  1. The Brewers are looking to compete in 2018, the Cain signing and Yelich trade are unequivocal proof. Entering the season, the Brewers have three solid starting pitchers, 1. Anderson 2. Chacin, 3. Davis. The final two spots are a complete crap shoot. The Brewers currently have 8 outfielders and first basemen for four spots. (Thames, Aguilar, Braun, Yelich, Cain, Santana, Broxton, Philips). Thats not even counting Choi and Wren. That's a roster mess in my opinion. If we were rebuilding then fine, throw Miley, Gallardo, Suter against the wall and see what sticks. Maintain an outfield surplus and trade if the right deal comes along. However, if your hoping to contend you cant have a glut of good outfielders and a rotation that is one injury or regression from disaster. It makes no sense. In all seriousness, this rotation could blow up in Stearns face in a big way if Anderson or Davies regress, if an iniury occurs, or if the 4-5 spots are a disaster. There is absolutely no margin for error. Bottom line: The outfield glut is not mutually exclusive. A team that is solid all around can afford to have good depth at one position. However, if you have shaky spots it makes no sense to have huge depth at another. We cant play 8 outfielders/1B's at one time. I might physically puke if we maintain this outfield glut and Wade Miley is out there impersonating Tommy Milone.
  2. I think in a perfect world, they'd like to trade Braun. But because that isn't going to happen, they are stuck square-pegging him into right field or 1B. I kind of think they'd love an outfield of Yelich/Cain/Phillips, but unless they find a way to wholesale offload guys, that isn't going to happen anytime soon. It wouldn't surprise me if they were trying to flip Santana, Broxton and Aguilar. They could trade all of them, and still have plenty of depth. Flipping Santana, Broxton, and Aguilar would solve many of the ills. Sadly, Phillips has looked completely lost this spring, so I imagine that might give Stearns some pause. That said, I'm surprised an AL team hasnt made a decent offer for Aguilar.
  3. I agree, I don't think there is no way the brewers sign Cain unless they think they could trade an Outfielder or 2 for a SP. Braun to 1st base isn't happening I think, so they really are in a pickle. I agree with 82brew, Boomer5, and patrickgpe. Something has got to give. Maybe they trade Aguilar, maybe they trade Thames, maybe they trade Santana. Phlliips and Broxton can go to AAA, but I think one of Thames, Aguilar or Santana has to go. Just no roster space for all these guys.
  4. Thames can't run. LIterally. He jogs. If they thought he'd be claimed I think they would be tempted to put him into waivers Yep. With the emerge of Aguilar, plus Braun and Choi, I'm sure the Brewers would love to dump that contract. It was a 3 year 15 million deal. So probably about 10 million left on it.
  5. Suter getting tattoed today by the rangers. 4 runs in two innings.
  6. Provides depth for this season and to begin the next. Allows for flexibility if they do want to move a player. No reason to move him if the deal isn’t right. They'd have to move 2. Santana and Phillips. How long until Stokes is in that mix as well? He's on the wrong side of a numbers game. Unless the offers right... he's not going to fetch much. Like aguilar he's a nice way to fill out depth but his value is nearly non-existant. I saw Stokes this spring. Guy looks small. Doesn't meet the eye test. Also appears to lack power or high OBP. Screams Kyle Wren Part II.
  7. Tom Haudricourt never has any inside info but did send out a Tweet today that makes it sound like he does. @Haudricourt RHP Alex Cobb remains on free agent market but I do not expect #Brewers to be in on him unless price comes down. 11:03 AM - 12 Mar 2018 from Phoenix, AZ
  8. I just talked to a friend who is at the game. Miley looks filthy. This years Jesus Aguilar.
  9. Could've kept/signed anyone with a higher ceiling than Drake.
  10. In all seriousness, what the heck does Drake need to do to get cut? The guy is awful, has always been awful, and is a gigantic waste of 40 man space.
  11. I attended Saturday's game in Tempe. The only two takeaways from that game not discussed here were as follows: 1. Kyle Wren had three at bats and absolutely tattooed three balls. Obviously one game, but I was surprised to see him look so good. 2. Keston Hiura looked awful defensively and over-matched at the plate.
  12. It would be pretty dumb to be doing that on their own and risk injury. Exactly. And there is nothing to replace actually facing big league hitters to see if your stuff is working.
  13. Pretty solid for a split squad. Says a lot about the organization.
  14. They need at minimum 15 days (3 starts). But ideally three weeks.
  15. I'll be at the game in Tempe. Does anyone know who is starting on the mound for the crew?
  16. Having been to Maryvale numerous times, I can tell that the overhaul is very expansive. I have no idea how they plan to get it all done in 10 or so months.
  17. If these guys are junk, I'm curious what your definition of even a decent player is. Maybe you'd consider Kershaw to be decent? Drury is a young, cost controlled 2b/3b that's put up a couple very solid years. Specifically note that he's young, and can still improve. Being young and cheap might help the yankees add elsewhere if they want, or maintain flexibility. Don't underestimate young/cheap with solid production. Banda was a top prospect that had a down year, he's still young and his stuff is still there. Souza I'm less sold on, but he's a cost controlled power bat and a better defender in RF than Santana. He also stole 16 bases last year, so he at the very least has some sneaky speed. I don't know anything about the lower tier prospects, but those 3 pieces all have significant value. Drury has put up 1.4 war in his 2 years. That's solid production? We cut a guy who was doing better at the same age because he didn't progress over the next 2 years. Perez has out produced him over the same span by 1.7 war. When you look at it and think a combo or sogard perez could outperform this guy... cheap doesn't do it for me. He's just stuff. I agree 100% with TJSeven7. I think Hernan Perez sucks, and I believe Perez is better than Drury. So glad the Brewers didnt send Santana to AZ for a package centered on Drury and Banda. P.S. Banda was once a nice prospect. But he was TERRIBLE last year. It was more than a down year. He was really really bad.
  18. To me, this looks like a bunch of junk changing hands. Drury is mediocre, Souza is Chris Carter in the outfield, Solak, bleh. Banda was awful in 2017 and maybe turns into a #4 starter or reliever.
  19. Burnes had a 1.67 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 6.4 H/9, 2.2 BB/9, 8.6 K/9 in 145 2/3 innings last year. Duplantier had a 1.39 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 6.0 H/9, 2.8 BB/9, 10.9 K/9 in 136 innings last year. They are basically the same age (3 months apart) and Duplantier (A/A+) was pitching 1 level behind Burnes (A+/AA). Scouting reports I've read seem to indicate that Duplantier's stuff is more "electric" than Burnes. Duplantier did miss one season at Rice because of a shoulder injury (didn't have surgery) and I'm guessing that plays into the fact that he's probably considered by most to be a 75-100 pitcher on the top 100 prospect list. Note that Baseball America has Duplantier at #73 and Burnes at #74 on their top 100 list. And as far as Pavin Smith, .400+ OBP bats play. And just like in college, Smith ended up with a .401 OBP and a 27 walk/24 strikeout performance in A ball last year. I'd definitely be listening if Arizona offered up both of these players for Santana. I cant disagree more on Pavin Smith. He put up a .400 OBP in A ball with absolutely ZERO power. As he goes up in the ranks the OBP is going to come down and I doubt the power suddenly appears.
  20. Not all of 'em. But a bunch. https://gallery.mailchimp.com/4cc75d19dcfe975d1b3e1916f/files/ccba0ba6-5491-4877-82cb-6e46c4c7f981/2018_Spring_Training_Broadcast_Schedule.02.pdf
  21. I don't like Archer under any realistic circumstances. Whenever I've seen him pitch, it's always felt like it's a matter of time before the offense starts smashing him. I guess advanced stats bear that out, though admittedly I'm not on fangraphs 2 hours a day or whatever. It's tough to give the D-Backs exactly what they need because they're the favorite for the first wild-card already, but I could be tempted by the Corbin + Pavin deal that's been rumored. The only reason is that I think the Brewers are couple years away from passing any of the top 4 teams in the NL anyway, so anything that positions them better for that window is pretty appealing. Competing for the wild card now still wouldn't be out of the question at all, as I think they'd still be better than the Cards, Mets, Rockies, or Giants. As long as they'd still have a chance to steal a wild card game, probably from Arizona, why not clean up the roster and get a perfect fit for your future 1b, an asset the organization lacks at the moment? Agree 100% on Archer. I'm just not a fan. To make matters worse, the d-bags farm system is really really bad, so there is not much to choose from. Their top two prospects are Jon Duplantier and Pavin Smith. Duplantier is barely a top 100 prospect. Smith is a 1st baseman who hit 0 hr's in 195 low A at- bats. I couldn't stand Smith in the draft and I don't want him now. If we're going to acquire roll the dice and acquire Corbin, I'd rather just sign Jeremy Hellickson.
  22. The only reason for the Brewers to not acquire Odorizzi for virtually nothing is because something bigger is coming. I guess worst case scenario you sign Hellickson.
  23. The access to the players is unparalleled. One of these years you should just make it happen, especially after Maryvale is renovated. I went out on Saturday and ending up having a 10 minute chat with a couple relievers.
  24. As others have said. Hiura has not taken an at-bat above the Low-A level. He likely splits time at High A and AA this year. If his stats are ridiculous I think the Brewers could consider him in late 2018. However, in order to keep his clock from starting, May-July of 2019 seems much more likely, assuming he doesn't hit slags at high A or AA.
  25. If the Brewers add Walker I would think that Villar or Sogard get the Scooter Gennett treatment. Trade one to whoever will pay the salary.
