I'd guess they didn't want to mess with the defensive aspects of catching in such a big game and with one of our best pitchers.  Probably still getting him up to speed on that side of it and he'll get out there for a game in WAS.   Plus an off day tomorrow for Contreras.

Yeah that's totally defensible. What is much more questionable is Yelich DHing instead of Jansen,

With the announcers talking about it probably being his last game as an Oriole, O,Hearn belted a 2 run HR.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

You’d think we have Cal Raleigh catching the way Murphy can seem to give him a rest. But really, Contreras has been closer to Joey Ortiz. Plus Jansen vs a lefty is a good bat and Contreras should be at most DH today. It’s becoming asinine at this point

With the day off tomorrow it's not too likely Yelich will sit. I don't see Jansen pushing $26 million Yelich into a DH platoon quite yet.

Yelich has sat against lefties plenty of times. You're right that maybe the day off is playing into Murphy's decision.

Not sure if that statement is correct because Contreras has 17 hits and 2 walks in the last 15 games. Also 8 hits in the last 7 games .286 which is better than his career numbers.

Another thing to note on Contreras playing so much again this year is that they did this last year too and he seems to hit a wall at the end of the year.   And that's before factoring in his finger issue and that he's not near the hitter this year as last

ETA: seems memory was skewed by the playoffs, his 2h and september was not as bad as I thought

Yeah, I know, and I think he just did before a day off last week. But he doesn't always and is our biggest power threat this year. I would just rather see him in the lineup than Jansen I guess, maybe just need time for the new guy to grow on me a bit,

The LHP and hitting better yesterday is why I’d probably DH him instead of Yelich today, but Contreras has a 706 OPS in the last week so it’s not like he’s been on fire. his 649 OPS over June and July shows how much he’s struggling.

Jansen getting a dose of reality. He's here in case of injury. Not because of injury. Watching Yelich against a lefty should be fun and hitting cleanup? 😀

That makes NO sense at all...  Murphy being Murphy.

Probably has a lot more to do with it being a big game and he’s only been here 2 days to learn the staff.  Don’t need to have Freddy face the Cubs throwing to a new catcher.

Yeah, I think this board is being way too hard on William...

If Cal Raleigh is the bar, every other catcher in the league is going to be closer to Joey Ortiz offensively.

Nowhere did I say anything close to Cal Raleigh being the bar. My point was that for a catcher to be playing as much as Contreras, you’d think he was hitting like Raleigh. Because he is hitting more like Ortiz (650 OPS last 2 months), maybe a reasonable amount of days off would help. It sure wouldn’t hurt
