  1. Aren't the new pitchers like Davies and Jungmann groundball pitchers anyways? So less stress would be put on the OFs.
  2. Agree. I think Lind will be traded in the offseason and one of Santana or Braun will be moved to first. Santana seems like he should be a decent OF, but that big frame would be a nice target at 1B. Leave Davis in LF where is bad defense does the least harm, and let some warm body fill in at CF until Phillips is ready. Since he is going to knock Santana out of CF anyhow, I would rather have the good player (Braun or Santana) make the position change in the offseason rather than mid-season. You would be wasting Santana's plus arm by moving him to 1B. Braun should be the one moving, and if he can't/won't then just trade Davis already. We can also keep Santana in CF for a year, it's just a rebuild season anyways. If Santana doesn't have any background of infield work, I really don't see him moving to 1B. But, I don't assume that everyone can get the art of snagging bad throws in the dirt. You could try him if he is willing, but I wouldn't want to set back his hitting because he feels bad because his defense is dragging him down.
  3. Well we are solidly in 7th place now, but it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to see 2 of Boston (3 back), Detroit (3), Seattle (4.5), White Sox (4.5) fall apart and the Brewers end up picking 9th.
  4. So anyone want to venture how much Peralta, Smith and Segura will make in their first year of arby? Those are the only ones, right?
  5. Even if part of the salary is deferred, you still have to pay it - so his salary is $7.5M. If you want to mess around with time value of money, then call it $7.4M in current dollars. And a $2M buyout for the following year if he falls apart in 2016. So potentially $9.5M was the cost to keep KRod when someone wanted him now. The problem with this logic is that it can be applied to multiple players on the team. Braun, Lucroy, and Lind all come to mind. I don't think any of us would want to see any of them traded must for the proverbial "bag of balls". I'm not saying I don't want to see them traded...just that I wouldn't give them away just to clear salary. I feel the same way about K-Rod. But to me KRod is much closer to not playing up to his contract as soon as next year. I can see him hitting a cliff at any point in time and having negative value. Hence I would have moved him in July for best deal on table. Or another way to put it, if KRod was a free agent today, would you sign him to a $7.5M contract for next year? I guess I wouldn't, as I am punting next year anyways. The only good thing about having KRod next year is that Jeffress (or whoever ends up closing) will not be accumulating closer stats now and he will be cheaper in the arby years. I have much more confidence that the other three players, Braun, Lucroy, and Lind, barring injury, will play to a minimum to their contract cost next year.
  6. Even if part of the salary is deferred, you still have to pay it - so his salary is $7.5M. If you want to mess around with time value of money, then call it $7.4M in current dollars. Not saying I would have just let him go for nothing on a August waiver wire deal, but I really think Melvin did us a disservice when he didn't trade him in July for whoever put up the best deal.
  7. Brewers better get Lohse back in the rotation. Sitting 4/5th but Atlanta is only a game back and Oakland is only a game and a half back. Boston and Oakland are 4 games back. So we still could screw this up and end up picking 9 (or later).
  8. I think most of us are talking about trading prospects for prospects. I would gladly trade a SS or OF for a comparable 1B/3B or C.
  9. Nelson is absolutely emerging as a legit ace. I live out of market, and trust me, the ex-players in the booths for other teams talk about him in those terms. I think he was referring to no ace in the minor league system. As for Nelson, still a long way to call him an ace. Even if he finishes like the last couple of months, he would need to show it in 2016 for that type of title.
  10. It's nice to have a good catcher, but it seems to me that the position uses up a player, whereas you get a good 1B/3B, it is a good chance he is going to play more and be healthier. So I guess I would rather have a Maldanado at catcher and have an outstanding 1B, rather than have a 2014 Lucroy at catcher and a Reynolds/Overbay at 1B. You are more apt to lose time at the catcher position. So if I had to prioritize a trade I would look for a premium corner infielder before a premium catcher. But would rather have a premium catcher before a "good" corner infielder prospect.
  11. Name them. I'm sure the Yankees have some AAAA pitcher that can put up the same 5.0 ERA (assuming some improvement from Garza) that Garza will put up for the rest of this season, and for minimum wage to boot. I can see a team taking Garza in the offseason, gambling on some kind of comeback to norms, but not a team this season that is in a pennant chase.
  12. Exactly, don't dicker around getting a used bag of balls, just say your amen.
  13. I think Zimmerman would give them a hometown discount (definition?), but it isn't really the right timing. They should take 2016 and hammer down the rotation (and 1B and 3B), looking towards fighting for a playoff spot in 2017. I think we can count on Peralta and Nelson, but after that I think you need to spend 2016 to figure out who the other three starters will be in 2017. The more young and cheap starters we can count on in 2017, the more we can spend money to acquire a free agent to fill whatever positional holes we have. If the Brewers somehow unload Garza and don't have to eat a lot of his contract - I can see the Brewers going after Zimmerman.
  14. If players haven't signed off on the rights to their HIPAA, then teams could never disclose that a player went on the Disabled List or what his injury was. Because that right there would violate HIPAA. So I assume the players have all signed off on their rights for the teams to disclose their health and it really isn't "private" information anymore. Edit- I see Patrick had already mentioned this.
  15. If the Brewers were realistically competing next year, it would take more to trade him to the Cardinals. But I think 2017 should be the target and if the Cardinals offer a little bit more than the next team, I would take their offer.
  16. No, wheel spinning strategy is retaining them and shooting for .500. Parra should be an automatic trade, regardless if Gomez is traded. Who cares if Schafer and Davis/Peterson get all of the starts for the rest of the year. I would also trade Lind and play Rogers now, but can see keeping him as the Brewers shouldn't be signing any high-priced free agents this offseason. In my mind, the goal isn't to get to .500 now or next year, the goal should be to shoot for the playoffs in 2017, and I don't see them as part of that picture. And if the front office loves Parra, they can always sign him in the offseason after receiving a prospect this season.
  17. Nahhh the Yankees can complain just as easily that Peralta has bone spurs, and we can send them Bob Wickman back. I hear he is really getting that River Valley HS program going.
  18. How does that improve your situation? Well if one team has a surplus of one position and a deficit at another and the other team has the opposite position - it seems obvious that both teams can help themselves in a trade. But, I understand why GMs don't trade minor leaguers for minor leaguers more than likely to save face on losing out on the trade. I would love it if the Brewers could find a comparable AAA 3B in value to Sardinas/Rivera and try to swap. The Brewers have surplus SS they need a 3B. Even if that 3B's unmet ceiling is just major league average, and he won't get there in 2016, at least you have some hope for some competence at the positon, and are only paying min.wage to find out.
  19. You would have to make that Lohse plus $4.5M (of the $5.5M owed) plus Cotts for a B prospect.
  20. I don't see the Pirates doing anything at this point with the thought in mind that at least it would hurt the Cardinals. Right now they are too far behind to make trades with that being a factor. If St. Louis has a 5 game losing streak or something, maybe you can start thinking that way, but right now the trade has to be 100% because it will help the Pirates, not well the trade is not ideal, but it will keep the Cardinals from them, so lets do it.
  21. The Brewers are not going to compete in 2016, so they shouldn't be spending anymore than they have to. I would say there is about a 96% chance that he would take the QO the second it is offered. The only reason not to isn't because of money, it would be because he doesn't want to play on a loser or doesn't like Milwaukee. And even then, he would have to wait until June, because nobody is going to give up their 1st round pick for him.
  22. Which is why I don't understand why we have a team there...Seems like a horrible idea to put young guys in that situation. I hope we are gone from CS after that 2 year lease is up, just seems stupid. The Brewers didn't really have a choice. After Nashville hung them out to dry Colorado Springs and some other place were the only spots left. Was there even another spot available? I thought we were the team that got caught without a chair when the music stopped.
  23. Well if you can save $2M by seeing if Lohse gets a few more decent starts under his belt, that is nothing to sneeze at (for the Brewers). Plus it isn't like they want to push the innings count on Jungmann anyways, so a few weeks in the pen/Colorado won't hurt.
  24. I could see the Brewers throwing in enough to get a trade done. I don't see them throwing in enough to get a decent prospect back. As long as we have enough minor league arms with enough innings left on them to get us through this year, one of Lohse/Garza has to go, but I don't think I want both to go unless everyone is healthy.
  25. My guess would be that there would be at least one deep pocket team every year that would try to corner the market and try to get the three best pitchers, etc. Total spending on the top 30 players would probably at least double, after that spending would probably be the same.
