Definitely feels like Frelick at 3B is imminent.

I think,it depends if they feel he can handle it defensively……..they wouldn’t let Black play there because of his glove so we will see.

That would alleviate the logjam in the outfield, but at what cost defensively at 3B?

I hope this is not the direction we take, now, or ever...  His bat does not play at 3B.

Vinny Capra has appeared in 17 major league games for the Blue Jays and Pirates and has posted a .514 OPS.

This season in 297 plate appearances with Nashville he has a .246/.333/.350/.683 slash line with 4 homers and 25 RBIs.

Does he get DFA'd and Junk optioned once Civale is here?

His bat plays better than Andruw Monasterio right now, which is all that matters.

Glad they put Joey on the IL. When a guy has to totally change his batting stance because his neck is bothering him then he probably shouldn't be playing in baseball games.

🤢🤮

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

A DFA would not be needed once Civale makes it to the 26 man as Clarke was already DFA today.

Ah I missed that. Thanks!

Unrelated to the thread but in hindsight that Clarke trade was a disaster. Devanney has a .760 OPS with Omaha (would have been a waaaaay better option instead of Capra) and I really liked Brady's profile (he's been mediocre so far this year).

Funny, I was thinking the opposite.  Devanney season is a disappointment after an 824 OPS last year.  Brady has a 1.6 WHIP this year in relief at AA as a 25 year old.  We will see what happens but right now it does not seem like we gave up much to take a shot at Clarke.

If he's adequate defensively I have no problem with Frelick taking a few turns at 3B in the next 10 days. For a limited time I don't think his offensive profile not fitting at 3B is a big deal.

Just make the routine plays & offensively, be yourself. For all we know Monasterio may get the bulk there anyway.

I never felt he was going to sustain that 800+ OPS production and he is still productive, especially in an International League with diminished offensive production  (.794 OPS in 2023 vs .773 in 2024) and improved pitching (5.17 ERA 1.536 WHIP in 2023 vs  4.93 and 1.475). Never a world beater but better than Capra.

Yeah Brady has not been stellar this year but to be fair those numbers were inflated by a 1 IP 5 ER blowout on June 30. Prior to that he had a 3.00 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. Again, not stellar, but decent, and I like the fastball slider curve combo

Frelick’s bat plays at 3B but with some caveats

  • short term, yes, because the bar is low on this team at the moment, and only if his defense isn’t so bad that it’s a deal breaker
  • long term, maybe, but you have to project him as a hitter more like his MiLB numbers (high avg/obp and doubles) and some combination of good defense and/or a bit of growth in power

i would not be shocked if he was able to grow into above average defense there and adequate hitting if the organization chose to go that route, over the course of a few years

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

I saw that Joey is going to do a rehab stint. If he plays say 2 games in the minors it leaves 2 games or do we just think he is going to rehab in AAA through the allstar break.

It sounds like the plan is for him to play one game tonight in Appleton and then return for the Nats series.

Not lost on me that many of the recent offensive inconsistencies occurred once Ortiz went down - will be great getting him back in the lineup soon!
