Friday's Birthday:

Mystery man Manuel Castro, a switch-hitting shortstop out of Venezuela signed back in January 2025 as part of that winter's international class, has yet to debut. Castro is not listed on any complex league roster, and we assume he is still with the organization until told otherwise. Friday marks Castro's 18th birthday.

Just a few waaaay too early DSL stats:

There are 51 teams in the league.

Both Brewers teams are top 10 in OPS.

Brewers Gold leads the league in HRs, Blue is 8th. Both are top 5 in slugging, with older teams all ahead of them.

Gold is the 4th youngest team in the league.

DSL Brewers Blue are in a lightning delay tied 3-3 in the 5th inning, after throwing a wild pitch to allow the game-tying run with 2 outs in the top half of the frame.

Just in case this game and its stats are wiped from existence, we should recognize the dominant first career start by 17-year old RHP Daniel Munoz (4 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 7 Ks). 16-year old 3B Leanders Matos is also 2-for-2 with 2 doubles, an RBI and a stolen base (.391 AVG, 1.387 OPS).

The High-A Timber Rattlers host Great Lakes for a doubleheader today, with RHP Ethan Dorchies starting Game 1 and looking to build on a solid last outing (5 1/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER, 5 Ks). 3B Andrew Fischer and RF Josiah Ragsdale have on-base streaks of 27 and 18 games, respectively.

Red-hot RHP Carlos Carra (17.1 IP, 3 R; 20 Ks in last 3 starts) and Low-A Wilson seek to claim a 3-1 series lead at Hill City. 3B Filippo Di Turi has a 20-game on-base streak, though oddly with no multi-hit games in this stretch.

Guessing this is a classic ACL MILB box score glitch, as it’s showing Cole Phillips starting at 3rd base for the ACL Brewers tonight. That’d be quite the comeback and story for the long-injured pitching prospect that we plucked in the Rule 5 draft (minor league portion).

Must be newcomer Leonard Rijo instead. TBD.

Luke Adams isn’t intimidated by a 6-0 deficit.

Doubled and scored in the 5th inning. Smacked this 2-run homer in the 6th.

Sounds trail 7-4 in the 7th frame.

Anyone have any notes on Leanders Matt's? He is a 16 year old tearing up the DSL albeit in a small sample size.

Oh yeah, Frias is a beast and needs to be in Wilson 3 for 3 at last check just a HR shy of the cycle.

There’s the cycle, but not for Frias. Is there a chance that Juan Martinez is the latest hit over power guy I get overly high on after they crush the ACL? Yes. Do I care? At this point, no.

Was just looking at Juan Martinez earlier today and was like "woah, that's some pretty impressive performance between last year's second go around in the DSL and the start of his ACL this year."

Then I remembered guys like Juan Ortuno and Demetrio Nadal and some more I'm surely forgetting (was Juan Baez one of these guys once too?) and at this point it's kinda like until they at least make it to Wisco carrying over the same encouraging traits its more something to keep an eye on than anything to get too excited about.

Which might sound dismissive, but it's really just a testament to how long the road is for most of the seven figure international teenagers, much less the pop up guys who have to prove it stop after stop for at least half a decade.

But yeah, that's also the one of the funnest (most fun?) things about following the system. With their recent dev record you kind of have to keep an eye on everyone that shows a glimpse of promise because they certainly are looking for talent in all corners and have proven adept at finding it.

Baez and Tyler Rodriguez were two who immediately sprang to mind. I will say, most of the guys with Martinez’s combination of contact skills, age and passable ISO in the ACL league-wide post-pandemic who quickly struggled when they reached full season ball were players like Baez, who almost never walked. While his walk rates haven’t been exceptional, they have also never seemed out of line with what you would expect from someone who strikes out as rarely as he does.

I'm not here for long... I leave in about an hour and a half to head to Milwaukee for the next 2 nights. I definitely did enjoy the Rattlers. If they could ever get a Breeze flight from Raleigh-Durham International to Appleton International instead of the Madison flight they have, I'll be back for sure.
