  1. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade here but I just fail to see how we get anything useful for any of these guys. We gave up next to nothing for KRod and he is a year older and worse. Same story with Nyjer. Wolf is a 4/5 starter for any team that is hoping to make the postseason. Kottaras and Gomez are useful role players at best. I just don't see any way that a contending team values any of these players enough to give up anyone with even a modicum of upside.
  2. When Suppan was making 12.75 million a year that represented about 15-16% of total team payroll. With payroll creeping towards and possibly set to exceed 100 million, the 11 million due Weeks in coming years will represent a lower overall percentage. Potential albatross, sure. But Suppanesque, no way. Plus everyone knew Soup was cooked (simmered? boiled? I'm no cook.) while there is still some hope for Rickie to regress (progress?) to his established mean. Also, as Rluz did a great job illustrating offensive production overall in MLB has been in a free fall while free agent prices continue to rise. There's very little positive you can say about Rickie right now (Hey there's like 30 qualified batters who make outs at a more frequent pace, like Ichiro Suzuki to name one!) but I'd say our team giving up the 3rd most runs in the NL is more problematic than a struggling second baseman on a team that has still managed to score runs at a league average rate.
  3. Small sample size yadda yadda yadda Mike Trout is batting like .420 in AAA.
  4. If organizations truly valued a manager's contribution and thought they had a sizable impact on the outcome of individual games they would pay them more than back up infielders and middle relievers. Outside of Maddon (who quite likely owes much of his success to the organization which employs him) I can't think of many managers I would rather have than RR just because almost all of them are exactly the same. If you watched all 162 games of any other team you would think their manager is terrible too because odds are he is making most of the same calls as RR does in the same situations. Everyone was excited about Macha at first because he had the "Moneyball" background and was going to be willing to think outside the box. We all saw how that turned out, the team clearly didn't play for him. As much as I disagree with RR's decisions a lot of times it does seem like the players still like him and are willing to play hard for him and this day and age of baseball I think that is all you can really ask for.
  5. Whether you're using UZR, DRS or EYES Escobar is worth this deal for his glove alone.
  6. I know I'm just another dude dreaming on the internet at this point but if Rogers and Braddock both are healthy and pitch to their potential this year they could give a real nice boost to the bullpen.
  7. Really curious about this also. I haven't done a ton of digging (googlying?) but I so hope that there is a four or five way tie for divisions/wildcards as karma for MLB pushing this through for no other reason than what RockCo said a couple posts back, massive cash grab. Seriously, just wait one year.
  8. Bill James has Gamel projected at 342/476, that seems about right to me. Looking at the slashes for first baseman last year I think if healthy Mat can produce somewhere in that Gaby Sanchez/Carlos Pena range and if he really puts it together could maybe see somehting similar to Mike Morse's line with a little less SLG. Hoefully the Brewers are serious about giving him a shot and he stays healthy and takes full advantage.
  9. His response definitely makes it seem like they're gonna let Jungmann roll with what has worked for him up to this point mechanically. Definitely should be a fun year of following the link reports.
  10. Bruce Seid is interviewed as part of David Laurila's excellent Q & A series. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/qa-bruce-seid-scouting-the-brewers-draft/
  11. How Strasburg does is definitely what I'm looking most forward to about the 2012 season. With Harper and Rendon they could be pretty scary in a hurry.
  12. The two provided essentially equal value last year. fWAR had Pineda 0.7 higher and bWAR had Marcum 0.5 higher.
  13. Pineda incresed his value just as much over the course of the 2011 season as Lawrie did, though. Both had questions coming into the season which they both answered and then some. As for not making the playoffs with Pineda versus Marcum, their production was pretty close to identical. Pineda had slightly less innings but was slightly more effective in the innings he threw. And as TooLive pointed out, they both tired towards the end of the season so that's a wash. My preference all along would have been to (one) not trade Lawrie since he was the last impact bat we had on the farm, (two) trade him for a pitcher with comparable talent/service time, (three) what happened. Don't get me wrong, last year was a blast all the way around but I think it could have all still happened with Pineda in place of Marcum and we'd be better off for the future.
  14. With reports today that Jack Z approached Toronto about Lawrie before going after Montero it would only seem to increase the likelihood that we could have gotten Pineda instead of Marcum for Lawrie last offseason. Would be really curious to know how much, if at all, Doug explored that avenue.
  15. Just saw Theriot signed with the Giants today and while he's really no great shakes it makes me think about our backup middle IF and between Rickie's injury history and Gonzalez's oldness it sure would be nice if we could pull something better than Cesar Izturis there.
  16. Should be really interesting to see how they do things in 2013 when Martinez comes back. Miggy 3B, Prince 1B, VMart DH?
  17. Nippon Ham Fighters, 2 years 51.6 million.
  18. With Seattle's attendance situation they really couldn't afford to trade King Felix. The only players people go to see in Seattle are Ichiro and the King and after Ichiro's 2011 if they traded Hernandez what is left of the fanbase would erode even further.
  19. Offer him 5/130. He gets a million more a year than Ryan Howard and still gets to hit FA young enough for one more big deal with an AL team to DH.
  20. Where is all the outrage that Clayton Kershaw only got paid 500k last year? Players in MLB are over and underpaid to varying degrees, that is just the nature of the CBA. Manny Parra is hardly the worst offender here and if he pitches in relief as well as he did last time he got sent to the bullpen the contract could be a pretty nice bargain even.
  21. Maybe Braun's physician?
  22. Correct. While the metric itself is slightly problematic it's only compounded by people who misuse it or don't take the time to understand its limitations.
  23. Defensive stats and evaluation have made enormous leaps and bounds in the last ten or so years but they are still nowhere near as reliable and concrete as offensive numbers. If WAR has two players close and one gets all his value from offense and the other gets all his from position and defense I'll take the guy who creates most of his value with his bat because you know EXACTLY how much that is worth. The defensive inputs are nice and I'm sure people work really hard to make them as accurate as possible but they are nowhere near as empirical as offenisve metrics and their creators will generally admit as much.
  24. The defensive component alone has so much room for error that I can't consider the end result a mathematical fact in the truest sense of the word. If all of your inputs have varying levels of reliability your end result cannot be considered absolute.
  25. The AL & NL have different run environments due to the DH so adjusting at least somewhat for league would seem to make some sense. At the same time my favorite thing about these numbers is they really are just guidelines. It is a fact that Ryan Braun batted .332 last year, it is an opinion that he was worth 7.8 wins above a replacement player.
