I’m not sure how Wisconsin intends to manage its staff load, as they’re down to 13 active pitchers, 8 of whom have pitched in the last 48 hours. And today’s starter Jaron DeBerry has yet to surpass 4 innings in any appearance.

Du courage, men. Maybe Chandler Welch should make a grand return.

The issue is if you return Chandler Welch then Carolina is going to be in a tough spot pitching wise. The system’s pitching is pretty light at the lower levels and AA and especially AAA are a bit overflowing

OF Kenny Fenelon is out of the lineup for the 2nd straight game, so this now constitutes a valid concern (in my opinion),

But at least OF Frandy Lafond is back in action after exiting yesterday’s win early.

We’ve got starting pitching debuts from 17-year olds Diustin Mayorquin (RHP - Nicaragua) and Joan Pena (LHP - D.R.).

I don't know where to put this, so I'm putting it here.  Maybe everyone already knows all this, but . . .

The Brewers have the youngest hitters in the complex league, A (Carolina), and AA (Southern), all at least a full year younger than league average.  In each of those leagues, the Brewers' offensive production comfortably leads the league.  I did a quick rundown using OPS and runs per game, because those numbers were easily available on BR.

Numbers are Brewers / (league average)

Complex Brewers - OPS: .864 (.746); R/g: 7.48 (5.52)

A (Mudcats) - OPS: .767 (.672); R/g: 6.14 (4.75)

AA (Shuckers) - OPS: .713 / (.651); R/g: 4.76 (3.81)

A few more tidbits . . . the Brewers have the second-youngest hitters at A+; their production is near the bottom of the league.  On the pitching side, the Brewers have the youngest pitchers in the complex league and A.  Using ERA and WHIP (again, easily available), the complex kids are near the top of the 15-team league (4th in ERA, 1st in WHIP), while the A pitchers are a mixed bag -- second of 12 teams in ERA but sixth in WHIP.  Wisconsin pitchers are middling by age and production.  Biloxi pitchers are on the older end and doing not great.

Nice 4-run 3rd inning from DSL Brewers Blue to push their lead to 5-0, including a Tarazona single, Seijas double and Leonard Rijo 2-out, 2-run triple.

0-0 in the Brewers Gold vs. Cubs Blue contest.

4 scoreless for Pena, 3 scoreless for Mayorquin thus far.

Mayorquin’s professional debut: gave up consecutive singles to start the game, then retired 15 of the next 16 batters (issued 1 walk). Zero runs allowed. 4 Ks.

When you get hit on the chin and respond like that, we take notice!

Nice pitching day pretty much all around on the island today...

Raymond Sarmiento (17yo)
3 IP | 1 R | 4 H | 0 BB | 5 K

Joan Pena (17yo)
5 IP | 2 R | 3 H | 1 BB | 4 K

Jhosep Ospino (20yo)

Jeez. To your point, Hostetler has now gone on Carolina’s injured list. Argh!

19-year old RHP Bryce Meccage (2.45 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 9.5 K/9 in 25.2 IP) starts Game 1 of Low-A Carolina’s home doubleheader against Charleston, with the series presently tied 1-1. DH Eric Bitonti has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games, with an astounding 7 homers in this stretch.

Should also mention that OF Gerlyn Payano (350k), OF Alexander Frias (350k), and 3B Sharlisson De La Rosa (200k) have yet to debut in the DSL and were listed as our 5th, 6th, and 9th biggest bonuses of the year.

Frias and De La Rosa are on the injured list, while Payano has been listed on the bench. Hopefully these guys are able to start playing soon.

Pretty crazy run he's on.

Thru May 23rd (170 PA)
211/324/317 (86 wRC+)
14.1 BB% | 34.1 K%

After May 23rd (39 PA)
333/385/833 (223 wRC+)
7.7 BB% | 35.9 K%

Kinda surprised he hasn't been able to trim the K% even a little bit during this hot streak though.

The more I watch Bryce Meccage the more impressed I become. So polished, such depth in his arsenal for a high school arm and completely at home throwing his three major offerings in any count with all getting pretty strong swing and miss.

I'd love to see the kick changeup coming through more and more but even so, he looks a class above.

More so than Knoth and Letson managed last season for my money

Then the pitch after I said this he gives up a roped double off the wall in LF.

Meccage just really lost the feel in the 3rd and 4th innings.  Lots of bad misses. His day is done after 3.2 IP.

3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 5 SO with the bases loaded and top of the order coming up so more runs might hit the line. 75 pitches, 37 strikes.

I retract everything. How dare I insinuate a 2024 draftee could surpass a member of the 2023 class. All bow to Knoth

Man this is a massive spot for RHP Dikember Sanchez. Can we insert a quarter and buy the 2024 version? Quick someone ask Chris Edwards!

Was there ever really a doubt 2025 Dikember wasn't going to allow at least one run there via WP or HB? Grateful he only gave up one.

RHP KC Hunt is coming off 2 decent starts (10.1 IP, 3 R, 15 Ks) and aims to lead AA Biloxi to a 3-1 home series lead over 2nd place Montgomery. 1B Luke Adams’ on-base streak has reached 27 games.
