  1. I just pre-ordered The Baseball Prospectus Manual. 40% off at Amazon if you pre-order.
  2. I'm just glad Roberts isn't a shortstop. I'm really surprised they haven't looked to upgrade that position, which is clearly their weakest starting spot. I suppose DeRosa would play short some, but I doubt his defense would be acceptable enough to play him there full time.
  3. I didn't take this post to be another "Sheets is always injured" thread as much as just pointing out a goofy comment by Ned. Not sure if I'm right about that, but "pattern of bad luck" is just a goofy thing to say.
  4. There is definitely merit to the point-forward idea. I coached parks and rec for a couple years (granted 7th and 8th grade so it's a bit different) and sometimes the best point guard happens to be one of the taller players. Although I'd think that when the kids are that young it's not a big deal to put a shorter player at forward and a taller player at guard. Might be worth a shot, at least a few times a game. Isn't that the best? Reminds me of the kids who would never want to shoot in a game and would just pass it right away. We finally got him to shoot and he nails a three. Good stuff.
  5. I understand completely, but I still thought that fact that Johan is the best pitcher in baseball would make up for most of that. Unless everything we were hearing in December was completely bogus, I don't understand at all why Phil Hughes isn't a Twin. Edit: Let me put it this way. If the Brewers had the budget of the Mets, I'd have no problem blowing the Mets' offer out of the water. Gallardo, LaPorta, Parra and Gamel wouldn't have been too steep for me if it got me a 28 year old All-World lefty with no injury history for six years. Yet the Mets didn't even give up their best prospect.
  6. Quite a haul for the Orioles in my opinion. I know Santana and Bedard were in different contractual situations, but I like the return the Orioles got significantly more than what the Twins got for Santana.
  7. Hope you weren't too attached to pre and post game shows though. Dish Network rarely showed them last season.
  8. I agree that this doesn't mean much of anything, though I also enjoyed that quote from Melvin.
  9. As far as Major League was concerned, if the Brewers lost the pennant because Yost had Ryan Braun bunt with Tony Gwynn Jr. on second, only to have Gwynn thrown out at home... Well there'd be an uprising in Milwaukee. How about these: The Ghostbusters never think to cross the streams, and New York City is brutally torn apart by the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Milton never burns down Inotech and Peter goes to prison for embezzlement, and Jennifer Aniston ends up with Lumberg (yes, that Lumberg). Marty McFly is unable to get his parents together in the past and wakes up in the future as Biff's son--only he remembers his old life and is trapped in his new one. Wow, I must be a somber guy with all these dark endings I came up with...
  10. That was garbage. I find it funny that a fantasy baseball writer failed to even mention Corey Hart, who's probably even more valuable "fantasy-wise" than he is in "real life."
  11. Initiate trade talks, eventually trade Vargas and then pass his physical?
  12. Man. Hawaii is my dream vacation. I'd probably even skip the game. Have fun.
  13. Since I root against both teams, I'm disappointed to see Greg Paulus having a good season for a change.
  14. "Hi. This is Ken Griffey Jr. Let's play Major League Baseball." That was my favorite too. Out of the recent games I liked the MVP series the best. I enjoyed the college baseball game they put out and was bummed to hear that they aren't doing one this year.
  15. Not sure if you like/are familiar with Saves the Day. Stay What You Are is a great album. Can buy here.
  16. Man, this is crazy. Kind of strange to see that a couple appear to write for The Carson Daly Show. I mean... I've only seen it once or twice for a musical guest I liked, and it just wasn't funny.
  17. Is there really a lovefest for Kendall? Or are people just glad that Estrada won't be here? I wasn't too happy when they signed Kendall, but I am ok with it just because it meant Estrada is gone.
  18. Gallardy may not be a very big pitcher, but he definitely isn't small like Oswalt or Lincecum. There are indicators that Oswalt may be wearing down somewhat. I don't really see why he'd say that about Gallardo, who has three inches on Oswalt. Just seems like a blind guess.
  19. New album by Straylight Run. The Needles The Space. Looks like you can get it new here for $6 before shipping.
  20. I'll say Pujols in a slight edge over Utley.
  21. Good stuff. Too bad we didn't have more than eight responses.
  22. It's obviously tough to quantify how many wins Yost may have cost the team, but he certainly had a large number of indefensible moves. Mench over Jenkins against Dempster. Letting Aquino face Pence with the game on the line. Losing close games down the stretch without even using your best reliever, including one so awful that it inspired a full-length column at baseball prospectus. Leaving Turnbow in one or two walks too long. Subbing Braun for defense in games that are still close. The Pujols-McClung-La Russa beanball "mine's bigger than yours" disaster. Countless other times where his only defense was him playing a hunch or going with "the flow of the game." That's just way to many inexcusable moves to not lose your job. If 2008 is not his last shot I'll be irate, considering that he shouldn't have even had a shot at his last shot.
  23. I don't get the complaints about Petty's vocals. Hasn't he always had a completely mediocre voice? I thought it was sort of his M.O.
  24. Isn't this called 'pulling a Nantz?' Guess I'm in the minority when it comes to Raftery. I find him pretty obnoxious. What is 'onions' supposed to mean, anyway? I do like Gus though, especially the maniacal laughter.
