Yikes...  Happy for Ashby to have signed his future-securing contract, but shoulder issues can have long-term implications that may be a pain-point for the organization going forward. Hopefully, this was all done with all parties on-board, and about helping Ashby realize his potential.

If this is our only significant pitching injury, we’ll be fine. But that’s far from a guarantee…

From a 2023 performance standpoint, this likely doesn't move the needle much on the Brewers season.

The real damage comes from the Brewers kinda needing Ashby to take a step forward in 2023 because it's likely that Burnes is gone after this season and Woodruff is likely gone the season after that. The team needs pitching performances from some of the young guys.

I recently had a SLAP repair on my right shoulder.  2 months in and I’m just now able to raise my arm above my head.  I’m not sure what surgery he’s having but surgery to the shoulders suck.

Puts even more emphasis on LHP Ethan Small's development down in Nashville. Obviously, these are very different pitchers. But, we could really use Small to solidify as another Lefty arm in the Pen who has experience as a Starter. He looked fantastic in his first outing - the best he's looked since 2021, honestly. I'm crossing my fingers he's turned a corner after a pretty tough 2022.

These are the kind of examples I point to when people say, "Why did he take such a low discounted number when he could have gone year to year and maybe made 200M instead of 20M?

I can always understand a guy taking life changing money when it's on the table. Which would you rather have, a guaranteed 20M or a chance at 200M? No right answer, but I can understand both.

Yep, both routes have their benefits and drawbacks. I can't fault a player for choosing either path.

From an opportunity cost standpoint, at least it's not a significant salary that could have been used elsewhere. (Contract details: "$1 million [in 2023], $1.25 million in 2024 and then $3.25 million in 2025, $5.5 million in 2026 and $7.5 million in 2027...")

Missing out on his potential contributions this year is still a pretty decent loss, and losing the development time is certainly not ideal.

Bad loss as expecting him to take the next step and losing a year hurts.Small needs to continue to pitch well out of the Pen.We going to need another lefty out of the Pen.
