  1. Let's say they sign Tex, Burnett, and Lowe in addition to CC. That means they'll have 5 starting pitchers - CC, Wang, Burnett, Lowe and Joba - under team control for many, many years. In addition, they'll have catcher, first base, second base, third base, and shortstop under control for just as long too. In the outfield, they have Nady and Swisher under team control for a couple of years as well with a CF prospect coming up about a year from now. By making all of these signings in one year, all they lose is draft picks from THIS year. They could basically sit out free agency for a couple of years barring trades and injuries.
  2. Ibanez hit lefties well this year with a .305/.371/.497 line, but in every other year of his career he has struggled against them. Including a .650 OPS in 2007 and a .663 OPS in 2006. In 2004 and 2005, he had a respectable .780 and .769 OPS respectively. Meanwhile Burrell has posted at an OPS of at least .820 since 2004 against righties and crushed lefties every year.
  3. Per Rosenthall... Link This is a curious move as the Phils were looking for a righty to go along with Howard and Utley. Why they didn't stick with Burrell is a little strange. Burrell is: Much younger Has better on-base and slugging skills Hits more HRs Doesn't cost draft picks Ibanez is a lefty, but Burrell's splits are absolutely adequate to play every day (.854 OPS vs. righties the last 3 yrs; compared to Ibanez's .735 OPS vs. lefties over the same period). Ibanez actually hit lefties better than righties this year, but in every other year in his career he hasn't hit them well at all. Neither is very good in the field, right? How much is Burrell expected to make?
  4. For whatever reason, Cabrera's numbers over the last 3 years are far better when he leads off. It's only 254 ABs over the last 3 years, but he's put up a .291/.372/409 line leading off over this time. I assumed he'd be hitting in the 7 hole, but ya never know
  5. Yikes. This might be a depressing off season. From being a possible landing spot for CC, to avoiding the free agency pool altogether in a matter of hours. Maybe Melvin isn't just using GM-speak when he says our holes will be filled via trades.
  6. Youk's price tag would be pretty high, I assume. A healthy Lowell would be tempting, but I think he has 3 years left on his deal. And if that is the case, he probably doesn't match up well with the Brewers plans at third.
  7. Well, wouldn't the O's be better off trading those players individually? Each of them could probably net 3 prospects each. Instead, your proposal gets them 1 prospect (and his star has fallen a bit) and 3 big leaguers that haven't proved to be much more than league average. I'm sorry, but the only team that benefits in this deal is the Brewers.
  8. Yeah, I'd be interested. He is a Boras client, I believe, and I'd bet he gets at least a 4 year deal. Now that CC and Lowe are (probably) off the table, I prefer Perez to any other free agent pitcher other than Sheets.
  9. I'm still holding out hope that Sheets signs with the Brewers. With Yanks getting CC and Lowe (at least it looks that way), they might not be in on Sheets anymore. With Lowe getting over $15 million per, I'd say a 2 year deal around $28-30 million could entice Ben to stay, assuming those bridges haven't be burned. Sheets could be a real steal. He could out perform Lowe and Burnett and cost a fraction of what they're getting. Of course, we all know what else could happen. But there is some element of risk taken with every player and if we could get Sheets on a 2 year deal we'd have to jump at it in my opinion.
  10. Turning down the Yanks so "soon" was probably done in hopes of increasing the number of teams to bid on CC. Now all a west coast team has to do is match Milwaukee's offer and CC would probably take it. And if two west coast teams start bidding perhaps the money will get driven up near the Yanks original offer.
  11. With K-Rod likely only costing around $12 million a year for 3 years, I think I'd rather sign Wood for 2 years and around $20 million than trade for a closer at this point.
  12. If this is true (assuming pitching prospects would be included to the Royals), it could mean that Hart is headed to Atlanta to replace Francouer in RF. And I agree with Fondy...If it would only take Hart to get Greinke, the CC contract talks wouldn't hold that up. CC, Yo, Greinke, Parra, Soup/Bush is one sick rotation by the way
  13. This sounds like bull to me. There would have to be some high pitching prospects going with Frenchy to the Royals for this to be even. Do the Royals even need an OFer?
  14. I'm not sure about that. Aren't the Dodgers very close to signing Blake, allowing them to play Dewitt at 2nd?
  15. according to Heyman, the opt-out could be after 2 years allowing CC to be a FA when he's just 30 years old. 2 years down the road the economy should be in better shape (one can only hope, right?) and the market for CC might be better. Interesting to see us push hard at least... http://www.fannation.com/...s-still-in-running-for-cc
  16. He might do it. There is an obvious window right now for the Crew to be contenders and CC knows we have the talent to win NOW, whereas the Giants seemingly won't for a few years (offensively anyway). An opt-out only hurts us if CC gets seriously injured or somehow becomes ineffective.
  17. I'd like Beltre, too. I would think he'd at least hit .275 with 25+ HRs. Maybe we can pry Putz away in the same deal? What role does Hall play on this team if we acquire a full time third baseman. Super utility guy again? Or do we trade him for salary relief and not much more?
  18. Must be a perception thing for him because these are his numbers at Miller over the last 3 years... .329/.490/.700 for a 1.190 OPS - 7 HRs in 70 ABs
  19. Yeah, I'll admit that I'm not a big Bush fan, but I also know that not every pitcher in a team's rotation can be elite. I was just curious to see what his value might be. As a previous poster mentioned: "Bush has more value as a Brewer than as trade bait right now."
  20. Bush is coming off his best year since coming to Milwaukee. I think its time we cash in on that. I know we're trying to add at least 1 SP to the rotation and trading Bush alone wouldn't net us a whole lot, but packaging him with one of our sluggers in exchange for a top of the rotation pitcher might be the way to go. If Fielder were to be traded to say, the Angels (if they miss out on Tex and sign CC, theoretically), we could package Prince and Bush for Santana and maybe Figgins (but its hard to say if that's fair, a prospect would likely be needed at our expense). Then we could take a shot on a guy like Dunn to play 1st. And maybe we get lucky and get Sheets back on a 1-2 year deal. Figgins Hardy Dunn Braun Hart Weeks Cameron Kendall Sheets, Gallardo, Santana, Parra, Soup I have no idea what this does to our payroll, but it sure looks nice http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I think sometimes the Brewers are afraid to sell high on some of their players. Hindsight is always 20/20, but I'm sure DM and company would love to have traded Bill Hall after 2006. Thoughts on trading Bush?
  21. I'm not getting my hopes up. CC wants 3 things as I see it: 1. To be close to home (west coast) 2. To play in the NL 3. The most money and years he can get while obtaining the top 2 We can only offer 1 of those things. While the Yanks will no doubt have the highest bid, the Dodgers/Giants/Angels bids will be plenty high for CC to take one of those. I would put money on CC landing in LA as a Dodger
  22. I wasn't all that impressed with Corey in the field last year either. Maybe its those long legs, but he looked a little lackadaisical out there at times - a little awkward even. I'm not against trying Braun out there, but I think he needs at least another year in Left before the team seriously considers it. Braun was pretty cautious out there (in my view anyway) last year. Maybe another year in the OF will get him more comfortable trying to make those tougher plays.
  23. I tend to agree, but what can we expect in return? He'd have to be packaged with some other prospects (probably pitching prospects) to net anyone resembling a top of the rotation-type of guy, right? There just aren't many examples I can think of where a single prospect is traded for young pitching (though I'm sure there are some). Delmon Young for Matt Garza is the closest thing I can think of off the top of my head. And both of those players had at least proved they were ML caliber.
  24. This was the most enjoyable episode for me this year. Andy and Oscar were great!
  25. "If the Yankees are starting at a number somewhere between $137-$150 million a year for 6 years, you can pretty much forget about the Brewers having a chance. " I think most have already moved on. But how sweet it would've been... I can't help but say that I'll respect CC more if he turns his nose up at the Yanks and gives one of the Cali teams a ~$20 million discount. How sweet would it be for the Yanks to miss out on CC AND Tex and have to really fight it out for 3rd place with the Jays again this year?
