  1. I've been so busy the last two weeks that I was only able to watch one World Series game, and only part of it.
  2. To add to that, sometimes you need to overpay that first big fish to get some other fish to follow. Bringing in someone such as Cole early might get some other guys to think they have a chance at a World Series there without having to deal with the NY media circus or crappy weather in Boston/Chicago.
  3. It's a big reason. Competing teams are usually short on cap space so they can't take on much, and trading players with respect to signing bonuses is the same as releasing a player in that any prorated signing bonus gets allocated all to the following season just like dead money from cutting a player.
  4. https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/27957981/ncaa-clears-way-athletes-profit-names-images-likenesses Looks like the goal is January, 2021. Raises some interesting questions about when they will receive the money (while in school, or not until after they graduate) and what sources are eligible. I would think there would have to be regulations on promotions and advertising, but they definitely get a cut of jersey sales. Also... if the university chooses certain players over others for promotions, would that create a riff among players not chosen?
  5. And an Earl of Sandwich in Planet Hollywood and Caesar's. The Original 1762 might be the best sandwich I have ever had. I haven't been to Las Vegas in at least five years. Curious as to what rooftop bars have been built since then; I know of the ones at the nightclubs in the Cosmopolitan and Palms and the one at the Polo Towers. For watching games, I'm a fan of Blondie's Sports Bar in Planet Hollywood. Can't place bets there, but it's a good ol' sports bar. Just remember, if you want to walk from one casino to another, make sure you have really comfortable shoes. They're a lot farther apart than they look.
  6. Michigan hasn't beaten Ohio State since 2011. The last four years: 62-39, 31-20, 30-27 (2 OT), 42-13. Don't underestimate the impact that bringing Urban Meyer out of retirement had on that program.
  7. The problem isn't the talent on the DL, it's that they only have two DL on the field. A 2-4-5 is not going to control the LOS against a 3-WR read option team. 5 OL versus 2 DL; the OL is going to win in the run game.
  8. I think JJ Watt is pretty close. But they certainly don't have anyone like that now.
  9. The 2-4-5 that the Badgers run against these up-tempo read-option offenses does not work. Two DL versus 5 OL, and they will get gashed in the run game. Two weeks in a row. Against a read-option offense you have to run a 4-2 or at least a creative 3-3 to have a chance to control the line of scrimmage. They have not controlled the LOS each of the last two weeks. Just like against Minnesota last year, and I fear Minnesota again this year. Leonhard has to do something different.
  10. No talent gap. They beat Purdue 24-6 at Purdue today. They have talent.
  11. I think that's more of a function of ticket prices/cost of going to a game than anything. Prices now are at the tipping point where you must put a good product on the field, or it isn't worth going. While Packers fans can be a little annoying, the fact that Green Bay still has a team - and a flourishing one - is a testament to the fans, and they deserve a little bit of a superiority complex for that. While the economics of the NFL and being community-owned help a lot, in how many other communities that size would a team be able to survive? How many other communities would have taken $100M in the late 80s from some prospective owner to buy that franchise and move it? How many other communities that size would invest in the stadium and stadium area like they have? 60 years ago, Saint Louis was one of the 10 largest and most flourishing cities in America. It was the first non-European city to host the Olympics. IMO, you can't compare Saint Louis to Green Bay in any way other than that both are about the same distance from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans respectively.
  12. He also used to work on Wall Street. Arrogance and tone-deafness run rampant there.
  13. Eh, I don't know about that. You don't see anyone in the Packers organization chastising players or coaches on other teams for their conduct or, in their opinion, not doing things "the Packer Way". The Lambeau Leap can be a little obnoxious, but it's all in good fun and you know it's coming (unlike a Molina bat flip). The Cardinals always figure out a way to pull a Clydesdale's horseshoe out of their butt. The Packers (Fail Mary, 4th and 27, Jerry Rice's fumble, etc.) seem to do the exact opposite.
  14. Wisconsin was the bottom of the barrel in the late 80's and early 90's. Doesn't matter where you were, it matters where you are now.
  15. "Embarrassed" is what happened to Ohio State last year, losing by 29 at Purdue, a team that went 6-7 (and, ironically, lost to Eastern Michigan). "Embarrassed" is also what happened to Ohio State the year before, losing by 31 at Iowa, a team that went 8-5 (3-5 in conference). In neither year did Ohio State play in the CFP playoffs, but: 1) they didn't lose another game either of those years B) they played in a "New Year's Six" bowl game each of those years 3) they look primed to be in the CFP this year Losing to Illinois by no means is a death sentence to UW, nor does it cut the Badgers out of a New Year's Six bowl. And losing to a middling Big Ten team can happen to anybody. Just ask Ohio State fans. If you watched the 2nd half of the Illinois-Michigan game the week before, you saw them come back from a 28-0 deficit to score 25 unanswered and could have beaten Michigan if it were not for two fourth quarter fumbles. They figured something out last week, and gained a lot of confidence that they brought against UW.
  16. The jet sweep was there all day, but only ran it twice, both times for big gains. No hippo package at the goal line. Not going with what got you there is questionable. Don't out-think yourself taking Taylor out in the 4th quarter. If nothing else, he's the best decoy in the game. Missed a pretty obvious holding call on the big run at the end of the game. Sanborn was clearly held.
  17. I think Jordan is the greatest athlete of any sport. I think Gretzky could give him a run but that is the only player I can think of who maybe as good or better than Jordan. In the NFL I don't see anyone who can challenge those two same with MLB maybe Ted Williams if he didn't go to war twice. I think Bo Jackson - an all-star in baseball and football - deserves to be in that conversation. Jordan was much more successful, but I'd put Jackson as the better athlete. Deion Sanders belongs in the conversation as well - perhaps the best DB/KR of all time and good enough to be a competent MLB player. FWIW, while Jordan was a decent baseball player, I don't know if he ever makes the majors (on merit), much less the MLB All Star game.
  18. I'll second, great post. I'll add that even before his outrage, I found Booger to be pretty bad. He doesn't seem to know football as well as an announcer should. The play by play guy also seemed very mediocre but not as noticable. So yeah ESPN should probably find better talent. I've literally never seen an announcer that should be unbiased react in such a way. It's one thing if Bill Schroeder calls out an umpire, it's quite another to have this happen on a national broadcast. Booger also was a DT so he is naturally going to side with the DL and not the OL. If it had been a Packers DL being called I think he would have said the same thing.
  19. One of the reasons they overpaid was because of timing - it was in-season. Melvin used to say that pitchers are worth more in-season and hitters are worth more in the off-season. The fragility of arms, compared to bats, tends to lead to greater demand in late July, thus inflating the return. And in late July teams know exactly what they have and whether they are legitimate contenders, further inflating demand. Managers are paid to win games, GMs are paid to win championships. Theo was hired for one job - to end a 100-year-old streak. He did exactly that, and paid a price for it. If you look at what that championship has meant to the Cubs revenue - ticket demand and prices have skyrocketed, the area around Wrigley has been built up with a hotel, restaurants, park, condos/apartments, etc. - I don't think the Cubs owners have regretted what he gave up one bit.
  20. Speaking of the Dodgers, now that they got bum rushed from the playoffs again, if they go spend big in free agency will they have the luxury of affording Chris Taylor on the bench? Taylor is eligible for arby this offseason and made $3.5M; he'll be due a raise. The Dodgers have a lot of $ coming off the books, but they also have Lux knocking on the door and may go with Lux or Beaty as the 2B for salary cap purposes. Taylor may be too pricey to keep on the bench with Turner and Seager ahead of him.
  21. You're absolutely correct - that we aren't arguing with. What we are arguing with is that starting Kotsay in CF that day cost them the game. In our opinion, it did not.
  22. Exactly. Kotsay didn't give up the single to Furcal, or throw the wild pitch that got Furcal to 2nd. If Furcal is on 1st, he doesn't score on the play and Gallardo has a chance to get out of the inning without giving up a run. Kotsay didn't give up the ground rule double to Pujols. Kotsay didn't walk Holliday or Berkman, who both came around to score on separate plays well after the play involving Kotsay. And Kotsay didn't give up the double to Freese. If Gallardo does his job, at most two runs score, and the Brewers win 3-2.
  23. I'm still amazed at how many people forget that Kotsay hit a home run that day and walked in 2 of his other 3 plate appearances. He had the highest offensive Win Probability Added of any position player on either team that day. My event for the book is the day they traded Gorman Thomas.
  24. Does almond milk or cashew milk freeze at a higher temperature than other liquids? I have a section in the door of my refrigerator where I keep the almond/cashew milk, and occasionally it freezes (or gets ice chunks in it). But it is usually right next to a gallon of green tea, which never freezes. They're both almost all water; the almond/cashew milk has a little more substance to it, a little thicker, so you think it would freeze at a lower temperature.
