  1. I guess I don't understand why it's OK to trade Sexson under the same scenario, but trade Sheets? No way! Sure the clubs are at different places in the grand scheme of things from back then to now, but having Sheets break down in "our year" in 2008 and another finish around .500, and they're all of a sudden heading down 'Rebuild Lane' again...I'm suggesting going down 'Reload Lane' I think the big difference is that back then we sucked, had 10 holes, AND had Prince Fielder 2 years away. The Sexson deal addressed needs in the current and future. It's not likely we get that now since it's not as easy to upgrade as it was then because we actually have major league players pretty much everywhere. We wouldn't make the Sexson deal today (without Prince behind him) because the guys we got wouldn't be an upgrade. Moeller would be a definite backup, Spivey would be a backup, Cappy's wouldn't be as attractive, we already have a Craig Counsell, Overbay would be OK, and DLR would be less attractive since we have SP prospects ready to step up. Today we need bigger prospects and better players to make it worth it (except stud relievers, which wouldn't be enough).
  2. I absolutely hate that stupid Buick commercial with the really bad cover of "Come and get it". I had to quit watching The Simpsons tonight after that commercial was on TWICE per commercial break all the way through Family Guy and Simpsons. It got to be too much. Actually, I hate any commercial with a cover song.
  3. I can't believe that his deal is up after next year, as it seems as though he just signed what at the time was a big 4-year extension just last offseason. Yeah, seems like just yesterday a "certain somebody" was telling us to expect a major announcement around the time of fanfest.
  4. What I'd really like to do is find some way to blame this on Sal Bando. Easy. In 1998, the Brewers, under Bando, selected JM Gold with the 13th pick. A guy named Sabathia fell 7 more spots. CC's 3.19 ERA would have looked pretty darn good this year. The year before, they took Kyle Peterson over Lance Berkman.
  5. Just venting about the "People with more control that Turnbow" thread getting locked. It was a vent. But that was pretty funny too. It probably would've been cool in the vent thread, and we already have one for venting purposes. I guess the initial post could be taken as ripping on someone's physical handicap. The rest were good, though, and I'd like to add... http://blogs.trb.com/news/celebrity/blog/fergiepee1.jpg
  6. Now that we're hanging on by the smallest of threads, I thought I'd get everyone else's opinion on the guy they'll blame most if/when we're officially eliminated. Aside from Yost, who is your 2007 scapegoat? That is, even though plenty of guys have wilted and failed us down the stretch, who do you blame even more than you probably should? Personally, I'm splitting it between Cappy and Sheets - two guys that could have been so huge, and were expected to be our top 2 starters, and they sucked and got injured, respectively. There are plenty of players you can make an argument for, who's yours? Please don't turn this into the venting thread part 2, we already have one.
  7. Considering Milwaukee is the romance capital of the world, you pretty much can't go wrong - chicks just lap that atmosphere up.
  8. Braun, because if he walks, Prince is up next, who's actually my number 1 choice if you take the possibility of a BB out of the equation.
  9. I can't get in. I keep getting the "wrong password" message, which has never happened to me before.
  10. Typically, prices are really jacked up for those sales. First, the car will need to be priced higher than a certain amount to be eligible($9-10k seems typical), and second, there seems to be a no-haggle price. I remember going to a couple of those sales and the price was the high end of retail blue book, maybe a grand or two more than another dealership. Then, you figure that you can talk the other dealership down by a grand, and they're really not giving you much for your trade. Nobody can give you a ton in trade unless the sticker price would bring in a huge profit. I've definitely found way better deals elsewhere, like cheaper independent dealerships or autotrader.
  11. I really can't see the team spending big on free agent relievers. More likely, we'll deal from areas of organizational strength for them. If Gallardo and Villanueva are cemented into the rotation, that leaves us with them, Sheets, and Suppan as the certainties, which leaves Vargas, Bush, and Capuano fighting for the fifth spot. Of the two that miss out, one could perhaps be converted to relief and maintained as the 6th starter, while the other could be traded to fill weaknesses. We also have Parra to consider.
  12. I'd say the Ion compares to the Civic in size. I've been a passenger in both, so I'm just going from memory. The next size up is similar in size to Accord or Camry.
  13. I personally do not have a favorable opinion of Hyundai. However, I've talked to dealers (not in the context of car shopping, some were friends of mine) who said just what you did about their quality having really increased in the past few years. If you're into imports and really want to beat the crap out of it in terms of mileage, I personally think that Nissan and Mazda are very underappreciated because everyone brags up Honda and Toyota, inflating their resale value. I don't know anyone who had a Nissan that prematurely crapped the bed on them.
  14. This is definitely the lowest of lows I've felt this year. Right now, I really feel convinced that it's over.
  15. Boo for 10:00 on a Tuesday morning though with no internet access at work. 10 am is stupid. Seriously, can't they do it at night for once? They could even open it up at like 6:00 am so everyone has a chance. I mean, this would only be the biggest thing to happen to the team in 25 years.
  16. So, where does he end up next year? Will anyone even see the performance as justifying the circus? Link
  17. I'd really advise you to pay more attention to your GPA than some others are. True, many employers simply look for a degree earned and not GPA. However, there are a lot of ways GPA will make you stand out. If you ever transfer to a department with selective admissions, they're gonna look at GPA. If you ever think about grad school, they're gonna look at GPA. Want a competitive internship (that will lead to a nice job? GPA. Want to add a couple things to your resume? Dean's lists and academic honors can set you apart. If you want a letter of recommendation from a professor in a big department where they don't know individual students very well, they'll base a lot of it on your academic record. So yeah, in the end, your future employer may not pay a ton of attention to GPA, but the things on your resume aside from "Bachelor of [college]: [major]" are easier to get when your grades are good. I got my undergrad research experience which led to the the letter of rec that probably sealed the deal for grad school admission (he would have written one for employment too) because I had very good grades. but because he was SUPER conservative (by his own admission). Ran for office in Madison as a Libertarian I believe. Crazy man...liked to talk about drinking a lot...fun class. Those guys always make for very interesting lecturers. The angry "I do what I want and everyone who tells me otherwise is an idiot" bitter old man types are some of my favorite professors. Even though I don't align well with them politically, I really like the approach of critically/cynically evaluating everything more than the "everything is wonderful" approach. The ability to think critically and be an objective skeptic is a very important academic skill, IMO.

  20. Instructional Fall League? what does that even mean? Desperate ugly chicks who won't be overly critical?
  21. Exactly, that is why I think it is ridiculous when people continuessly rip ESPN for every little mistake they make. It's not like people are saying ESPN should be shut down. Rather, people think ESPN is less than it could be, and saying they make some stupid moves. It's not really any different from when we criticize the Brewers for blowing a game. Nobody is saying the Brewers should be contracted, they're stating what they want to improve.
  22. I just got an email from Blockbuster informing me that the $17.99 plan I have is no longer offered. Now, you only get 5 exchanges at the store per month at that price, or you can still get unlimited but it's $25. I'm not thrilled about this.
  23. So there is money to work with next year. With the huge profit this year, I'd be shocked if payroll wasn't north of $70. So $10-20 million to work with next year. Our best bet with salary flexibility is to obtain a player via trade with a sizeable contract but only 2 years remaining - like Carlos Lee when we got him. The flexibility is unlikely to last very long because of raises due to our young core down the road. A 4-5 year deal for a quality player may put the team in a position to be unable to afford to keep the young guys. But since Cordero and Linebrink are both Type A Free Agents - when we lose them we will get two draft choices for each. One pick from the team that signs them - and then a sandwich pick between the first and second round which is awarded from MLB. I'm no expert, but while Cordero should be a lock, I don't know if new rules will make Linebrink a type A or B.
  24. I've actually thought about UW Milwaukee lately. I've already gotten the itch to finish the job and get my PhD and their department is pretty solid.
