Rating the Young Starters

It seems like every team is going to demand a controllable young pitcher for a rotation upgrade.  Who are our best? Who wouldn't you trade?

1.) Miz (not getting traded, #1)

2.) Drohan (not getting traded, #2)

3.) Ashby (not getting traded, huge value)

4.) Harrison (not getting traded, #3)

5.) Patrick (not getting traded, incredibly valuable. If the Brewers pick up a pen piece is he a rotation option?)

6.) Henderson (most finished pitcher but tradeable for a top of the rotation pitcher)

7.) Sproat (best pure stuff but tradeable. future reliever?)

8.) Gasser (if he gets you a front line starter so be it)

8.) Crow (injuries are a concern, tradeable)

10.) Gordon (must be a reason we acquired him? still very tradeable)

11.) Rodriguez (throw in on a trade. he is still really young.)

I think Hardin and Leston are a ways away and won't impact the 2026 or 2027 season.

I think Hardin is a shoe-in for sometime in 2027, especially if we trade away a couple of the guys you mentioned in the first post.  I don't want to trade him, he stays.

I would put Henderson and Drohan on the NO TRADE list.  These two guys should be our future along with Harrison and Miz.

I'd trade Gasser without thinking twice about it.  Sproat too if it had to be done, but I wouldn't like it.  C-Rod and Crow too, I don't see any kind of future with the Brewers, but maybe another team might?  C-Rod is probably close to worthless as a trade chip at this point.

If Sproat can’t find any semblance of consistency, we may see Hardin up sooner rather than later.

That's my best attempt at tiering the Brewers young pitching.

Probably draw the No Trade / Would Trade line between Patrick and DL Hall.

Don't think they will deal any of the Top 6 guys (unless they have serious concerns about Henderson's ability to stay healthy long term), 

If they were going to deal someone from the 07 to 10 range (Sproat, Hardin, Letson, Patrick) I would imagine it will be for someone with multiple years of team control remaining.

It's a tough question because one has to weigh "playoff value" and "$/WAR-value". For me that makes Sproat both really easy to deal, AND really tough to trade away.

I think a lot of the "trade from depth" talk is legitimate. I can imagine this front office believing the best thing to do is to trade from the fringes of the 26-man. Or to try and do an add/subtract-roster-Rochambeau-type of deadline.

This deadline is getting really fun, because I think it's so unpredictable, as to how aggressive the Brewers will be, AND I keep changing my mind as to how aggressive I want them to be, as the Sproat case study explains.

I still believe in Sproat. Think in year 2 or 3 he has a good chance to break out into a mid or top rotation guy. Don’t think we see much of that this year, not for more than a few innings at a time anyway. Therefore would want to avoid a sell low trade with him. 
 

Mis Drohan Harrison are untradeable and I can’t imagine a trade with Henderson in it that I would like because I think he’s set up for a strong 2nd half anyway. 
 

I’m not overly attached to any other name there. If we traded Ashby there would have to be a very premium name coming back because Ashby is a 2026 contributor too.

3) Priester (he's still only 25; nobody's trading for him right now, but he needs to be a part of the "young starters" long-term conversation)
4) Drohan (nope)
5) Sproat (needs some time in the lab and in AAA, needs to be a big return)
6) Henderson (injuries scare me, would move for a big time rental such as Skubal)
7) Gasser (has a blowup here and there, but 75% of his starts end up being solid, will trade for the right return)
8) Letson (a ways off, under control for so long it can't be a rental)
9) Hardin (not sure what his upside is, but under control for so long it can't be a rental)
10) Crow (like Henderson, injuries scare me, no issues trading for a rental)
11) Gordon (27 already, no issues trading for a rental)
12) Wichrowski (no issues trading for a rental)
13) M. Rodriguez (too many HRs given up, would trade for a rental)

Not starters - Ashby, Patrick
