Josh Bell is a pretty good hitting AA, 22 year old 3B. If fielding pct means anything, he can't play defense. His minor league stats show his as good average/high obp/ decent power guy. Nearly at Gamel's level. So if he could stay at 3B he'd be a prime prospect and quite a steal for Sherrill. If he moves to 1B, he'd still be a good player. Since the Orioles could lose both Mora and Huff at the end of the season Bell has a real chance to make the team. Steve Johnson is a lefty from Baltimore just making it to AA mid season. Only 21 and has a good K rate. He's the son of former Oriole pitcher Dave Johnson. (not the Davey Johnson that played 2B for them and managed a bunch of teams to the playoffs). The Orioles should hit .500 in 2010 and have an outside chance for a Tampa Bay type breakout in the new couple years.

    Yes! Craig Counsell!

Nice job, naivin. Kinda makes me realize it's not all hopeless.

He has a good schtick. Saw his YouTube video about a year ago. He's gonna take this thing as far as it will go. Good for him. Save your money dude. I thought the Prince home run was hilarious.

You're memory is probably right, Roderick. As I said, had Doug traded Hall at the time it would have looked like a Pirates type move, trading every player once they get good.

Hart should still be relatively cheap next year. He's at least treading water and is not a bad 6 or 7 hitter. Hardy is going to be to expensive to justify keeping, especially with Escobar. Hopefully there's a big market contender who can tolerate the inconsistent bat, with the hope he bounces back for a big year in 2010.

Let me add Prince has done a fine job at 1B this year. I don't know how much weight he lost in the offseason (20-30 lbs?) but he seems to run better and move much better around the bag. To me he no longer looks like a DH playing out of position. He could be adequate at 1B for several more seasons.

In his previous 10 starts before Monday he had a 4.20 ERA. Of course the league was still pounding him to the tune of an .856 OPS, so I guess you can argue Monday's game was inevitable.

I really like your entire post here. Looking back the best move would have been to trade Hall for a top pitching prospect when his value was highest. Another possibility would be trading Weeks for a similarly developed pitcher and moving Hall to 2nd. Either of those moves involved much more risk though. It also would have seriously challenged fan loyalty. Brewer fans had grown accustomed to seeing players traded once they became expensive in the previous several years. Trading Hall would have looked terribly Bando-esque at the time.

I'm worried this is going to force Melvin to overpay for some average-ish innings muncher.

It's probably a bad thing for the Brewers. Until that 6th inning Monday Suppan had a sub 5 ERA (oh boy!). It's tough to expect anything better from Wright or Dillard. If he goes on the DL it could force Melvin to over trade for Doug Davis or Garland.

When Hall was 25 he had an OPS of .837 in 546 plate appearances. When he was 26 he posted an .899 OPS in 608 PA. (Higher than Braun's OPS in 2008!) After that season he was eligible for arbitration. Although I had suspected he was a hacker, it was difficult to deny that level of performance. Scouts always like his "tools", so it was reasonable to see him as a very good maturing player. Signing him to a 4 year/$24 million deal didn't seem wild at the time. In fact it was the exact move that posters in other topics criticize Melvin for not doing enough: he locked up one of the best core young players to a long term deal. We can't have it both ways. We can't say Melvin needs to lock up the core players and at the same time criticize him for signing Hall because after the fact things turned sour.

McGehee is the 3rd best hitter on the team, Cameron 4th, Counsell 5th, a bit above Hart.

Suppan was at 96 pitches and clearly gassed. Better to pull the starter at that point and hope he's sharper his next outing. Looper gave 6 innings on Sunday; Difelece and Smith were the only relievers on the roster who pitched that game. Of course Villy was unavailable, but that left Swindle, Dillard, Coffey, Stetter and Hoffman available last night. I agree it's the pitcher's job to get the outs, but it's the managers job to put his players in the best position to be successful.

Suppan was at 96 pitches after 5 innings. He just experienced a total meltdown and was obviously laboring. At that point it's better to lift him and hope he's stronger next outing. As tenuous as every Suppan outing is, he has delivered 9 quality starts this season. That 1/3rd of an inning in the 6th raised his ERA from 4.89 to 5.27.

I figured Macha would be a huge improvement over Yost. But I'm so hopping mad he put Suppan out there for the 6th inning that he may never win back my loyalty. I'm watching you, Ken Macha. No more stupid decisions!
  17. joepepsi
I agree with Ennder. This game is on Macha as much as Suppan. Seeing Suppan out there for the 6th was the first time I have been furious with Macha. With Yost it was at least 3-4 times a week. There's a point when a game is out of hand and you start worrying about tomorrow's game. But a one run difference heading into the 6th is not that point. I'd rather win the game being played and take my chances with tomorrow, than play for tomorrow and cross my fingers for the current game.

I don't know....signing Sheets to a long term contract is the same as signing any free agent to me. Cappy was a solid No.2 starter. Davis had a 3.92ERA in 3+ seasons with the Crew. Yo has been wonderful. Parra still shows potential. I can't think of another small market team who has swung as good a deal as Doug did for CC. It's expensive and risky to build a pitching staff through trades and free agency. They need to be better at drafting pitchers, something I believe they addressed this past draft.
  19. joepepsi
Harang is still pretty good. He's due $12.5 million in 2010. If he is traded during his contract 2011 becomes a mutual option at $13 million. If he's terrible he'll almost certainly take it. Arroyo makes $11 million 2010 and 2011. There's a team option for 2011, so if he's not worth it they can decline.

A 4.50 starter would be fantastic at this point! A good sinkerball pitcher is a beautiful thing to watch, so here's hoping he keeps the ball down and good things happen.

There's plenty of evidence that pitchers who throw 125 pitches in one game on average struggle for the next handful of games. If the Brewers can't hold onto a 4 run lead in the 8th they have a lot more wrong with them than worrying if the starter is fatigued. Yo leads the majors in walks. I don't think a fatigued arm is the way to improve his command.

While Hart is doing everything he can to show he's replaceable, he also hasn't been terrible. In his last 200 plate appearances he's hitting .271/.342/.446. That doesn't make him the All Star stud he looked like a couple years ago, but he's not a bad 6/7 hitter. Given his increased walk rate and speed, he could settle into a pretty decent 1 or 2 hitter also. Last winter I thought Hardy rated with Prince and Braun as the 3 hitters they should sign long term. I wanted to trade Hart. Now I've flipflopped. I'm ready to make room for Escobar at ss in 2010.
  23. joepepsi
If only Prince "played the game the right way" like David Eckstein!
  24. joepepsi
It begs the question, who of the current core major leaguers would you have had Melvin sign long term? He signed Braun and reportedly made an offer to Prince around the same time but was rejected. Remember he's a Boras client; Boras seldoms goes for these contracts. He signed Hall as he approached arbitration to what would have been a reasonable contract had Hall continued to perform. So who should he have signed long term? Hardy? Hart? Weeks?
  25. joepepsi
Dillard's K:BB ratio in Nashville is 1.05:1. Is there any reason to expect he'll do well as a major league starter?
