  1. Suppan and Gagne are the only truly foolish contracts. There are others that are somewhat questionable or just didn't work out but those are the only ones that were just awful on paper.
  2. Eovaldi made his debut in 2011. This move was almost certainly sparked by the Marlins announcing that they wanted to get rid of Hanley more than anything. He is such a club house distraction that they were tired of him and just wanted to dump him. This was more about the Marlins and less about the Dodgers.
  3. I think it is probably time to call up some younger arms and just get them some experience. None of these current guys should be back next year so why not see what we might have in the future.
  4. Neither of those guys is a significant upgrade over Lombardozzi so I doubt it.
  5. The rotation has a 3.19 ERA, a 3.35 FIP and a 3.61 xFIP. Seems they're pitching right around where they should be. In the same way the 2005 White Sox rotation pitched where it should be. Almost everyone in the rotation having a career year at the same time. I don't think that rotation is honestly a 3.19 ERA rotation. 3.61 ERA I could buy though.
  6. I can't agree with this at all. The rest of the rotation is coming back to reality and the offense is pretty much average at best. I still don't expect them to make the playoffs to be honest. There is no good answer with Strasburg. He has horrible mechanics, has already had TJ once and never got to build up his arm strength properly. Sticking him in the bullpen could hurt him, putting him on the DL and asking him to start it back up in a couple months could hurt him, pitching too many innings could hurt him. They should probably just shut him down completely if they plan on limiting his arm at all.
  7. I think we should be sellers but I just don't see it as realistic if we win 2 out of 3 in this series. If we are still one good winning streak away from the playoffs I just don't see ownership selling at that point. The Dodgers are scuffling, I'm not buying the Pirates at all. The Cardinals aren't playing all that great as of late. Votto is hurt. The Mets have tanked. If you assume the Braves are going to get one wild card it is perfectly reasonable to think that we only have to beat out 2 of the 3 teams ahead of us in the division to make a playoff game. I just don't see them selling with those conditions.
  8. Think of it this way. Ignoring defense for now since it is hard to factor in. Votto doesn't pitch so right off the bat he isn't affecting 50% of the game. He is only up 1 times out of 9 so again he isn't affecting 89% of the hitting half of the game. So his impact on any single game at best is 11% of 50% or 5.5%. He is an above average defensive player so maybe call that 6% to try to add his defense back in. A player who can only impact 6% of the game can turn a .500 team into a serious playoff contender. Seems about right to me.
  9. I think the season is probably dead so it might just make more sense to hope he can fix himself at this point. It is kind of a tough call. It isn't like we have other arms clamoring to try out to be the closer.
  10. Lets be clear here, the Pirates are a complete non factor. Almost every player on their team has played way over their heads and they are still just hanging around 2nd place. The Cardinals and the Reds are the only teams that matter and yeah they have a pretty big lead on us so unless we go on a run really soon we can't expect to pass them.
  11. The advantage goes to New York for winning the division and getting to face one of these teams without them having their #1 pitcher for game 1. The wild card is great and all but I firmly believe the division winners should have an advantage and that isn't the case right now other than 1 more home game. This wild card playin game completely changes the dynamic of the playoffs and I think it is great.
  12. Actually it is one of the best moves they have made to the playoffs. It adds more optimism for more teams and more importantly it makes the wild card teams burn their best starting pitcher in the play in game thus giving an advantage back to teams who win their division. There is pretty much nothing but positives from this. Also the concept of the regular season deciding which team is better is pretty silly when they play unbalanced schedules. A wild card team in the AL east is a much better team than a wild card team coming out of the AL Central assuming the same number of wins.
  13. Considering the 2nd wild card probably will require 5 or 6 fewer wins than the division, yeah it is more likely.
  14. I would like to sign him but I don't see it as very likely. I still think it is a little too early to trade. The Pirates will be a non factor by the end of the season, almost everyone on their team is playing over their heads and they are still in 2nd place at this point. Passing the Reds and Cardinals is a very tall order though.
  15. The only what if with Sheets is what if he hadn't gotten hurt at the end of his last season with us. We don't have to push Sabathia so much, Gallardo comes back and we head into the playoffs with Gallardo, Sabathia and Sheets. That was a potential world series team that was completely derailed by the injury. The fact we didn't get good picks for Sheets or Sabathia has hurt the team long term as well and is part of why we have this gap that we have right now in minor league talent as the high end picks would be just reaching the majors now.
  16. This is how bullpens work, they are almost always completely erratic year to year even if the pitchers stay the same.
  17. It was certainly a frustrating stretch because they played well enough to gain 3 games on 1st over the past 2 weeks but they blew way too many winnable games so tread water.
  18. They probably realized that 80% of high school arms flame out before they succeed in the majors.
  19. 0% pretty much. If he produced like he did 5 years ago for an extended period then maybe but he has been almost below average for a number of years now. A bunch of clueless fans don't realize the stats have slipped but anyone with a brain can identify it.
  20. I wouldn't really begin to even think about selling until after the all star break and wouldn't be serious about it until July 23rd. If we are a significant number of games back on July 23rd they need to seriously consider it. We have a really easy schedule the rest of the way up until the all star break and then we face the Cardinals and Reds right after it so we'll have a really good idea of where things stand at that point. That is also 8 days from the trade deadline so they can start thinking of deals and discussing them if it looks ugly and then those two series can make the decision final.
  21. He is a catcher, I'd just assume he took a ball off his hand at some point and didn't notice it right away. There doesn't need to be some big conspiracy theory about it.
  22. Yeah there were plenty of great hitters back then. If you want to make that argument I would focus on how many horrible hitters played every day back then. The replacement level has gone way up over the years for hitters.
  23. If your argument hinges on Tim Dillard it is flawed to begin with, lets be real here.
  24. Yeah there were plenty of pitchers on steroids and there is no good way to know how much it helped one vs the other. It is a big unknown quantity for all of the players. There were still pitchers that thrived in the era and I think since it followed an expansion and there has been ample evidence that the balls were different that there is more to this offensive spike than just steroids.
  25. Yes because the jsonline is a bastion of truth, have you read any of their stuff? Mench was not a key part of that trade, it was never suggest that he was by anyone on the team and he wasn't slotted for full time play even right after the trade. This is the Jsonline making stuff up at random like they always do.
