I don't know how to feel about Birchard's season at present given how much of a literal struggle it has been

Did we know about his injury - was it oblique or muscle strain? I couldn't easily find it, but I thought it was something like that.

I imagine that will mess up delivery, consistency etc.

Going into the season he had a tiny bit of helium - his mound presence and his raw stuff were enticing from reports, and then his season just never got started, He had one 4 inning start and then on the IL with a rehab stint and multiple short appearances. So he could use the innings this fall to see if the hype was real.

Yeah, hard to say. It was one of those classic mildly aggressive promotions of a draft pick the Brewers obviously covet but there was very little in terms of in-season performance to back it up.  I personally saw very similar 'issues' (I say this extremely lightly - none of us know what is going on in terms of what these young men are working on or playing with/through) to things we'd seen from both RHP Will Childers (in 2023 when he first appeared) and in bullpen RHP Mitch White. Flat. Flat. Flat. Came off the hand flat. Entered the zone flat. Back to Birchard: I would opine he really needs to avoid the walk issues but I think the walk issues are related to how hittable his stuff was when in the zone. Very much a work in progress. Let's hope he experiences improvements in Arizona.

No Woodward is disappointing. Other than that, solid group. When does the AFL start? Mid-November?

Unfortunately, we don't have an injury update there. Woodward's unavailability for the playoffs was quite a bit more disappointing, obviously. He was really starting to find his groove and it was absolutely electric. BUT, we've seen enough in his short bit of work in Carolina to know: the Brewers absolutely have something there. No doubt about it.

Very surprised re: Wilken.

I am not surprised by Wilken.  I still believe the Brewers want him to get more PA's to finish out the year.  I am more surprised by Baez.  I am a bit disappointed Baez got the call and not Pratt but that is more along the lines I would rather see Pratt play in person as I am only like 15 minutes away from the Peoria sports complex.

I'm surprised about Wilken in that I personally feel an off-season to reset - get further away from his broken face; a disappointing season overall; and find out what it's like to be a father - is more important than more AB's in 2024. BUT, obviously, from a strictly baseball perspective a chance to have a better run at the dish might be worth it as is more games and experiences as a general rule. And, more games and more exposure give the Brewers more information on what he might need to work on in the later part of this year and into spring. I get all that and, at this point, I just hope he crushes it.

Baez, also missed quite a bit of time with his shoulder injury this past season so the PT is a need. He's a very fun player. An underrated player at 3B defensively as I've said for awhile. Sure, he had some misplays late in the season but, as a whole, his defense has been better than advertised since the ACL. I continue to believe he can get even better there. He needs the AB's and higher-end exposure - we need to find if he can find more line drive power, for example. I think the AFL is a good fit to see where he is truly at in his career. And, it's a good challenge. He makes too many outs on the base paths - almost as if he thinks his extremely impactful aggressive bat-to-ball skills will just work running the bases. It very much doesn't. Can he rein this back? IF he were a more disciplined base runner, we'd likely be talking more seriously about Baez. Given his primary is the hot corner he has to tap into more power. Given his age and lower prospect ranking, I imagine he will probably be a PT player in Arizona. I hope I'm wrong. I want him to see FT exposure.

Absolutely. Loved the profile since last year's draft and I really wanted to see more of him. Oh well. There's always next season

Here's the Peoria roster where you'll notice old friend LHP Justin King (picked up by the Marlins after his mid-season release) will join his former Brewers buddies.

First Peoria game is today, Tuesday the 8th, 3:30 Central Time on the road at Camelback Ranch in Glendale. (Javelinas Schedule)

This first game can be streamed and will be archived as well.

Peoria is also streaming on Wednesday and the streaming schedule can be viewed at the link in the prior sentence.

Nice to have live feeds of all these AFL games. AND, man, I could do without a home plate camera view into perpetuity. I'm still scarred from the early Shuckers season.

Peoria’s game is under way at Surprise:

- RF Luis Lara - 2 hard hit infield ground outs (103.2mph, 105.1mph)
- 2B Juan Baez - one pitch, one single to center field

They’re up 3-0 in the 3rd inning.

Lara collected 2 singles, an RBI and a stolen base his next 2 times up. The RBI extended the lead to 5-3 in the 7th inning. 2-for-4 thus far.

Baez flied out twice (one a first pitch swing with runners on the corners and 1 out) and K’d over his next 3 ABs. 1-for-4 thus far.

LHP Mark Manfredi has entered for the bottom of the 9th.

Manfredi picks up his first Save of his AFL season pitching a scoreless, hitless, 1 BB, 1 K 9th inning. The Javelinas move to 1-1.

Also had a HBP in there

The Javelinas will be back at it in the late slot tonight as they face Glendale for the second time in three days. After 28 runs scored between the two squads in Game 1, what fireworks are in store tonight?

It appears all three of Wilken (3B), Lara (CF) and Baez (2B) will be in the line-up.

Game time is scheduled for 8pm CST

And yes, tonight is a stream night.

The Javelinas are now 0-2 versus the Glendale Desert Dogs. They've been outscored 28-19 after losing 13-6 tonight. RHP Cameron Crow has officially pitched his first innings as a Brewers hurler - 1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 ER. 3B Brock Wilken followed up his 'Brocket' with a vintage 2024 Wilken performance - 0-for-5 with 3 K <sad face>. CF Luis Lara also went a hitless in an 0-for-4, 1 K, and 1 GIDP evening. 2B Juan Baez filled it up <yay!> going 3-for-4 with 1 R, 1 RBI, and 1 2B. This game was close in the hits department with Glendale edging the Javelinas 13-to-11 but it would certainly seem the score indicates the deeper storyline of dominance: Glendale went 5-for-19 with RISP whereas Peoria was a mere 2-for-5.

Peoria (1-2) will be back on the diamond tomorrow night versus the Mesa Solar Sox (2-1). They will once again play at 8:30 CST.
