith in Milner, I feel like when teams start seeing him a bunch he becomes easier to hit. I feel like division teams will have success with him seeing him a lot last year. Hopefully Small is ready to go quickly

I don't understand why we traded for Rosenthal, yet we did nothing to sign him as a free agent. (yes, I know he is right handed)

Geez, had we been able to sign the guy for a year, at least I wouldn't feel so violated...

The team is adding Houser as a bullpen option.  There's Ashby or Lauer as LH arms that can't all fit in a 5man rotation when healthy.  Small is LH.  Justin Wilson, Milner LH.   That's 5 arms to work with from the LH side currently on the 40man.
