  1. Under the current setup there is potential for 2 WC games, 20 DS games, 14 CS games & 7 WS games for 43 games total. Contract two teams. Eliminate the leagues. Each team plays each of the other 27 teams 6 times (3 home/3 road) each for 162 regular season games. The two best teams then play a best of 43 series so we have a large enough sample to determine The One True Champion. I'm not even sure if I'm serious or joking at this point.
  2. Rockies walk off DBacks.
  3. If a guy with a 95 career OPS+ outhits a guy with a 98 career OPS+ over the course of 100-150 plate appearances, no one is to blame. That is just baseball happening.
  4. There is an old idea that every team is going to win 54 games & every team is going to lose 54 games no matter what, so it's what happens in the other 54 games that decides your season. I thought I would try to apply this idea to the Brewers season so far to see how much it lines up. I came up with 37 Wins consisting of 11 shutouts pitched plus 26 games where we won by 4 or more runs. I then came up with 38 Losses consisting of 21 games we scored 1 or less runs plus 17 games where we lost by 4 or more runs. That leaves a record of 46-25 in the "up for grab" games decided by three or less runs.
  5. When I was a kid I remember being told that Freeway got his nickname because he was hit by a bus at one point & settled with the city for free entry to all Milwaukee sporting events & festivals, thus getting a "free way" in for life. Pretty sure that is an Urbn Lgnd though.
  6. Odell Jones in 1988 maybe? Went 7 perfect before giving up a walk in the 8th & a single in the 9th.
  7. They should do a bobblehead of Freeway dancing in the bleachers to honor the man, the myth, the legend. 1,000 of the bobbles could be limited edition shirtless alternates.
  8. Would love it if Lopez is able to find his command in KC & go on to have a nice career, he's certainly always had the stuff. KC got kinda trashed for taking two MLB ready guys in Phillips & Lopez, but I think they clearly got the best return of our deadline deals. Unfortunately the opportunity wasn't here for either guy. Just couldn't take the lumps with Maverick's contact issues & Jorge's command issues in the middle of a playoff chase considering the other options available.
  9. Former Brewer Dennis Sarfate has put up some pretty impressive numbers in Japan. Lead the league in saves three straight seasons from 2015-17 & was named MVP with a record 54 saves in 2017. Looks like he recently signed an extension covering the 2019-21 seasons though, so he's probably in NPB for good at this point.
  10. Pretty sure he posted here on occasion in the past. If I'm not misremembering his username was something to do with Rickey Henderson.
  11. I honestly knew nothing about Pettine until I just interneted him. Looks like he had some good to decent defenses circa 2009-13 (which is kinda awhile ago at this point) & has done nothing or maybe even somehow less than that since. What was the sell on this guy when he was hired?
  12. I'd argue the 2nd set isn't quite as clear. Set one I'd go B, C, A...seems relatively obvious. Set two is less obvious, but I personally like C, A, B. For me B is a distant 3rd. A has more K's and slightly better whip than C...but significantly more runs allowed. Depending on what stats matter more, C and A are up for debate and generally pretty close. Agree with you that this year's crop is a lot closer. For me C takes it over A because ultimately I value the 14 less runs over the the 30 extra strikeouts, 5 extra innings & slightly lower rate of baserunners.
  13. Let's remove WAR from the equation. How would you rank these 3 starting pitchers who received votes for the 2004 NL Cy Young award? A: 214 IP 218 K 79 BB 71 ER 169 H B: 245 IP 290 K 44 BB 71 ER 177 H C: 237 IP 264 K 32 BB 71 ER 201 H I won't reveal my order, but there is a pretty clear one, two & three to me from looking at those numbers. How would you rank these three pitchers currently in contention for the 2018 NL Cy Young award? A: 193 IP 260 K 46 BB 49 ER 124 H B: 181 IP 188 K 49 BB 45 ER 128 H C: 188 IP 230 K 42 BB 35 ER 139 H Again, seems like a pretty clear one, two & three there in terms of who has pitched the best.
  14. The plot thickens... http://milwaukeerecord.com/sports/want-to-see-a-photo-of-cole-hamels-wearing-a-brewers-hat/
  15. Everybody out here playing checkers while Craig is playing six dimensional multiple realities chess.
  16. A large number of posts on this website represent conclusions drawn from a few games, or in many cases even less than that. Why stop now?
  17. Anderson has over 700 career innings now with a FIP that is 9% worse than league average, but an ERA that is 6% better league average. Of the 52 pitchers with at least 700 innings from 2014 until now, Anderson's ERA/FIP differential of -0.59 is the largest. If you narrow it down to just his time with the Brewers he has a FIP 9% worse than league average, but an ERA that is 12% better than league average. His ERA/FIP differential of -0.95 is the largest of 67 pitchers with at least 400 innings from 2016 until now. Some of that can be attributed to defense, but our defense has really only been elite this year out of the last three. FIP is a great tool but certain pitchers are demonstrated FIP busters over the course of their careers & it would appear that Chase is certainly one.
  18. Every time is important to win. No one goes 162-0, though. Yes, I am fine with CC making lineups in the playoffs & World Series if he manages the team to get there. Yes, same for the bullpen. Yes, right now he is the guy. Yes, I would imagine the coaches (& front office ) have input on how CC manages the bullpen. I would guess that coaches say numerous things to CC throughout the game & he gives those things said varying amounts of consideration.
  19. Shaw the third baseman at second to Schoop the second baseman at shortstop to start the double play. If only Braun the left fielder had been at first to complete the rare everybody out of position double play.
  20. How many of those 100,000+ are going to want to pony up the necessary cash when they finally do get called? The only reason the phone will be ringing in the first place is because whoever had the tickets before was be fed up with lousy play on the field and/or the hassle they had to go through to witness said lousy play. Throw in the fact that the NFL arrow has been pointing down for some time now & they seem completely oblivious to it. Would love to know the breakdown of fan sentiment after Rodgers injury last year. It seems like the three main camps were (a) good, they'll finally be as bad as I've been saying they were for all these years (b) my Sundays just opened up and © wait? This is what football is like without an elite QB? This is really boring. How did the NFL ever get so popular in the first place if most of the games are like this?
  21. Interesting article on FanGraphs today about how a more aggressive approach early in the count has fueled Christian's recent hot stretch. I wonder if Yelich decided to do this all on his own or if perhaps it was suggested to him by Darnell Coles? https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-christian-yelich-has-changed/
  22. Lots of interesting races this year. AL MVP: Gotta be Mookie at this point. Best player on the best team. Though Ramirez & Trout aren't far behind. Top 8 on the FanGraphs WAR leaderboard are mostly AL guys. NL MVP: I'd agree with reilly that Carpenter is probably in the driver's seat at the moment. If voting were today I'd guess Yelich gets more votes than Cain. You've also got Goldy, Freeman, Baez & Arenado all in within fractions of WAR from each other. NL ROY: To start the season it looked like Acuña's to lose, the he got hurt & Soto burst on the scene with a historic season for a teenager only for Acuña to come storming back. And that's to say nothing of current WAR leader Harrison Bader, though he gets most of his value from defense which tends to not play as well in award voting.
