  1. Looks like that changed with the new playoff format... "With, however, the adoption of a second wildcard berth and a wildcard game beginning in the 2012 season, the non-division winner with the best record in the league faces possible elimination on the first day of the postseason. As a result, the tie-breaking rules were changed so that two teams tied for a division championship must play a tie- breaking game even if both teams have already qualified for the postseason."
  2. I feel like if the Brewers score runs today it will greatly increase their chances of winning.
  3. I'll maintain my pre-trade deadline stance into the offseason. Mets have had a good second half & have some interesting young pieces, but this year they've gotten 675 innings of 3.00 ERA work from deGrom, Thor, Wheeler & Matz and they're still in 4th place. I'll take the under on that inning total & the over on that ERA mark for the same quartet next year if the Mets stand pat.
  4. You might be giving the writers too much credit. Cain still leads Yelich by 0.5 WAR according to baseball reference. Old school writers might give Lorenzo more credit than Christian because he is a certified veteran leader with World Series credentials. I wouldn't be surprised at all if a Cain ends up higher than Yelich on a couple two tree ballots.
  5. Yes. That would require a tiebreaker for the NL West, then a tiebreaker between the loser & STL for the 2nd WC who would then play whoever ended up as 1st WC between us & Chicago.
  6. Coming into tonight Piña had an 11 point OPS+ edge on Kratz. In 430 innings with Kratz behind the dish our pitchers have a 3.47 ERA compared to 4.03 in 715 innings with Piña catching. Chacin is a big driver behind this, 3.25 ERA in 102 innings with Kratz compared to a 4.39 ERA in 65 innings with Piña. Miley has also pitched almost exclusively to Kratz since he came back from the DL. If our best pitchers want to throw to Kratz (& what has happened seems to indicate they do) that is AOK with me.
  7. For whatever it is or isn't worth Braun has been the 5th "unluckiest" batter this year per StatCast. They have him with an expected average of .299 & an expected slugging of .530 based on the quality of his batted balls. That would be good for about a 135 wRC+.
  8. This post made me curious obviously. Zoilo Versailles won the AL MVP in 1965 with a .273/.319/.462 slash line. Yuck and a half. Marty Marion won the NL award in 1944 with a .267/324/362 slash line. He must have been a HECK of a defender..... Nice digging, RoCo. Also, digging the Billy Jo Robidoux avatar.
  9. For AAA ballparks I've been to Albuquerque & Louisville (both very nice), Sacramento (meh) and Colorado Springs (underwhelming). Is SA even worse than CS?
  10. Piña has caught 20 of 29 Chase starts this season, including each of the last nine. The MannyDerson battery is 12-8 so far.
  11. Baez currently has a .328 OBP. Pretty sure that would tie Andre Dawson for the lowest OBP ever by an MVP were Javy to win. The electorate has evolved a lot since 1987. I hope.
  12. I'd guess their current BOARD rankings may change slightly between now & when the actual team lists comes out after the season, but for now it looks like they are still pretty high on Grisham/Feliciano (#6/#7 vs #18/#21 here) & are maybe not quite jumping on The Zack Brown Bandwagon just yet (#12, 3rd pitcher behind Lemons/Houser vs #6 here & #1 pitcher left on the board).
  13. This article is a couple weeks old now, but does offer some insight on what Christian Yelich has changed... https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-christian-yelich-has-changed/
  14. JP Morosi on MLB Network just now... "Christian Yelich right now is the NL MVP front runner."
  15. Thanks again to whoever keeps bumping these older threads. Greatest Hits (for the cycle)... Well, that's the problem. He's not a special player. Terrible deal. This will end up being reason #1 why everyone will want Stearns gone in a couple years. Just awful. Too much, hate this deal. Really hate it. Ugh
  16. And Baez hits third most of the time doesn't he? He probably should have more RBIs Per the RBI% tool at baseball musings Baez has had 413 runners on, 6th most. Scooter & Khris are 4th & 5th! Javy has driven in 103 for a 17.43 RBI%. Yelich was at 89 RBI with 351 runners on (46th most) for an RBI% of 16.81 before tonight. If you set it from 2001 to present, minimum 2500 runners on Braun is 5th in RBI% at 17.88. The four ahead of him are Miguel Cabrera, Garrett Anderson, Magglio Ordoñez & Josh Hamilton with Manny Ramirez, Vlad Guerrero, Ryan Howard, David Ortiz & Aramis Ramirez rounding out the top ten.
  17. 17-8 in the last 25 is the best in NL per BA & Rock. How much credit does CC deserve for that stretch?
  18. Kratz has caught the last nine Miley starts. Use this information as you so please.
  19. How does Cleveland only have 83 wins playing in that division? They should seriously let the Rays or Mariners have their spot in the postseason if they end up with a better record, both currently 1 win back. How about this to make things more fair? Say we end up with NY/OAK & LA/MIL as the wild cards. The Yankees can only roster 80 million worth of players to match OAK's payroll & the Dodgers can only roster 107 million worth of players to match ours?
  20. I am not shocked that Bill Michaels is shocked. Reasons to not be surprised... 1. There is always a lot of purple at Lambeau for Vikings game. (Oh wait, he's saying it's somehow MORE) 2. Vikings just won the division. 3. Rodgers health questionable/diminished. 4. It is an early season game before everything is frozen. What would shock me at this point is if Michaels had a reasonable take on something.
  21. Day off after the regular season. Five days to cover three games plus an off day in the middle of the series & another off day after its over. The one seed division winner has now had six days off to accumulate rust while the team they will be playing has stayed sharp playing in & winning meaningful games. Almost sounds like a DISadvantage to me. Also, how do you set up the three game series? Does the better WC play the first two games at home then have to win on the road in game three? Doesn't seem fair the lesser WC should host the deciding game.
  22. Please use this thread to discuss other games with playoff implications: Washington @ Atlanta 12:35PM Arizona @ Houston 1:10PM Cincinnati @ Chicago 1:20PM Colorado @ San Francisco 3:05PM Los Angeles @ St. Louis 7:05PM
  23. Exactly. If you want true equity you need to balance the schedule & eliminate divisions (not to mention level the financial playing field). The only way to accomplish any of that is by adding/subtracting teams and/or regular season games. Since we know none of that is going to happen anytime soon, any ensuing system will be unfair to some team depending on how any given season plays out. And I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Such is baseball, such is life.
  24. If you check back through the recent lineups it looks like Kratz is catching Jhoulys, Miley & Davies with Piña getting Gio & Chase. For whatever it is or isn't worth Chacin has a 3.24 ERA in 17 starts with Kratz behind the dish compared to a 4.39 ERA in 12 starts with Piña back there.
