Maybe it was just speculation, but wasn't the talk that Hoskins was looking to do the opposite of a more years for lower AAV deal? Basically that he was looking for a higher AAV 1+1 in order to bet on himself and increase the AAV on a long-term deal after the season.

That's fine too. Right in the Brewers wheel house then. They love their one year deals.

Back to Nola .... IMO this is a solid reclamation-type project. He's been a solid offensive contributor in the past, and while it is doubtful that he's suddenly going to find his prime-years bat at 34, he's a solid veteran capable of playing multiple positions, and someone they can stash in Nashville until he either gets hot enough to warrant a call-up, or hits his opt-out date (whatever that may be).

Right.   He and Haase provide the depth needed so if an injury happens the prospect doesn't need to be called up.  First, because if he's backup he wont' be playing much. And second, to not start his clock.  It wouldn't surprise with 4 years left of Contreras that they'd want to push the prospect all the way to next year for one less year of overlap on their control.  Sucks for him but that's the business.

Assuming the long term plan is for Quero to take over the mantle, I think these are the perfect short term stopgap backstops.

It certainly makes sense, coming off of an injury, that he would like to do that. Have the player options, or the mutual options, become more common the last few years, or did I just miss hearing about it in the past? That seems like what a player would want on a "prove it" deal.

I understand the frustration around the lack of an "impactful" offseason thus far, but the reality is that the top dominos haven't fallen for the positions we are interested in.  Until Rhys Hoskins and Matt Chapman (and possibly to some degree Cody Bellinger) sign, the rest of the pool doesn't yet quite know their worth.  I think this stall is probably more on the players side than the teams, as it behooves the player to wait so they can seek the most compensation.

It also keeps the possibility that some of these top players are still in the running for the Brewers... maybe we haven't signed Carlos Santana because we have an offer to Hoskins, etc.

Long story short, frustrating, yes... but there are still plenty of names out there... if they haven't signed yet, it could be the Brewers are biding their time to get a loaded one year deal or a contract they're comfortable with.

Right, and like I have said previously, we may get bitten in the butt if we wait too long and he is gone.

The only real reason I want in on Santana again is because he is a far better option than Bauers, and it isn't even close.  I know we can fool ourselves into thinking we have a reasonable shot at Hoskins, but I 100% think someone else will pay him, and we'll be left with nothing if we wait too long.

Moving forward, can we please put all minor league deals even if they include a ML camp invite in the minor league section so we can avoid this kind of reaction to a minor league signing?
