  1. it was something like Astros trade for Randy Wolf, crush pirates dream of finishing in 5th place Yeah, that was it.
  2. Just pick up the Ratchet and Clank games and you're set for a while.
  3. From the article: Washburn probably would most like to go to Milwaukee, his hometown. Fer chrissakes. Yeah, everyone in WI lives in one of two cities people have heard of: Milwaukee or Green Bay. Also, they eat cheese constantly and have a farm. Webster is only 350 miles away, so the writer was pretty close.
  4. Remember when Melvin was saying that Turnbow was our 9th inning guy in the offseason before we signed Gagne? Boy, that seems like a long time ago. Then remember when he said it was Eric Gagne? I don't really know which is worse.
  5. Maybe the increased tax is meant to be a protection to the public similar to the cigarette tax, due to the poor team playing there. Well played. "We promise to use the money for a public education program so we can teach our children to avoid the dangers of awful baseball". When demand is low for something the government WANTS to sell, raising the price of it is awfully stupid. That's like a state with a bad, underfunded education system trying to raise the price of books.
  6. With LaPorta out of the equation, I think you need to consider putting Gamel in his role of taking Hart's spot to move Corey to CF. By all reports, unless Prince leaves and opens up first, OF will be the best option for Gamel. I wish Weeks would make things easy on us by producing so we can look at an infield of Hardy Escobar, Weeks, and Fielder, which would likely mean a great left side, but it may come down to moving JJ to 2B and keeping Hall at 3B.
  7. His $4.8MM this year is tolerable, it's the 6.8 and 8.4 he's owed for the next two years that trouble me.
  8. Umm, if we are judging which sports athletes should be playing by the highest paid player in that sport, why aren't baseball players playing golf instead? I guess they had to settle for baseball because golf was just too hard for them, it involves too much walking around. . It's so much harder to make an Olympic track and field team than it is to make a baseball team that it's laughable to even compare the two. There are 750+ (because of callups and injuries) jobs available every year in baseball, compared to 70 spots every 4 years in U.S. Olympic track and field. In addition, the field of possible track athletes includes basically anyone who ever played any sport. If a guy was especially fast or strong but mainly played football or basketball or soccer or wrestled, I guarantee the coaches had him go out for track as well. You can just as easily make the case that pro baseball, football and basketball players aren't good enough to make the track team as you can the opposite point. Yeah, not real sure where you found anything to get snippy about. In fact, I'm pretty much convinced that you took what I was saying, added a couple of paragraphs, an "ummm", and an "it's laughable to even compare the two." What I said was that the world's best athletes often aren't as good at the mainstream sports as they are in their arena. Simply being super-athletic doesn't generalize all over the range of sports one can play. Michael Jordan was both one of the best athletes in his sport's history and a failed baseball player.
  9. Karma is about as real as a Leprechaun with wings who poops golden eggs. The Brewers will never lose due to a thread on a fan site unless somehow a member was privy to confidential information and leaked it (e.g. posted photos of a player cheating on his wife which caused him personal problems and then he stunk it up due to lack of sleep). Not a real likely occurrence. I can walk around my house with a broom in my hand and walk under 50 ladders during game 3 of a series we won the first two games of and it will never matter.
  10. IF we make the playoffs... it means Torres is doing his job. Which means why change things? Absolutely. You could assume that if he's healthy enough to pitch, he could get people out, but to assume that after missing that much time Gallardo could immediately shake off the rust and be a shut down closer would be extremely optimistic. It's not just about playing it safe with his health, this is about realizing Yo will be rusty as heck and gonna need plenty of work getting his mechanics and routines back in order.
  11. Jackson was considered a great baseball prospect in high school though, and for more than athleticism. I remember hearing a lot about how fluid he played in the field and that he had a pretty nice swing. I don't know Brewer's high school credentials that well, but I remember Jackson quite well since I actually worked at Denton Ryan High when he was there and was an avid reader of the Denton Record Chronicle at the time. Ryan High had a string of a couple of very good players including Javy Guerra and Ryan DeLaughter playing at the same time. I never got to see Jackson play baseball, but did see him play basketball.
  12. GAWKERS. There's simply nothing that wastes more time and slows traffic more than a bunch of idiots, driving mouth agape past an accident or someone pulled over. "Hey Lyle, does we know him? That looks like Frank's truck!". No, you don't know him, stop it, there are 5.5 million people here, and you don't know them, you've never known anyone in an accident you drove by. Knock it off.
  13. Hopefully a lesson learned -- don't draft the best athete available, draft the best player available. This isn't a decathlon. Yeah, there's a reason a ton of the world's best athletes are about to go compete in China for zero dollars and a shot at a couple of endorsement deals instead of making millions and millions playing in MLB, the NFL, or the NBA. Think our best sprinters wouldn't prefer A-Rod's contract?
  14. Are you talking about Mota or Gagne? That's a little more like a week-old Bill Hall spitter cup.
  15. Like obsessed said, Melvin made one incredible reliever acquisition last winter and one that stunk worse than a bathroom stall after a Matt Stairs vs. Reuben Quevedo egg roll eating contest. If Gagne weren't so horribly overpaid, I'd say it all evens out.
  16. I wish I had the time and desire to smoke some barbecue. I actually went the other direction and bought a big gas grill this weekend. Yeah, it ain't the same as charcoal, but when you have 4 hours a night from the time you get home until bedtime, you find yourself never grilling at all, and gas with a tin of wet hickory chips still beats the pants off of an oven.
  17. If guys like Marcel are so good at predicting the future, why aren't they GM's? The same reason computer programmers don't run software companies - it's a different skill to be able to interpret data vs. running a franchise. They do one small part of a GM's job.
  18. If Durham is just red hot for the rest of the year, you could assume he'd decline arbitration and look for a 2 year deal worth more money, but otherwise I would not take the chance just to see if we maybe get a draft pick out of it. $6MM would have to look pretty attractive to him, and I don't see him turning it down, as not many teams would offer more than 1 year for a guy that close to collecting social security.
  19. If Salome is involved in this trade, it means one of 3 things. 1) the return is better than Durham and Taschner, 2) Melvin has completely lost his mojo and turned into a moron, or 3) something's going on with Salome that we aren't hearing about (related to the failed drug test). His inclusion, at face value, makes very little sense. It could be the case that Attanasio told Melvin to avoid increasing payroll if at all possible and Sabean said he'd cover a huge chunk of Durham's salary if and only if we included Salome, and then this makes more sense.
  20. My advice to you is be open to leaving the midwest, probably for a couple of years, if you want any chance to get a job in the midwest. Very good advice. For example, here in DFW, which grew by over 100,000 last year, new schools pop up like crazy and they have to resort to putting up portable classrooms in the rear of the school because they can't build new ones fast enough. Additionally, go to realtor.com and look at the houses you can buy here for $150,000. The downside is, you live in Texas.
  21. Giving up Salome in that deal wouldn't be real cool with me. Taschner's having a decent year (but prone to sucking) but I'm not jumping for joy other than the implication that Mota will be out of work, and Durham puts up decent numbers but comes with a decent chunk of salary.
  22. Had Gallardo not gotten hurt, I wonder if Melvin makes the CC trade? I still would have. Imagine that threesome I had shivers when I thought about this the day the trade went down. Seriously, our rotation would be so ridiculously stacked with those three at the top, a hot Manny Parra, and whoever takes the last spot would be among the top #5's I can remember recently.
  23. Whenever I get back to WI I gotta make a stop at Rocky's; my friends say that I have to get a pizza and bring it on the plane back with me. My best friend used to live in Sacramento back when I was in Eau Claire and he had me go to Rocky's on $1 slice night and bring 20 frozen slices with me when I came to visit. His mom had purchased the perfect sized soft-sided cooler to fit them in and we had to pick it up and drop off at his mom's before any trip. Today for lunch I'm going to a dumpy Taco place in a dumpy town in north texas that has the greatest Tacos money can buy, and the meal is $3.99.
  24. Pita-Pit is pretty good when you're drunk hungry at 3am and need a delivery. Cheap too. I'll second that. Also, as far as buffets go, I like Golden Corral. There used to be a chain called Tia's Tex-Mex which was awesome (think they're bankrupt). I've yet to find truly good pizza in Texas. Nothing like a good deepdish or Edwardo's-style mountain of pizza. All you get is bland generic hand tossed.
  25. They are such a huge step up from the disgusting LeeAnn Chin's that are prevalent in Minnesota. Dis-gusting. Man do I hate that nasty pan-Asian slophouse. I'm a big Whataburger fan, and love White Castle. My favorite chains in TX are mostly limited size (10-20 locations) places. The places I miss most down here are Rocky Rococo and Culver's (though there's one an hour away).
