I will never understand this trade for May.  Like at all.    Having him really did not change our outlook in the playoffs.  It didn’t change our division or top two seed chances.  (To be honest it might even lower them if he continues to pitch like he has).  Romero might be useful but he still hasn’t thrown an inning and it’s been a month already

i get prospect hoarding can be a thing but if you wanted to get rid of those guys maybe package them in the offseason for someone useful.

it felt like a pure desperation move by the GM.   Like he felt he had to do something.    And with  division rival.    Ugh

May’s first two starts with Milwaukee were very good. Third start he was shelled and fourth start he was hit on the back after one pitch.

May is capable of being a reliable playoff starter. Less than Skubal but more than perhaps any other starter acquired at the deadline.

We’ve seen the highs and lows of Mayday. We need consistency from him. He knows that.

His first start was kind of lucky.    That’s why the third start was more concerning.   Then his next start the very first pitch he’s get lined almost off his forehead.     I don’t know about the guy.

like I said does or did he change our outlook at all when the change was made.    I don’t think so.   I think we are where we are now with or without him and he isn’t going to impact the playoffs imo

At worst, May is reliable depth. You might be right that Miz, Henderson and Harrison might be our top three starters in the playoffs. There is no guarantee that all three of the young arms remain healthy through September.

At best, he is the second most effective starter acquired at the deadline

Executive of the Year Award:

Milwaukee Brewers President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Matt Arnold made history by winning the Major League Baseball Executive of the Year Award in both 2024 and 2025, becoming the first two-time winner of the honor.

Little side note - I just took a look at May's first 4 games. Sanchez caught the first two. Contreras caught Game 3 and was catching Game 4.

If May shoves today I may be inclined to request May/Sanchez until it doesn't work.

May has been a quality start or blow up kind of pitcher all year. If anyone can get consistency out of him, it's probably the Brewers.

If folks hate the trade, I get it, but they really should answer the following question: what would May and Romero have to do to make you feel good about it?

Without an answer to that, it's just hating to hate, or hating on principle (the latter of which is okay too, but then complaining about every May start isn't worth much--you'd hate the trade no matter what).

If May can get us 3-4 more starts (hopefully 6 innings, less than 3 ER) to keep our Big 3 "Miz, Henderson, Harrison" fresh going into the post-season, I'll call that a win.

Romero, hopefully giving us a live arm for the bullpen for the playoffs, though it would be nice to see some "proof of concept" before the playoffs start.

This trade still blows my mind as well and I still absolutely hate it.  All that said, from a PR/morale standpoint, we had to do something after the Cheaters got Skubal... and (after all the emotions), it looked like May fit what the Brewers do pretty well.

Given how successful this franchise has been the past 8-10 seasons, especially the past 3, I'll give our terrific front office the benefit of the doubt.

I know it sounds crazy right now, but maybe May will provide more value to us in 2027 (via exercising the option) than he has so far in 2026.   I know he has a track record/pedigree, but 2026 definitely not looking like his finest year and maybe a chance to work a full 12 months with the Brewers organization would be valuable for both sides

Contreras gets the day off before the Cubs series where they might want him to catch all 4 games

Good Move to get Bill a day of rest.  I know its not another lefty, but would have liked to get Turang a day (or several) off as well.  Not sure what is going on with Vaughn out again either.

All the said, after frustrations earlier in the week, ole Murph seems to be pushing the right buttons.

Let's go for the KILL, sweep the Rangers.  Hopefully heading into the post-season we can learn to finish, regardless of what the standings show.  With some tough Cubs series coming up, maintaining/extending our lead on LA & Atlanta would be nice

The only way it’s useful is if Romero gets huge leverage outs in the postseason or may has to replace a starter because of injury etc and gets wins in the playoffs.

I just don’t see how adding them changed the odds/outlook

Who is your 4th starter for us this post season? I'm assuming Miz, Harrison, Henderson are the first 3. Who are you starting in a Gm4?

Its important to consider how small the sample size is.  Looking at May's game logs (not really counting the 4th game), his first two starts were pretty solid, and obviously the 3rd was a disaster.

Giving up a ton of value for a rental (ANY rental including Skubal) leaves you vulnerable to small sample sizes.

I think its either May or a bullpen game.   No way its Gasser or Sproat.  I could see Drohan, but that would likely be as an opener as part of a bullpen game

There was exactly one player traded at the deadline that would have changed the Brewers odds/outlook…and he predictably went to the Dodgers.

For teams like the Brewers who are already far out in front of the pack with no glaring holes (like the Cubs pitching for one example), the overwhelming majority of deadline deals are about depth and buttressing a teams current odds.

If the Brewers hold the #1 seed & May/JoJo pitch quality postseason innings the trade will be a win (until Ragsdale & Frias make their way to MLB and help STL get back to the playoffs).

Without acquiring May, we’d have Sproat or Crow as our 6th starter, and having 6 starters is about letting our top line guys get more rest between starts. When you look at it like that, May is a definite upgrade (or should be). I don’t think it changes the likelihood of winning the division or a top 2 seed - that would probably happen anyway - but if keeps our guys healthier, that’s a win.
