    Rehab assignments can last 30 days, past the 9/1 roster expansion date, so my guess is he goes on rehab assignment until 9/1 and becomes the position player callup. Not sure why people are so quick to dismiss a guy who was a 114 wRC+ last year as a healthy 25 year old, not to mention a gold glove winner.

    The Tigers might very well feel that it's harder for them to acquire quality pitching than it is to acquire quality hitting, and thus quality pitching is more valuable to them. If you look at the Brewers top prospects, that same thing could be said about the Brewers. I think we also may be over-valuing Pena relative to the industry. Pena had some unknown health scares, some minor injuries, and hasn't yet shown that he can make the jump to AA. There is upside, but there are also are risks with him, and risks lower value.

    People complain about the Brewers and their lack of execution, but if people watched enough games of other teams, they'd see just as many (and likely more) of the same issues.

    It looked like a ball, but I wouldn't call it "obvious": I'm very fine with saving the last challenge for the pitcher in the top of the 9th.

    Keep in mind that his shoulder was bothering him all year. Last year he was a .750 OPS, 2.9 bWAR / 3.6 fWAR player at age 25. That is, at worst, a well above average 4th OF who can play any OF position. And Lara's OPS is down to .678. I'm not considering him a big improvement just yet.

    I think they are doing him a favor because there is no playing time for him. He's the oldest OF on their roster and they have bigger investments in Wood (23), Crews (24), Lile (23), and Young (26). He was actually the 3rd oldest position player on their entire roster.

    The Dodgers are not the 2025 Dodgers. For all of the consternation about Yelich, Betts is having an even worse season and they keep hitting him in the middle of the lineup. Hernandez has a .739 OPS and Tucker has a .732 OPS. There's three positions where the Brewers have an offensive advantage (Pratt, Chourio, Bauers/Lara). Bauers/Vaughn are right there with Freeman. Turang is right there with Edman. Mitchell is right there with Pages. Contreras is right there with Will Smith. The Dodgers have an advantage at two positions (3B, DH), the Brewers have an advantage at three positions (SS, LF, RF). If you want to count Ortiz as the SS, then he's a wash with Betts this year, but then you have to factor in Alex Freeland (.622 OPS) at 2B and that's advantage Turang. That's just offense; defense is a different story that I'm not going to get into. Great pitching is going to shut down any lineup, not just the Brewers. So, the Brewers need great pitching to shut down the other team's lineup and keep it a close game. The Royals won a World Series by getting a lead through the 5th inning, and then throwing four shut-down relievers. They didn't win it by scoring 7 runs a game.

    Back to the Brewers, what some are focusing on is who will be a starter in the playoffs. When we talk about what the Brewers "needed" per the thread title, I think it could be argued that they "needed" quality innings just to get to the playoffs in one piece without turning their pitching staff into the 2025 Cubs. They have an inconsistent at best starter in Sproat, and they need to manage innings with others. They got one starter, and one reliever who can go multiple innings. We know the Brewers don't necessarily focus on who starts as much as who gets as many outs as they can as efficiently as possible. So, I think it can be argued that they got most of what they need, within the context of who was realistically available.

    McManus looked automatic in camp last year... we saw how that turned out, and how relevant kicking early in camp is to regular season performance.

    The Brewers home run rate against the Cubs in the playoffs last year was higher than the Dodgers home run rate over the entire playoffs. The Dodgers home run rate dropped by 29% in the playoffs. The data doesn't support your argument.

    Gentle reminder that the Brewers are 5th in all of MLB in runs scored per game. And the Cubs just completed a series against the Yankees at home where they scored 6 runs in 3 games, with 5 coming in one game. Saying that they've "been lagging behind all season" doesn't seem true either.

    I think it was Doug Melvin who said that pitchers are worth more at the deadline and hitters are worth more in the offseason. And when a team acquires pitching, they usually have to give young pitching back; if they don't, they usually have to give up a lot of hitting. Sure seemed like that this year - when young pitching was given back, it didn't seem like teams had to give up as much as when only position players were going back. But the Brewers came out of the deadline without giving up Made, Pena, Fischer, Adamczewski, Pratt, Lara, Payne, Burke, Letson, Knoth, the elder Ebel, Hardin, Quero, or Dinges. The future is still bright. I think Romero is a sneaky good acquisition. Career 51% ground ball rate plays well with this defense, and has saved 12 games over the last 3 seasons.

    1) Because nobody trades away good bats. They are extremely valuable. B) They traded for Vaughn, Jansen, and Lockridge last year, with the last two specifically to address bad bench hitting. In 2023 they traded for Santana and Canha, and took a flyer on Josh Donaldson. For telling someone else that something went over their head, you sure don't have a good memory. Or research skills.

    Similar to some of the arguments for trading Ragsdale, with Brantley there wasn't any place for him. He was a below-average CF defensively, and they had Braun in LF (as well as Cameron and Gomez in CF). Going back to the much-maligned car analogy, if you have one sitting there in a garage not doing anything, it's still going to depreciate. Better to "trade it in" for some value than to lose that value.

    They've spent one true first round pick on a pitcher since 2014. The hell that they don't prioritize bats.

    "A baserunning mistake by Bauers" Was Erickson giving him the stop sign? If they know that the RF doesn't have a good/accurate arm, it's not a mistake.
