  1. well I'm happy if for no other reason than this keeps him away from the Cubs. although it would have been hilarious defensively to see him and Soriano patrolling the corners at Wrigley.
  2. Peavy will not waive his no trade clause to come to Milwaukee.
  3. I would eat salary to get Hughes, not Kennedy though. I still find it hilarious that the Yankees want anyone to eat salary, especially with the amount of spending they're doing.
  4. I think people should stop expecting Hughes to be in a deal where all we send is Cam and Hall. not going to happen.
  5. not a fan of Melky at all. Maybe he can bounce back, but i'd much rather see pitching, marginal as it may be, come back for Cam. Maybe this will free up some cash to sign Fuentes or even JJ to a deal though.
  6. Thanks for doing this. When it's all line up like this, it's quite easy to see how Melvin wouldn't want to go after a closer like Fuentes as it'd leave us very little wiggle room for anything else. That Suppan number just sticks out like a sore thumb, haha. This makes me feel like like Cam might be gone in order to facilitate other deals.
  7. I didn't really want Putz, but that's one less guy out there. Are the Mets planning on signing Kerry Wood and Trevor Hoffman too? I can't imagine Putz will be too happy about being K-Rod's set up guy.
  8. look on the bright side, at least we won't have enough money to sign Jon Garland! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif I'm going to try not to freak out because it is still early and one should never believe what Melvin says, but it's going to be tough.
  9. I think they're not looking into Hoffman because he'd really only be on a 1 year deal and they're going to punt the 2009 season and prepare for 2010. Of course they're not going to say that explicitly, but I don't think we'll see any expensive signings that can't also help us 2-3 years down the line. At this point, i'd be surprised if we saw any expensive signings at all. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, I was just hoping they'd try to compete this year, which is not looking like it will be the case.
  10. well my confidence about the 2009 season has just about gone down the toilet.
  11. It's kind of frustrating that Melvin seems like he's opposed to making Sheets any kind of offer. Has he seen what our rotation is going to look like next year? I'd rather gamble with Sheets than trade Prince and open up other holes.
  12. opt out clause after 3/$69mm according to mlbtraderumors.com. I find it very hard to believe that we couldn't have competed with that, but in the end, if he gets hurt, he'd leave a lot of dough on the table over the life of the full deal.
  13. I would agree 100% with Strawbossisevil on the need for a designated freakout thread. People can talk about Jon Garland being our ace next year all the time in there. Makes me a little nervous that Wood and Cleveland are close, but if K-Rod is getting this kind of deal, i'd hope Melvin is all over Fuentes right now. I do think it's hilarious that K-Rod started out at 5/$75mm and settled for this. Cordero has got to be laughing right now.
  14. there is absolutely no way that can be true. although it does fit in with the plan the Royals apparently have to have the lowest collective team OBP in baseball history.
  15. Sheets or no Sheets, I would be absolutely shocked if Melvin signs Jon Garland. I seriously don't think anyone has anything to be worried about there. According to mlbtraderumors.com, the Yanks are expected to make Sheets an offer in the next 72 hours in the 2/$30mm range.
  16. http://www.mlbtraderumors...8/12/cc-sabathia-rum.html Speculation that we could offer an opt-out clause after 3 years, which I would absolutely love. Basically turns this into a 3 year deal, which would be better for us anyways really. We get the benefit of essentially a shorter deal, CC gets the benefit of being able to cash in again (in possibly a more friendly economic climate). Win-Win.
  17. I would think we could get much, much more than that for Prince. Putz is good, but missed a huge chunk of the year last year as did Bedard. I thought I had heard rumblings that Bedard could be a non-tender candidate even. If Prince goes, I would think that one of Clement, Felix or Brandon Morrow would have to come back.
  18. I really hope that he's bluffing on that. Wood and Hoffman could probably be had with 2, maybe 3 year deals. With the options we have at closer right now, I think we need to make a play on one of these guys.
  19. all joking aside, isn't Yu Darvish supposed to be one of the top Japanese players? One would think that any 'trade' would have to start with a Gamel/Prince type.
  20. plus, we'd only have him on a 1 year deal so we get the walk year benefits that produced his freakish 2004. I can't imagine we'd have to give up much to get him if we take on all the salary. I think this makes all the sense in the world given our problems at 3rd, hopefully Melvin will at least give Jack a call and ask about him.
  21. even though we lost the game, the pinch hit BOMB he hit off Joe Nathan at MP was probably the most exciting thing i've ever witnessed in person. I still get a little pumped thinking about it. For that, he'll always have a special place in my heart. now go get Beltre Doug!
  22. I understand that our hands were tied with the whole CC thing, but I really would have liked to see us make a run at Vazquez and Swisher when the Sox were selling.
  23. I really wouldn't be concerned about the Cubs getting Mark Teahen and the Brewers not doing anything as of now. Like it's been mentioned, I can't see us making any major signings before the arbitration deadline at the end of the month.
