  1. Step One: Draft WR Round One Step Two: Win SB Step Three: Internet Explodes Sounds alright to me.
  2. If Brady won 7 SBs with the Ravens and put up Trent Dilfer-like numbers, no one would think the wins matter. But Brady was obviously a huge key to so many of their wins and had neck-and-neck stats with his peers. Here are how the Ravens defenses ranked in terms of points allowed during Brady's career... 4, 19, 6, 6, 10, 1, 22, 3, 3, 3, 3, 12, 12, 6, 24, 9, 6, 2, 3, 2, 19 (AVG DEF 8.33) Brady's defenses (AVG DEF 7.05) were actually slightly better than the Ravens defenses during his career. Three of Tom's SBs came paired with the #1 or 2 defense. The other four were ranked 6, 7 or 8. The worst defense he ever played with ranked 17th in points allowed, so he essentially went his whole career without a below average defense playing the other half of his games. The two times he lead the league in passer rating (2007, 2010) the Pats lost the Super Bowl. I'm not saying Brady is a Dilfer level game manager that got lucky, he's clearly much better than that. I'm just saying "he won the most so he's the GOAT" is leaving out a lot of relevant information.
  3. Yeah, really fun game tonight with the playoff atmosphere. Even if we get Brook back in some capacity before the playoffs, Philly will definitely be a tough out. East is going to be a bloodbath. Really isn't an easy match up out there. MIA/TOR always play us tough, CLE has Allen/Mobley to slow down Giannis, BOS is the hottest team in the league right now, PHI has Embiid/Harden, BRK will be a threat as long as they have Durant, obviously bad blood with CHI after Grayson's foul on Caruso.
  4. Exactly. I feel like the GOAT conversation is a little more relevant in basketball where someone like Jordan or LeBron or Kareem or Russell or Wilt can impact the game on both ends of the court. A QB certainly exerts the most influence over the results of a football game, but that impact is much closer to a starting pitcher in baseball than it is to an NBA superstar. I mean Cy Young has the most wins, losses, games started, complete games and innings pitched in baseball history, plus an award named after him, does that make him the GOAT pitcher? I don't know, but my vote is for Satchel Paige. People can say Starr is the Packers GOAT QB because he has the most rings, but I'd say that is taking a very narrow focus & not really considering the full historical context. From 1961 to 1967 the Packers defense ranked 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 1, 3 in points allowed. Holmgren & McCarthy were pretty good or maybe even great coaches for a spell, but they were no Lombardi. Favre/Rodgers had Reggie, LeRoy & Woodson in 30 years for defensive HOFs. Starr had Adderley, Davis, Jordan, Nitschke & Wood in 7 years for defensive HOFs. Starr played in a league with half as many teams over 50 years ago.
  5. GOAT is a subjective measurement, there is no objective criteria. It can always be argued, that's the whole point. Here is a listing of how the defenses for Brady & some other recent All Time Great QBs stacked up in terms of points allowed ranking on a seasonal basis, with SB winning seasons bolded... Brady (AVG DEF 7.05) 6, 17, 1, 2, 17, 2, 4, 5, 8, 15, 9, 10, 8, 10, 1, 5, 7, 1, 8, 5 Rodgers (AVG DEF 16.46) 22, 7, 2, 19, 11, 24, 13, 12, 21, 26, 22, 9, 13, 13 Manning (AVG DEF 14.59) 29, 17, 15, 31, 7, 20, 19, 2, 23, 1, 7, 8, 23, 4, 22, 16, 4 Brees (AVG DEF 18.37) 22, 31, 11, 13, 13, 25, 26, 20, 7, 13, 31, 4, 28, 32, 31, 10, 14, 13, 5 Favre (AVG DEF 12.16) 15, 9, 5, 4, 1, 5, 11, 20, 14, 5, 12, 11, 23, 19, 25, 6, 18, 10, 18 Montana / Young (AVG DEF 5.67) 2, 23, 4, 1, 2, 3, 3, 8, 3, 2, 4, 3, 16, 6, 2, 4, 3, 13 Maybe Brady & Montana had some special sauce that set them apart from other ATG QBs, or maybe they consistently were paired with much better defenses. Again, I come down more on the side of the latter than the former, though I would never discount either entirely.
  6. Brady definitely has won the most Super Bowls of any QB. But does that mean he was the GOAT or does it mean he was a really good QB who got to spend most of his career with one of the best HCs of all time? For me personally its more of the latter than the former.
  7. I highly reccomend this summation MLBTR did of each side's current positions on key issues... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/02/latest-collective-bargaining-positions-for-mlb-players-association.html Of course in any dispute between two parties both share in the blame, but that doesn't mean its a 50/50 split. Between the owners initiating the lockout & their refusal to make any real effort to get younger players more money earlier in their careers (15 million to be split among 30 pre-Arby's employees is a joke), plus their seeming disinterest in doing anything to increase competitive balance, equals (for me at least) the owners shouldering a larger share of blame than the players in this particular labor dispute.
  8. Soto has a chance to shatter contract records given the start he's had to his career at such a young age. Signing for 350 million could be leaving over 100 million dollars on the table. Even if you already have 350 million, 100 million is still a lot of money. Juan's plate discipline stats are better than Ted Williams (or anyone else) through the same age, which is pretty insane. Here's how Soto stacks up against some of the other all time great starts to a career through age 22 with all the stats adjusted for era... Soto: 206 BB%+ | 80 K%+ | 119 AVG+ | 132 OBP+ | 129 SLG+ | 156 wRC+ Teddy: 180 BB%+ | 92 K%+ | 127 AVG+ | 134 OBP+ | 153 SLG+ | 177 wRC+ Musial: 118 BB%+ | 44 K%+ | 131 AVG+ | 125 OBP+ | 149 SLG+ | 170 wRC+ Trout: 154 BB%+ | 115 K%+ | 120 AVG+ | 124 OBP+ | 136 SLG+ | 165 wRC+ Foxx: 160 BB%+ | 151 K%+ | 116 AVG+ | 121 OBP+ | 142 SLG+ | 160 wRC+ Pujols: 114 BB%+ | 71 K%+ | 120 AVG+ | 117 OBP+ | 136 SLG+ | 154 wRC+ Eddie: 154 BB%+ | 139 K%+ | 103 AVG+ | 112 OBP+ | 135 SLG+ | 150 wRC+ Mel Ott: 170 BB%+ | 99 K%+ | 108 AVG+ | 117 OBP+ | 129 SLG+ | 147 wRC+ DiMaggio: 63 BB%+ | 75 K%+ | 114 AVG+ | 104 OBP+ | 143 SLG+ | 144 wRC+
  9. Yikes what? Yikes that Soto is cognizant of his market value & didn't want to settle for less than his actual worth within the economic structure of MLB? Juan is slated for 16-17 million in Arby's this year with two more trips after that before free agency. That's like 70 million right there, which would essentially mean he is signing a 10/280 deal as a 26 year old free agent when he could be in line for a contract in the neighborhood of 400 million by going year to year. Boras knows what he is doing.
  10. Giannis with the casual 50 piece on 17-21 from the field & 14-18 from the line. One more game Thursday vs Embiid & the 76ers before the (much needed) All Star break. Last road game was 2/10 so they've been back in MKE since 2/11. Next road game isn't until 3/4 @ Chicago (pretty short trip), then they've got Phoenix at Fiserv on 3/6 before heading out to OKC on 3/8. That is essentially a month at home with no real travel. Pretty nuts.
  11. Even with admittedly not performing up to expectations in the postseason during the Rodgers era, they still have the 2nd most postseason wins over that time frame. QB Postseason Records Since 2008... Brady: 23-10 (35-12 career) Rodgers: 11-10 Russ Wilson: 9-7 Brees: 8-7 (9-9 career) Big Ben: 8-8 (13-10 career) Peyton: 7-6 (14-13 career) Favre was 13-11 in the playoffs, Young was 8-6, Elway was 7-7 before Terrell Davis showed up, Marino was 8-10. Outside of Brady & Montana (16-7) even the best QBs of the last 30 years or so are all right around .500 for the postseason, which I believe backs up the idea that increased level of competition & randomness are a contributing factor. I'd love it if AR12 (& the rest of the team) had capitalized on one of those other chances to make them definitively the 2nd best franchise of the last 14 years instead of just arguably the 2nd best franchise of the last 14 years, but hopefully that'll just make it all the sweeter when they pull it off next year. I mean hey...they're due!!
  12. Injury is part of the equation, sure, but the primary things are that (1) there has already been a DH in one league for 50 years now so the band aid has been pulled off for some time & (2) pitchers are increasingly bad at hitting as they get increasingly good at pitching. Fifty years before the DH, in 1922, pitchers hit 198/238/253 (24 wRC+) with a 19.9 K%. In 1972, the year before the DH, pitchers hit 146/185/184 (6 wRC+) with a 33.0 K%. Last year they hit 108/147/137 (-22 wRC+) with a 44.8 K%.
  13. I'm not concerned about another grown man exercising his free will. Stearns has more than earned the right to do whatever he wants with his career. Whoever the next POBO is will either be better, worse or about the same & we won't even really have an idea about which way the arrow is pointing until they've been on the job a couple two tree years. I'll wait until then to maybe consider worrying about it or not.
  14. Meadows could be interesting depending on the price, not sure I'd go as high as Quero or Hedbert though if that's what it takes. Over the last three seasons with TB he has started 110 games at DH and 182 games in LF/RF with a -6 DRS. So probably not a complete butcher, but not someone you want in the OF everyday either if you are trying to prevent runs in the grass.
  15. They could expand the playoffs & still maintain the integrity of the regular season if they do it right. If you wanted to increase from the current ten teams to say a twelve team field, that is six teams per league. Top two division winners get a bye. Third division winner picks which Wild Card they play & only have to win one game to advance where the WC needs to win two games to advance. Other two WCs just play the standard win & yr in, loser go home game like we have now. Could even go out to fourteen teams & do the same as above, but with only the #1 seed in each league getting the first round bye. Sixteen teams just seems like too many. Maybe save that for if they ever expand again.
  16. For whatever reason they aren't the same team during the playoffs as they are during the regular season. Most of the reason is because the level of competition is much more evenly matched in the playoffs than during the regular season. The randomness of a playoff game is exponentially higher than the randomness of 16/17 regular season games. Outside of Brady/NE no other QB or franchise has multiple SB wins during the 14 seasons that Rodgers has been QB. Could the Packers have convincingly been the 2nd best team of the last 14 years instead of just arguably the 2nd best team of the last 14 years? Sure. But either way, whatever disappointments fans might have felt (or stopped feeling altogether over the years) have been bourne out of a level of success which was only clearly bettered by one franchise.
  17. Two INTs, a missed XP plus a free TD & Cincy still might lose this game.
  18. Packers & Titans & Bucs & Chiefs & Bills & ... Has the NFL achieved parity or parody?
  19. They keep showing LeBron & I was trying to figure out if he was rooting for the Rams since he plays in LA or the Bengals since he is from OH, but then I remembered he is a Cowboys fan because of course he is.
  20. I mean if all scoring plays have to be reviewed anyway, a penalty that obvious being missed should be able to negate the TD. Maybe it'll lead to some kind of rule change or the ability to challenge PI calls/non-calls.
  21. Just completely blatant & nothing. Then Stafford strikes again. EL OH EL.
  22. There's the Stafford interception. See if Cincy can capitalize.
  23. I believe Young does get kind of overlooked. Big time. His eight season stretch as a starter is the most dominant run in NFL history from an efficiency standpoint. Lead the league in RATE+ six of those seasons with still impressive 120 & 128 marks in the other two seasons. Plus he is probably the best scrambler out of the QBs that come up in the best ever conversation. My tiers are probably something like.. Young/Rodgers (efficiency masters) Montana/Brady (if rings are more your thing) Peyton/Favre/Brees/Marino (not as efficient as tier 1 / not as many rings as tier 2)
  24. Sharpe & Adams career numbers are close, but once you adjust for the era they played in Sterling has the edge for me. In 1992 when Sterling lead the league with 108 receptions, the league as a whole completed 7,705 passes. This year there were 12,121 passes completed. A couple more All Pro caliber seasons would probably put Davante over the top for me, hopefully we get to see them in the Green & Gold.
  25. The level of competition & number of teams is drastically different than it was over 50 years ago. The opportunities Starr had were much easier opportunities than either of Favre or Rodgers had. How many teams have more than two Super Bowl wins over the last 30 years?
