  1. I like the idea of him being a multi-inning guy in the bullpen, maybe plan on him pitching a couple innings when Woody starts for the first month or so and then if need be he can throw 2 or 3 games later. If need be it wouldn't be to hard to strectch him out from their. I kind of like having both Hall and Ashby as long men and having Peralta, Woody, Myers, Rae, Civale as the rotation. That way Hall and Ashby both save the pen from being overworked early.
  2. Someone brought up Rhys to the Yankees before, what would you all think about packaging Rhys and Devin? We could take back some salary (not Giancarlo or Lemehieu) and get a prospect or 2. We could then maybe look at a 1st baseman in free agency or a trade. Christian Walker would be nice, I'd have at least some interest in Paul Goldschmidt, maybe Pete Alonso on a Matt Chapman like deal late in the offseason. Yandy Diaz would be a solid trade candidate. I get that adding Rhys takes away from some of Devin's value but if we could upgrade 1st base in the process that would be big. Maybe just Rhys to NYY would like Rhys and Peguero get us like Nestor Cortez and a mid-tier prospect make some sense?
  3. How do minor league free agent contracts for players with no major league experience and not likely to make the 40 man work? If we want Ernesto back do we offer like a signing bonus and then he makes a regular minor league salary or would he agree to just like a overall higher salary.
  4. I think so, we probably should trade 3 or 4 relievers just so we aren't losing guys for nothing when it comes to it. In my opinion, Wilson, Hoby, and Devin should be traded and then maybe one of Peguero or Payamps. If we lose Devin we have Megill, Hudson, Koenig, maybe Ashby, Hall, Peguero, Payamps, Mears, Yoho, Uribe, and others as late inning potential arms. We likely will also claim a vet or two as reclamation projects. There are going to be multiple big market teams in need of a closer and a weak market in terms of high end relief options, I think we should find it easy to start a bidding war for Devin. Not only would a trade give us likely 3 nice pieces in return but it would give us a little wiggle room to add a free agent or two.
  5. Where do we think Braylon Payne slots in? I am sure we will be waiting until the end of the year to do another vote but just curious. mlb.com has him 9, we had him 18, basically everywhere else was somewhere between there. I don't want to overreact to essentially 1 good game but my guess is somewhere around 10 is ok.
  6. I agree, a bullpen game may be our best option. Hall 1 time through, Ross/Civale/Rea 1 time through. Ashby 1 time through. If we get the Braves and Sale I'd do bullpen, if it's the Mets and like Manaea I'd probably go Freddie. Freddie, Tobias, Montas, my 4th starter would be a bullpen style game.
  7. That Payne video (great job whomever is responsible) on top of the huge game vaults him way up my org. favorites.
  8. Is Braelon Payne expected to get into a couple games this weekend? I am excited to see a HS guy get an affiliated chance this year. Nice to see Bitonti go 3-3 with 3 1B and a walk. Homers are great but for him to be a big prospect he is going to need to have more of these games (and hitting 30 bombs next year won't hurt). How hard was Molina throwing? Scouting report say 90 up to 95 in college, just wondering if the stuff is better in the couple shorter starts. His strikeout numbers in college make him super interesting, with some increased accuracy and a few mph I could see a fast rise like a bunch of the 2023 drafted college arms.
  9. Whenever Wilken hits a bomb his swing looks so smooth and he just feels like a guy who should be hitting .300 when you see the effortless power. Is there a specific hole in his swing or is he just trying to pull everything, any insight on the rough stretch and why he isn't finding hits?
  10. Sure, but .236/.307/.380 isn't a good year for a guy making 25 million or so even if he plays good defense.
  11. I wouldnt go over 5/125 if I was a big money team. Swanson, Baez, Story have all feel on there face and Willy has some warning signs (defense and bat last year). His bat this year and past defense likely makes him a 9 figure man but I dout he gets what Swanson got.
  12. I'd really hate cutting Wilson and getting nothing. I agree that he is probably the low man on the totem pole as far as someone taking his 27 man spot. It might be time for him to develop some inflammation. He is 26 with 2 cheap years of control and 2 solid years back to back. If we can keep him around there is a decent prospect to be had for him. My guess is a dozen teams or so would love to have the depth and versatility he brings.
  13. I was listening to the radio and a former gm (don't remember sorry) brought up that it is time to allow teams to trade draft picks. I know that the no trading picks goes back to 1965 out of fear that teams would just sell picks. I thought this would be a good discussion. It would have been nice to trade down from like 17 to the later 20 to get Payne and pick up like a 3rd round pick. I am I'm favor of trading picks for picks and prospects (non 40 man roster players). I don't really see the down side and I think there could be some really cool deals to discuss. I think allowing picks for stars might get crazy and worsen some of the tanking issues.
  14. I've brought this up in the past but what about a 4 man rotation that has a piggyback. Basically 8 starters that combine to go 7-8 innings limiting pitchers to 60-75 pitches. 1)Peralta-Hall 2)Rea-Ashby 3)Civale-Woody 4)Myers-Wlison/free agent vet/trade acquisition/Hudson Bullpen- Megill, Hudson, Koenig, 2 of Mears, Yoho, Paredes, Bauk, Wilson Payamps, Hoby, Uribe, Peguero, vet/trade acquisitions (assuming a Devin trade) Misi, Henderson, CarRod, eventually maybe Gasser, Wichrowski, Smith, Hunt, provide depth. If injuries hit it gets easy to pivot to a 5-6 man rotation. Each guy in theory goes 3-5 innings 40 times a year, rarely would a guy go through a lineup a 3rd time. It also allows some of the injured/young guys a way to build up innings. A 5 man bullpen would not get overworked especially if we have a couple solid taxi guys. I would assume the piggyback would usually go 7 innings, rarely 6, sometime 8, once in a while 9. I get that our pen depth is a strength and this doesn't really help. In reality we should probably try and turn some quantity in a high end starter. Just a fun idea to think about.
  15. I love this idea, I would maybe put a restriction where it has to be a 1 for 1 (allow comp picks or int. money) trade. I just wouldn't want someone to get a superstar that isn't replacing an injury. I wouldnt want the Dodgers or someone trading for a superstar shortstop this late. If it was just any old trade allowed I could it benefitting big budget teams because they could acquire a big salary guy later and skirt the salary barriers easier.
  16. I know it's only been 2 appearances but do we think Ashby could be back in the rotation next year or is to perfect for the multi-inning Bryse Wilson role? Peralta, Rea, Myers, Woody, Civale Ashby and Hall as long men/6th starter.
  17. I saw David Bednar got roughed up again and his era is over 6. He could be an interesting trade candidate. He has 2 years and probably won't get a huge raise from his 4 million this year. He still throws hard, isnt walking a huge amount, and has good secondary stuff, it just looks like his heater is getting lit up.
  18. Holmes has been solid, 3.42 era in 50 innings 50/10 k/bb, 2.93 FIP. My guess is Holmes wouldn't be cheap (not crazy value either). I did like what I saw the game we played them as well. I don't know if I posted this before but what about Sandy Alcantara? The Marlins have Eury Perez, Alcantara, Luzardo, Braxton Garrett, and Ryan Weathers on the 60 man (some out all year). My guess is that the price would be high but Alcantara is one I would pony up for even coming off his injury. Would Black, Mitchell/Perkins, and like Peguero or pitching prospect be to much/little. He has 3 affordable years of control. It would be nice to add a controllable top of the rotation arm at the top of the rotation, especially an anchor like Alcantara.
  19. I would send both up and just be done with Bauers, I get that Bauer bring some value with the glove but he just doesn't hit enough. If there is a nice lefty vet 1B option to sign I wouldn't mind picking them up either but it depends on who that is. If you make me just chose between the two I will go Black because of the versatility but I won't be upset if we finally give Hicklen his long overdue chance.
  20. For me, it will come down to the playoffs on the Montas trade. We have been great since acquiring him but really it is that the rest of the division is struggling. We have seen a better version of Frankie and if we can get even 1 good start from him in the playoffs the addition of Weimer will be passable.
  21. I will start I suppose. Here is my top 5 1)Manny Rodriguez To have the success that he has had as an 18 year old without massive stuff in A ball is impressive. If he can add a mph or two each year he could be a major prosect come 2026 or so. From what I read it seems like he is the classic mlb "bulldog" pitcher already. 2)Quinton Low Quinton Low was probably the prospect I was most excited to see last year. He probably won't be a 2 way player after missing this year but the upside of his stuff, especially as a reliever is tantalizing. Hopefully we get him fully healthy and on track next year. 3)Nick Merkel At 6'7' 255, it is understandable that he might take a bit longer than some. It just seems like every time he is mentioned he gets the job done. His k rates are solid and suggests there is upside (anyone know how hard he throws). 4)Yorman Galindez There are probly 3/4 other young arms in Carolina that I could put here but 64 k's in 40 innings gets my attention. I know he has a really good curve and can still fill out some to add to the heater. 5)Ernesto Martinez I feel like he is a guy like Garrett Cooper who won't quite get a chance with us and when he does with another team he will shine. He is super athletic for 6'6' and playing well for a AA team struggling to hit. Maybe he erupts with a move to more friendly confines next year. He could easily be a 20/20 or better candidate when it all comes together.
  22. I thought this might be a nice place to discuss prospects that don't appear in any major top 30 style publications that might have some big upside. I feel like we for sure have a couple more Tobias Myers in the system who come out of no where and stun the scouting community. I don't mind discussing guys like Jadher Arienamo or KC Hunt who are in starting to be in most top 30 list but I'd prefer to keep it to the deeper cuts.
  23. He will have finished in the top 8 in the CY Young 5 years in a row. Gerrit Cole was top 5 3 of 5 years (no wins) and a couple years younger. Cole got $36 million per year, take a couple years of and 7/252 is probably a starting point.
