  1. according to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times. Kapler, 34, hit .239/.329/.439 in 238 plate appearances while playing all three outfield positions (primarily right field). Kapler originally signed with the Rays for $1MM back in January. The Rays seemingly got their money's worth, as Kapler's strong defense led FanGraphs to value him at $5.2MM this year. One can only imagine what he is worth to fangraphs if he'd have hit .268 over 550 plate appearances in right field. (edited to show that Gabe signed again, not that he resigned from his position - hawing)
  2. I know Braun loves Lake Geneva and hangs out there frequently. Probably has an awesome pad there but I am not certain of that.
  3. Plus Seattle gave up enough to get him to where he probably is not even really available.
  4. I'd rather wait on Cain until he's ready to play full-time. In fact, I guess that's my philosophy for any positon player (with the exception of the catcher position where I believe more days off are fine given the stress on the knees so I'd be fine with Salome splitting time). And don't even get me going on how much I hate platooning in the first place. If you are doing those at more than one position, you are probably lacking a bit of positional talent on your team.
  5. I'd risk Salome and Rivera. I have a feeling it would pay off. Also, Gerut will not be making half of Cam's salary next season. It will be much less than half Cam's salary.
  6. That is a pretty simple off-season plan TBWS and is actually about all we need to do. My only problem is that Morrow is probably at worst 50 50 to cut it in the rotation. I tend to think he will, but we need more than just he and Hudson added to our rotation. At least something like Mulder as well.
  7. Maybe not to the extent of calling him "horrible", Mass Hass, but it is disturbing in the past year how many people completely overlook Salome, have Lucroy unquestionably as the one that will be our future catcher, want him included in trades this off-season, etc. So, again, horrible might be a bad word to use but a decent-sized contingent here at BF sure doesn't have a ton of respect for Salome with regard to wearing a Milwaukee uniform anytime in the near future.
  8. Ouch! I certainly don't want to give Cameron anything approaching 20 million over two years. I will gladly go with Gerut if it's anything more than one year and 6-7 million.
  9. Two things Nate... 1) I don't think he has "horrible defense". Maybe below average, but I look at Dave Nilsson as horrible. That is a little embellishing imho. 2) If you really see Salome as having a bat ready to play some at the DH positon on an AL team, well then I guess I just see it as pretty foolish to give up on that type of a bat before he's been given a chance to show he is worse for our team than the likes of Moeller/Bennett/Kendall/Rivera.
  10. Maybe JackZ will be a little higher on Salome than many around here are. I could see him making the Mariners this coming season if he's dealt for in a Morrow-Hardy deal.
  11. Sveumrules - there are many of us that think Rivera could have easily at least platooned with Kendall his age 31 and age 32 seasons. Nobody is saying he needs to catch 95% of the games. But as a split-starter with a guy like Salome, I don't think that's a horrible combo. As far as trading Salome....I question if we'd really get any value. What team has a worse catching situation than us going into next season? And he's not good enough to help us out? If I were a gm of another team, I'd simply ask "why is he not in your plans at all and your catching situation is so bleak next year". Then I would give a big time low ball offer for Angel.
  12. I can't see us doing a trade with Seattle in which JackZ doesn't want it expanded to include a farm guy or two. So, yes I do agree Yoshi that any deal with them might be expanded to get us at least another pitcher as well.
  13. I don't know what that foursome would yield in a trade. Parra has yet to show he deserves to be in any MLB rotation yet, Gamel had a poor second half and still might not be able to stick at third base, Salome is pretty much seen as an afterthought by quite a few around these parts due to his lack of defensive skills, and Hardy had a really bad season. This is just the pessimist part of me. Realistically, need to shed more positive light on all of these. Still, there are enough warts here to probably keep us from getting an ace. Maybe one year of Halladay, but I am not sure.
  14. True Yoshi. I just think sometimes these things have a strange way of working themselves out. Really though I am just advocating offering him arby unconditionally. I don't think he'd accept it either. There is a good chance that we deal at least one other infielder besides Hardy. If Lopez accepted arby, I could see Weeks peddled as well. There is a decent chance that Lawrie is ready to take over in 2011 anyway, so it's possible that this is the last year we'd need Weeks/Lopez anyway.
  15. If you are saying that Lopez will more than likely approach his career norm numbers next season, shouldn't the same be expected for Counsell?
  16. Isn't it more likely that Hart is retained and Cameron allowed to walk since he's a free agent, thus we should be looking at platoon partner's for Gerut in CF? Considering that hart would cost half of Cameron and is under contract (and trying to avoid an is Cameron worth it or not thread again) I think we should be searching for platoon-mates for Jody in CF.
  17. You could say the same thing about Prince Fielder offensively when he was up to DH when Overbay was on the team though. Melvin's quote was probably something like "he will be a great offensive player in the future but isn't yet because he hasn't proven it at this level". I don't think we'll lose anything defensively when Escobar takes over next year. We very well might gain a bit, just as we did when we replaced a solid, good player in Lyle Overbay.
  18. Good point Invader. But I am unsure either way. I am sure their fans will tell you that he won't be dumped just to clear salary if you asked them on a message board. But maybe they'd take some type of cheaper talent along with Suppan and Riske. The combined savings along with whatever talent we give them (say Todd Coffey since they could use the backend bullpen help) might make it a deal they'd jump at.
  19. Again though, beyond numbers, you can look use the eye test, which I personally prefer. I am not advocating that as the right answer over all stats. But Escobar has far more range, a quicker release, and I believe a better arm. Definitely more tools to be better in 2010, though I am not sure he'll end up being the better defensive SS in 2010.
  20. Too bad we don't still have Bill Hall to give them in that deal Joe. Hall and Suppan for Lowe still saves them about half of his contract and maybe more importantly clean books after 2010. With Hall gone though, Riske might be the only other "dump" that we'd have. Everyone else is pretty reasonable unless I am forgetting someone.
  21. Precisely my thoughts And That. If there is unexpectedly a horrible trade market for our chips and we need to rely on free agency to get our two new starters, I'd hate to only land one and have Cam back as opposed to upgrading two spots in the rotation and going with a lesser expense in CF. ETA - I don't have the stats in front of me, but I believe Gerut had a nice year at the plate as recently as 2008.
  22. Rotoworld has him arby-eligible this off-season and then a free agent next off-season.
  23. I think he is more important to the Brewers than most people think, especially defensively. He automatically makes our pitching staff better. I don't know about this. If true, it sure didn't impact a horrid rotation this year, as evidenced both by the numbers and by our eyes watching our team give up so many runs. Even if this is true, it might be just like when Tampa Bay had the best pass blocking LT in the game in Paul Gruber. Yeah, he's a great pass blocker, but with a horrible surrounding cast, they are not going to score points anyway. Yet, if Tampa Bay gets a better and more talented cast around them, they will be better and be able to score even without the best LT in the game. Just sayin that 8-10 million for next year is a HUGE decision that needs to be well thought out. We need to get the pitching or know that we will get the pitching before we spend that money on Cameron.
  24. 1) Welcome to the board 2) Correia sure did have some good numbers all around last year. Don't expect much support on the board for him though. Many see him as yet another "another Suppan", which he could well be. That said, he'd have been a great addition mid-season last year but probably is not a goal-type signing any of us should have. 3) I think we do have enough to get Lackey. I am not sure he is worth the numbers most think he'll get, but I have no doubt we can beat the offer he ends up taking.
  25. Could be Nate. Not sure yet if it's fair to say Macha will only play the more experienced player though over any talented rookie. Rivera sure didn't play much with only a below average Kendall in his way. There's a chance Macha simply doesn't think Rivera is that good and that he can't handle more than half the games. I do agree that Doug and Ken need to get on the same page before Angel is given a roster spot, as it sure would be dumb to have him sitting on the bench five days a week.
