O'Rae!!!

I feel this is where the real challenge begins for him. The low minors can have choppy defense and you can get away with a lot of stuff.

Now I think we will see if his on-basa ability is the real deal and if he can stay productive despite having no power

THAT makes sense. I thought it strange they'd add both O'Rae & Valerio to Biloxi.

I absolutely love the type of game O'Rae brings to the table, but this'll be a very stern test for him. Never dreamt for a moment he'd be seeing AA this soon.

And he was a major head scratcher at the ‘22 draft right? Our 3rd rounder out of HS (who MLB TV had no info on - no scouting report iirc) is now teammates of our 1st rounder who was a college bat. Now EBJ has been set back with injuries, but O’Rae has been a great story.  Kudos to the scouts. A. If step yet for to succeed in AA and even bigger to make the pros. But now which ‘22 pick seems first to hit the majors??

(Woessner may be first; Miz looked like a lock but a real set back year development wise; EBJ or ORae; long shots with talent include Adams, Wood; or Robert Moore who went to the Phillies)

Gotta forgive MLB Network for not having anything on O'Rae. He was from Canada & not projected to go to anyone in the northeast😉.

Given the potential need in the rotation I think Woessner is a pretty good guess. O'Rae or even Brown could fill a brief utility role due to someones' IL stint but that would more likely be answered by someone of the 'AAAA' ilk already on the 40-man at that time. So I'd guess Woessner.

I like Adams quite a bit. Maybe if he was a year further along...........

Hopefully O'Rae connects with Turang about what Turang did in the offseason to add ~25 lbs.  Can definitely tell that Turang has a lot more muscle in his lower half than last year.

I wonder if RHP Alexander Vallecillo has gone the route of a few other Brewers' minor leaguers who essentially fade from the system with no formal transaction note (e.g. released, retired). He last pitched September 5, 2023 and isn't showing on any injured list to my knowledge.

In recent years, RHP Justin Bullock, RHP Ray Black, RHP Jose Chavez and OF Jose Gonzalez (DSL-level) similarly disappeared from rosters without a note, although the club later back-dated a transaction release post for Chavez (September 25, 2023).

Accounting for recent activity (and excluding Vallecillo), I note the organization as having 148 stateside players on minor league contracts who are not on 60-day or full season injured lists. I think that's a relatively healthy margin below the 165-MILB player cap, to be largely filled from the July draft and a few non-drafted player signings.

Wow. I thought the team was near the cap. Is it near that cap if we include the 60-day/full-season IL?

Just curious as if they had a lot room, wondering why more FA or Indy signings didn't happen last month when a lot of injuries really tapped the depth of like Nashville/Biloxi.

My understanding is that the 60/full season injured players don’t count. I’ve got us at 173 players rostered, minus 13 long-term injured and 12 optioned players, so that’s 148 (well, 149 with Flores now promoted stateside - i.e. 16 open slots).

Last year we signed 18 draft picks and 6 non-drafted players (Whiting, Hunt, etc.), so I’m sure the team is readying itself for those additions late next month and doesn’t want to have to make deep cuts at that time.

I was literally just thinking about him the other day when I was randomly perusing the 2022 and 2023 Mudcats rosters. MiLB still has him with an 'Active' designation. Yet, he is clearly not rostered. As you allude to, it certainly appears to be a case of one of those random 'fade into the backdrop' informal exits. Very strange.
