  1. I would guess coming off TJ he'll sign a one year, incentive laden deal with the Cards to rebuild value and hit FA again in 2013 looking for that big multi year deal. If Ben Sheets got 10 million from the A's last year I'd think Wainwright could get at least that on a one year deal.
  2. Looks like McCalvy blogged some details on Kotsay's incentives... Here's the breakdown: Kotsay's base salary if for $800K, and he can earn up to $450K in incentives. He'll earn $25K each if he reaches 125 and 150 plate appearances, $50K each for 175 and 200 PAs, $50K each for 40, 60, 80 and 100 games started, and $100K if he's on the roster on July 1. Let's hope for our sake none of those are met.
  3. I also would add that while the Mainstream Media would like to have us all believe the reason the NFL is so popular is because of the parity, and while I won't deny it plays a role, I'd wager the two most important factors in the NFL's popularity are the short schedule as logan pointed out above (16 sundays in the winter requires far less commitment from a casual fan then every single summer night) and the fact that the game has never been faster, stronger or more violent than its current incarnation. Also if you institute a maximum player salary it will just lead to owners pocketing even more money than they already do and if anyone is gonna get ultra-mega-insanely rich off of this game I'd prefer it to be the players before the owners.
  4. Look at World Series participants and Super Bowl participants the last 10 years. 14 out of 30 (46.7%) of MLB teams have made an appearance as have 14 of 32 (43.8%) of NFL teams. One reason there is more parity in the NFL is that 12 out of 32 teams make the playoffs (37.5%) vs. 8 out of 30 (26.7%) in MLB. Also for every KC or PIT in MLB there is a DET or CAR in the NFL that has equally slim chances at the beginning of the year of winning the big shiny trophy.
  5. If he has a typical CC year I'm sure some team will be more than happy to give him 5/125 if he opts out.
  6. And how did the Hall contract work out? I guess my point is if Rickie is already looking for Uggla/Utley money how much can his price really go up regardless of what he does or doesn't do this year? If you're not going to get any real discount why not wait so you at least have another year of data before throwing four or five years at ten to twelve million at a guy.
  7. If the Rangers are fine letting Hamilton (who plays an up the middle position like Weeks and has an extensive injury history like Weeks but has also has far more upside than Weeks) hit FA I see no reason why the Brewers should throw Uggla/Utley money at Rickie on the back of one healthy productive season. It sucks that things worked out this way but there's really no reason for Weeks to sign a fair extension when he is a year away from FA and there's no reason for the Brewers to may open market rates right now with Rickie's injury history. I believe it is referred to popularly as a Catch 22.
  8. No official link yet but the 2011 bobblehead schedule is posted at RealGM. If these are indeed correct YO has gotta feel majorly jobbed. 1. John Axford - April 24th 2. Casey McGehee - May 22nd 3. Zack Greinke - June 12th 4. Hot Dog - July 10th 5. Craig Counsell - August 14th 6. Randy Wolf - September 25th
  9. Or Weeks' side botched it by asking for Uggla money which Rickie doesn't deserve with his injury history. Point being with the paucity of information that we have available to us it's really impossible to tell which side deserves which percentage of the blame for botching things.
  10. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=6065119 Wow. Only in Florida.
  11. Geddy, take a walk around Milwaukee (or anywhere in Wisco for that matter) and tell me what percentage of the population you think is eating "good" or "healthy" food here. Also, aren't Rocky Mountain Oysters testicles? Sounds like something Cubs fans might be more interested in!!!!
  12. Looks like Lawrie and Odorizzi checked in at #28 and #37 respectively on MLB.com's top 50 prospect list.
  13. If the Poutine with Cheese Curds pulls off the victory I may end up Fatter Than Joey.
  14. Can't believe Punto hasn't landed a deal yet. He can field and get on base, the two things Yuni can't do at all. Platoon him and Counsell and you instantly have the grittiest/scrappiest platoon of all time.
  15. I'm not a twitterer but the few tweeters I've read from Adam Jones on the Orioles were certainly classics of the genre.
  16. To add a little bit to what Funk wrote above, Garza's extreme flyball tendencies should mitigate some of the theoretical AL to NL ERA gain he would benefit from as he is moving from the Trop which suppresses home runs slightly to Wrigley which does quite the opposite.
  17. The Cubs can develop all the Guyers and Chirinoses they want but what MLB impact talent have they developed recently? Soto, Castro, Marmol is about it. I'll take Weeks, Braun, Fielder and Gallardo over that all day.
  18. While I'm far from a minor league expert (but more than a casual follower) I do think the weakness of our system is overblown slightly. I've been following Sickels top 20 lists as they've been coming out and I think some other serious contenders for worst minor league system would have to be... Boston (All their prospects are overhyped anyway, Ranaudo at #1 has serious upside but also equally serious questions) Chicago AL (Sale looks filthy but is probably a bullpen guy and the list falls off quickly after that) Florida (All glove 3B is their top prospect) Oakland (Really just a boring list. Sure I'd take Green but only because of our huge hole at SS) Houston (Lyles is decent then the comes the cliff) Also agree on Odorizzi being underrated. Look at his numbers and look at Casey Kelly's. Had Boston taken Odorizzi and Kelly fell to the Crew and everything afterward happened exactly the same I wonder how much that might have changed their stock as prospects.
  19. Even though Bagwell's never been "formally" connected the steroids suspicion has always been there for me because of the reasons RockCo mentions above. Look at his minor league power numbers, oh wait there's none to look at. Steve Finley and Luis Gonzalez were also teammates of Cam/Bags who went on to have curious power spikes in their later years, just a little more smoke. People say steroids don't help you hit a baseball, but if you already are a great hitter like Bagwell was they'll certainly help you hit it farther and harder.
  20. I'd like to think that Cappy hates the Cubs but if all things were equal I'm guessing he chose NY because it will help him with his homer happy ways.
  21. Best of luck with the obvious unless "it's against the Brewers" or "as a member of the Cubs" caveats. My girlfriend is more or less destitute at this point. And I'm not just using fancy words because you went to Duke, I always talk like that.
  22. The money was surely nice but I'd gladly bet anyone that the Yankees end up with more playoff appearances and world series titles over the course of CC's contract that the Brewers do. They already have leads of 2-0 and 1-0 of course. It's not like he took the extra 60 million to play for Pittsburgh. The thing that confuses me about Lee is he seems like a pretty smart guy (for a baseball player!) so why would he want so badly to go back to the team that traded him when he didn't really want to be traded in the first place? Between bungling the Lee situation and the Howard extension Amaro's getting to be in Minaya/Moore territory. Luckily he inherited a loaded team and has a lot of resources available to him. I'm pretty sure the main reasons Lee wanted to go back to Philly were Roy, Roy, Cole and no DH, but if I were a top free agent I'd be putting a lot of stock into the GM/organization when making my decision and I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable if I knew Amaro was the one constructing the team around me.
  23. His 2007/8 FIPs were pretty nice with the Mariners. In this market I'll take all three or four scrap heap guys over one "proven veteran reliever" who's gonna want a Hawkins or Riske type deal.
  24. For Trout, Weaver, Aybar and a PTBNL (Cowart)? Sign me up.
  25. If Melvin can pull this off and we still have Odorizzi and one of Jeffress/Rogers left in the system I say go all in. Even if we do have to extend him at 5/100 to get the NTC waived. I'd also have no problem throwing Escobar in if KC is high on him.
