  1. one can only hope.
  2. i so much want to be a 'yeah Brewers' guy right now. desperately. it's just i don't see what they've done since April to make me want to say that. it just feels like now, when they have some stupid loss, it's expected, and a win feels so out of the ordinary. i have a Mets-fan coworker and yesterday i didn't even feel like taunting him, but only said that it was a great game all around. how lame is that? deep down i feel like i shouldn't say anything because i'm waiting for us to lose the next two games and drop the series. then there we go, we lose the second game. i'm tired of this; winning just isn't expected from me anymore, it's more like a surprise. i used to be anxious to see a box score and how the players did, but now i fall in a funk even before i open it up. time to wake up, guys!
  3. when personal things happen to athletes i always think of what Lombardi said to his players, that there should be three things in your life: 1. God 2. Family 3. Football those three things, only those three, and in that order. there's a point you have to let Linebrink be human and be with his wife and first child, and i think that trumps the $35 i'd pay to see the baseball game. and heck, if you're trying to resign a guy, saying that he should be with the team and not with his wife in the hospital probably isn't a good start to negotiations.
  4. i wouldn't necessarily say he'd never be traded, but i don't see what could really be improved. he's having a down year vs. last year, so wouldn't fetch as much value (plus we all know it's only about getting used to CF), and he's still basically cheap for the next four years. i don't see what sort of return we could get that could match or better those factors. plus it goes against the Bill Bean model (not that Melvin is necessarily following it) that we don't really have a CF with star potential to take Hall's place should he leave. if the idea was to trade him for some big-$ star player, it would probably make more sense to bid for one on the FA market instead, especially considering there are some good CFers on the market this offseason.
  5. the Braves have been the team that has always been most willing to deal its pitching prospects, so i don't know if i'd totally think the Braves were going all or nothing this year. and the Saltalamacchia move was a trade done out of depth, so it didn't really effect them much. and heck, the Braves always seem to know something about their pitchers that nobody else ever seems to.
  6. does bullpen work tend to be easier on the arm, or is starting work better? i just wonder if the Brewers will want to baby him just a little bit to get him a couple solid, injury-free years. coming back from all that, i'd hate to see him overworked and hurt his arm again (Cubbed).
  7. i think that lineup's pretty much right on. sometimes i wonder if there might be more of a shakeup in the rotation to get one of Villy/Parra in the rotation for next year. and isn't ZJ out of options? so he'd move to long relief and Villy could be shifted somewhere else. no way I see Graffy back. he'll want and deserve a starting spot somewhere next year. his accepting arby last year seemed more a ploy to get to San Diego than to really stay with the Brewers. i only see bullpen help as an issue. i'm pretty confident we'll find a LF good enough in FA or via trade, or a CF who shifts over, there are a ton of them as FAs next year.
  8. stupid internet laws, i've got to drive 9 hours to do any gambling now (don't live in WI anymore).
  9. i don't know about milwaukee, though they should have one, but Madison has a government service to help tennants know their rights. i've used them before when there were rats in the apartment building. sorry i don't have a link, but they should be searchable.
  10. yeah, i laughed when that showed up at the top of the ML page. one from four days ago i hadn't seen. touche, my friend. good one.
  11. tell me you didn't just mention 2008. the Cubs have been holding up those stupid "wait till next year" signs for 100 years. despite our youth, we have no guarantee of success next year or any other year. this is our year. 07. i'll definitely be upset to not make the playoffs this year, and thinking of 08 sure isn't going to help. whoa, sorry, that came off a little rude. my apologies. i think i'm still fuming a little bit from that extra-innings, bases-loaded double play a few nights ago.
  12. i think there are a lot of reasons to panic. nothing wrong with a little calm apprehension, and i haven't really seen much 'sky is falling' threads on this board in a while. plus if Ruth did come down in the offseason and offer us a two game lead, i can't figure that everyone would have automatically taken it. It's still a bad division and we have a good team, better than we've been showing the last couple months. i used to be rah-rah even during the May slump, but yeah, i'm starting to panik a little bit. though we can assume the Cubs won't keep playing .800 ball, we also can't assume they won't stick around and give a great chase. if the Cubs built a 4-game lead in the next two weeks, do we have the team to catch up and play .800 ball ourselves the way everyone but Braun's majorly slumping right now?
  13. $2.50 and a Coke says Thatcher pitching in San Diego is as good as Linebrink in Milwaukee. Hard to say a bad thing about Inman. Hopefully he's on a faster track to the majors with San Diego than he was in Milwaukee.
  14. i'm still thinking Angel is #1 yet, unless he comes back next year with a post-roids slump. if the Captain was a bit closer to the majors, maybe that would change for me. However I still defer to some of you minor-league guys who have the real knowledge.
  15. I hid my backpack in some bushes at a train station and headed straight to Shea when I found out the Brewers were in town. Can't say i felt my life was in danger on the No. 7, but then again i probably looked like a bum. Headed out of town right after the game, which we won by 3 after scoring 5 runs in the 9th.
  16. there she goes, stealing Paris' idea. boy, Hollywood sure can't come up with anything original, can they?
  17. maybe it's just me, but the 1-year late guy sounds inadvertently hilarious to me. i can picture myself pretending to be wowed by this "new" technology and asking him questions as if I'd been living in a cave. of course you'd have to throw in Mr. Burns-type phrases like auto-gyro, moving-picture-show and mechanical buggy. granted, things get old, fast.
  18. someone tried to pull a Melvin on Melvin the rarely seen Double Melvin?
  19. nice post, Monty. what i think about with players reaching career contract time is that they're going to demand a 5- or 6-year contract. so we'd have to hold LaPorta from a starting OF spot for an awful long time, to the point that he would age and lose a lot of prospect status. in all this, I struggle to think of how to treat LaPorta in all this. is he the sure-fire player Melvin should be assuming will start sometime in 09 (and therefore change his FA/trade strategy right now); if he shouldn't be thought of much at all, since he's still a big project and because minor-leaguers don't pan out; or if there's some sort of middle-ground.
  20. Belliard is one of my least favorite MLB players...not because he's a bad guy, but I just hate how he looks, running with his gloves in his hands. I've heard of other players doing that before. the reason for running with the gloves in your hands is that if you have to slide into second base, holding the gloves forces you to slide with your fingers tucked in and not pointed straight out, preventing the runner from jamming his finger and getting injured.
  21. Could be. I think the way to examine that one would be to create lineups with Braun, Fielder, and 7 average players then seeing what happens. The way Hardy's hitting lately, I'm pretty sure we've got that right now.
  22. pretty much anyone of the age or declining ability that would accept a two-year contract would work for me. we'd have our stopgap for the meantime, and then 09 would be the year when we could gradually break in a guy like LaPorta.
  23. wouldn't you rather have the slower Fielder hitting after the faster Braun? Fielder hits a double and Braun should score, but probably not the other way around. Plus Braun is putting up some good SB numbers, so right now he's still setting the table in some sense for Fielder and Hall. if Braun hit any lower, the diamond would (in theory) have a batter or two on and negate Braun's speed.
  24. yeah, i'm like some posters above. i'm so jaded by pro athletes that i first thought the title was sarcastic and Green did something stupid. that's always awesome news to hear. some athletes do so much for other people (Jeffrey Hammonds is a good local example), and it's too bad that's not the kind of news that gets the most press attention.
  25. boy, i'm always complaining about my workplace and i get none of this. it's actually just the opposite experience. the phone never rings, very few emails and my office goes months at a time without saying a single word to one another. it was heaven for a month, but now i'm dying for any human interaction whatsoever. so i guess my complaint/most annoying thing are the coworkers who make zero effort to communicate with each other.
