Sat. 7/8 - We Can Discuss the Futures Game Here As Well
BrewerFan replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Is it on today? I see it's scheduled for the MLB network tomorrow. -
Garver would be great...but hard to see the Rangers trading away depth given how well they're playing this year. The Red Sox have to be looking to trade Turner, right? He's got a player option for next year and is gonna get nearly 7M if he exercises it(which he presumably will as he's still hitting and would almost certainly get more than 6M in FA). He shouldn't cost much in terms of prospects. And Boston has 4 starting pitchers on the IL right now with Sale back on the 60 day, has started 22 games in 4 years, so I doubt they'll be banking on much of anything from him with the "chance to come back in August" diagnosis. In fact, we should probably look to get a reliever back with Turner if we give up even a...IDK, Jarvis type prospect. Boston seems like a team that'll likely look to be spending a lot of money this off-season, so clearing whatever cash they can this year, plus a few team options, that's a deal that should be made.

This IS the same team that moved Travis Shaw to 2B. It's a bit hard to envision them moving Yelich just as he's hitting the ball as well as he has since 2018, but it could solve a few issues. Tyler Black is a guy I'd at least consider if we can't find another in-house solution, but I've yet to see him in the lineup at 1B in Biloxi(could have missed it). LOL...I'm shocked we didn't send Quero, Chourio, and Frelick out last year for JD Davis...what with Stearns being a double agent! The serious part, I wouldn't consider Chourio for Alonso. I'm not trading him for any player with a year and a half of service time. Same goes for Misiorowski, Frelick or Quero. And it'd have to be real significant upgrade(Someone like Alonso that we'd make a QO to) to trade that next group, Turang, Wiemer, Black, Lara or Gasser. I wonder what type of trade value Mitchell would have? He's the OFer I have the least faith in. Being his non-throwing shoulder that's injured...maybe a team not contending wouldn't mind waiting until '24 to get him on the field.

Anderson on paternity leave…..’Jahmai Jones signed

Fair enough, but at least with Weeks you got good offensive production. He may not have reached the lofty 40/40 potential I remember a BA write-up suggesting he was capable of, but his "disappointing" years he was at least getting on base and never looked as lost as Hiura did just getting beat by those Fastballs. I'd be thrilled if 26 year old Hiura produced like Weeks did from 26-29 for the Brewers...even if it wasn't quite Sheffield without the attitude. -

I'm not sure that means people don't appreciate how good he's been defensively, likely just curious what they'd do with the roster with a guy who's had an outstanding year in AAA vs LHPing vs a who's struggling to stay above .200...even though I believe he's a net positive, I can see where that's coming from. -

Who are we talking about? Hiura in AAA, Winker? He's seemed to have just BRUTAL luck this year. I could see two of the balls he hit being 112. The LD to RF. I think the 10 days off for Tellez is going to be good for him. I think if Winker had been a Brewer for a while, this fanbase would be much more confident in his ability to get it going(though he may just have broken down). Hiura has done everything you possibly can to get another shot. Rowdy was never prime Pujols, but he's been a solid hitter ever year of his career. Sooner or later, they'll have to give up on at least one of them and inevitably watch a Florida team claim/sign them after clearing and then that player will hit well the rest of the year. -
Yeah, it's all good for me now. I should have just sent a direct message, just curious if anyone had a quick solve or a workaround. Can't clear my cache. I'd lose about 90 passwords to streaming devices and other various online services I use that I can't be bothered to write down!

Surely you mean Middleton and Lopez' last run with Giannis(and even Jrue), right? In 2 years, the Bucks will have a ton of cap room and who knows what they'll have in Livingston, Marjon, Jackson and whomever they take in the 1st next year. The Cap holds will be small and could easily be renounced outside their top players. They'll have Giannis at ~51, Marjon at 4.5, Jackson and Livingston at 2M each. All that cap space, the MLE that could be ~15M a year, Bi--Annual. And then Portis at ~13, Middleton at 36, Connaughton at ~9 Player options and those are valuable in and of themselves if they're looking to trade to acquire players as they're all expiring. Add another young 1st round pick next year, and they'll have a massive amount of roster flexibility in 2 years. And remember, Bradley Beal was basically a salary dump. Who knows what players will be salary dumbs by that point wile also being The next 2 years(or 3)....could well be the end of the Giannis era. He'll also be 30 years old with what should be a lot of good basketball left in him. A defensive first player like Jackson who's an outstanding passer, a long wing like Majon who can defend and hopefully score, a total X-Factor like Livingston who has star potential(and also the potential to be out of the league by then)...it may be a very appealing place for players requesting trades or who are FAs. Maybe Brandon Ingram and Jamal Murray find that appealing or Lauri Markkanen, Myles Turner, OG Anunoby and Derrick White. Maybe it'll be players who break out in the next 2 years. Maybe it'll be one of a dozen veterans who want or are demanding trades and we actually have assets to acquire them. Trade flexibility, ample salary cap space, all the other avenues to add players available to them, draft picks available. Giannis is an appealing player to play with and he'd still be right in his prime. But I'll just enjoy the next two years and I'm certainly not worried about this being "Last run" with a guy who's never given any indication he want to leave Milwaukee.

I think they'll give Hiura one more shot if Winker can't get it going. I think he's earned it. The new, more compact swing, it'd be a shame to give up on him. Give Tellez/Winker to the ASB, if they can't get it going, maybe DFA Winker, a short IL sting for Rowdy and give Hiura some ABs. I think he got a little too homer happy and it hurt him. But he's much calmer at the place, looks more on time. Hope he's still part of the plans. Seems exactly like the type of guy we give up on and then he goes to Cleveland and becomes a .300 hitter with some power. His bat speed is just too damn good for him to be as bad as he was. -

Really? I guess it's a matter of perception. It seems like I hear/see people raving about it. I guess if you're talking about hypothetically the family members I was around for the 4th who aren't big Brewers fans may not appreciate his defense and just see his BA, but people who pay attention(certainly anyone who comes to a Brewers message board) seem to and even more casual Brewers Twitter seems to. He and Wiemer seem pretty popular for two guys hitting ~200. FWIW, Baseball Savante has him at +1 OAA at 2nd, -2 at SS and -1 overall. Small sample. That does not match the eye test AT-ALL. The Brewers run under Stearns has changed my opinion on baseball a bit. The value of chemistry...maybe small ball isn't overrated, I used to think you could quantify Baseball easier than I now do. Turang is a valuable player. And if he JUST relaxes at the plate and doesn't press, he's going to hit .250/.330/.350 this year and that's maybe not impressive, but the defense and pressure he puts on defenses, it'll be worth a lot. On another note, I'm still firmly on the Winker board. Every time he hits one on the screws, it's right at someone. He hit a bullet to RT, right at Happ. Adames, Tellez, Winker, keep everything the same, but get one going and a couple small trades and I think we could get hot. -

I'd argue the bat players more on this team than any other, but Turang is just a winner. He had a disappointing game today(at least 2 opportunities to make contact and get a run in with less than 2 out and he went out of the zone). But the first couple days he made some incredible plays to save runs and was barreling up the ball. Also, I don't think Schroder believes that you put the bat out there irrespective of defense. He wasn't pushing for Braun to play 3B. I think he's saying the bat always plays as in...they'll find a place for him. And if this guy can hit, particularly vs lefties, they will find a place for him. Good hitters don't languish away on the bench. Anyway, I really do think Turang and these young guys change this team. They make them more than the sum of their parts. The presure they put on with speed, they mostly draw walks, great defense and they're just exciting. As for Hiura, I think his fate at the moment rests on Winker and Tellez. Whom I both still believe in, but who are running out of time(Winker in particular). There's probably also a bit of trepidation given this is likely Hiura's last shot with the Brewers...and if you're gonna bring him up and play him 2-3 times a week, he's likely to struggle. I'd guess if Winker doesn't hit in the next 3 weeks, Hiura becomes the DH(Which would hurt given what we were counting on from him). I was banking on Adames, Tellez, Contreras and Winker to have productive seasons, Frelick to be a really good rookie and Mitchell to basically do what Wiemer's doing except without the splits vs lefties. We've really only got one of those 4 in Contreras and Yelich is suddenly looking like the player we traded for(not the one we extended per say, but traded for). Yet despite all the players who've performed well below expectations without Woodruff and several other injuries. Feeling pretty good about where we're at right now. -
Article: Nygaard Mock Draft v. 2.0
BrewerFan replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
I like 2 of Meyer, Schaunel and White in our first 3. I'm not the least big concerned about our history of Prep arms as that seems like a distance memory by now. And with all the good College bats, I think Schaunel may fall to our 2nd pick... -
Seems unlikely they'd make another trade like Hader(but more consequential) after seeing how last year went, but also just because there are so many possible starting pitchers available. Giolito, Cease, Bieber, Webb, Rodriguez....and then some guy who thinks he can pitch AND hit and be successful at it. So seems unlikely we'll get that Godfather offer to even make it worth considering. Meanwhile, any offer for Adames is going to be for a ~2 WAR player rather than the ~4 WAR player he actually is. Seems as likely now that the Brewers let him play it out until Free Agency than they trade him(maybe a QO if he has a big year next year). I did read one funny line while reading one deadline list of players who should/could be traded; I guess a team that trades a future HOF 3B on a...pretty good deal, then eats I believe it was 80M of it(with the option picked up) and doesn't get back one elite prospect...that line is fitting. STL ended up getting him for ~22M a year.

Good teams have players who come out of nowhere. I'm not sure we're the prior yet or that he'll be the later, but it's baseball...it happens. -

BrewerFan replied to markedman5's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I'd heard it...never in a million years would I have been able to come up with it and only remembered I'd heard of it when I saw he was a former Angels farmhand. I saw him pinch hitting and said aloud who the-__ is that...and before the word that came out, the ball left his bat at 108 and was going over Tauchman's head! So more vaguely remember who he was I guess more than the name. I won't be forgetting soon. -
I'm exceptionally skeptical about a Harden trade. That the Bucks would even look into it. Harden has a no-trade clause and expects a max contract. It makes very little sense from the Bucks standpoint and it makes absolutely no sense from the Sixers. They're holding off on giving Maxey an extension so they have room to add a max deal next year in Free Agency(even with a 13M cap hold for Maxey they should have ~70M in cap space)...so why trade for Jrue and lose that ability to sign a player before they give Maxey a max level extension? It'd undermine everything they've done...unless Jrue opts out, but you'd have to be hoping he does. I'd imagine they'd be targeting Siakam, Hield and then once they sign them, give Maxey his deal. They're in a position the Bucks are hoping to be in 2 years from now. As for Giannis, It'd be more surprising if Giannis signed now than if he didn't. Giannis JUST made a social media post that his career in Milwaukee is "half over" and how much he still wants to do here. He's halfway through his deal...it seems premature to worry about his next deal. Make the right moves and decisions and there's no indication Giannis won't stick around. And Lopez has yet to sign. The Bucks can still make trades, combine salaries, take on more money than they send out. These are all just agreed upon deals...I don't think I see them making a deal, but if the Pacers wanna send Buddy Hield to use for Allen and Connaughton...I'd be game. I wonder if they'd use Portis though? If they perhaps kept Crowder, added Robin Lopez for the purpose? I think it'd be a bad idea to do that to Portis after all he's done to stay in Milwaukee, but Hield is the ideal fit on this team, but it also feels like Indiana wants to keep their options open next year(hence Browns 2 year 45M deal that has a TO for year 2).
-
The only reason I'd really want to trade Jrue would be for an upgrade as he's been pretty clear he's done in 2 years(maybe 1 more year). I don't see Harden being that upgrade. He may put up points and assist totals, but I just don't think he's a great player at this stage(or even a real #2 star). Beal had his warts, but he was about as good as we could have done...he chose Pho. 25-26 we should have a ton of cap room and it's a huge FA class(though again, always is 2 years out). Giannis will have to do some planning and banana-boating if he wants to have success here long term-as in after the next 2 years. Or the Bucks will have to get exceptionally lucky. Beauchamp, Livingston, both could be stars. Not all that likely either one became a #2 on a Title caliber team, but we'll see.
-
That's how he's been used thus far. I did get to see him play in HS and he just laid the wood on guys. It was impressive. Now...that's HS, but there have been a lot of talented players to come from that conference and he's the best I've seen.

25, 12K per 9 last year in AA. Threw 2.1 IP this year, went on the IL May 7th, that's all I can find...beyond his scouting report which sounds filthy. Sits in the 96-99 range, touches triple digits, wild, but has a splitter and slider that apparently get a ton of movement, but like most guys with this profile, struggles with walks. Beyond that, I don't know. I tend to jump to TJ when I see a pitcher struggle, then miss a couple months, but maybe they're working with him in the famous pitching lab trying to get some things ironed out. Given he was a throw in with Contreras, anything out of him is gravy, but he's would anyone be shoced to see him throwing the 8th inning for the Brewers next year? I'm still holding out hope. He's been such a good hitter and the last week or so he's had really good ABs. I think given who our options are, he's worth giving a little more rope to. But he'll probably end up like McCuth and end up in Cincy next year with a top 10 BA, OBP, and whatever else they rattled off when pointing out how good he'd been. Speaking of which, not the forum for it, but if the Pirates were to sell, I'd be more than happy to step behind that Donkey and hope he didn't kick me again. But assuming they'll hold onto a franchise Icon having a great year.
-
That's a big one. If he'd picked 'Bama(who offered) he'd be a top 150 prospect in about 6 weeks). 2nd highest rated CB the Badgers have picked up in the "internet recruiting era," per TheAthletic. 2nd straight year with a 4 star. They've got a top 150 Safety who should be emerging this year in Woehler. This staff has a LOT of momentum. More than I could have possibly imagined this time last year. Their '24 class was already a top 20 class and if they can routinely pull in top 20 classes with competent QBs, get the OL play back up to par...I don't think it'll happen, but I COULD see this team in the CFP in the future....down the road. This year, B1G West is very winnable.

Cohen all but came out and said he’s hiring Stearns
BrewerFan replied to brewers888's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
No...I think if he was hands on, you'd have seen a trade that would have seen a Frelick/Wiemer/Turang or whatever combination of young players for a bat. I believe Stearns intentionally operated conservatively so if a move came up, he didn't have to push ownership into agreeing to it. I believed Mark A when he said there was no player they couldn't acquire last year due to payroll issues for this year or this year and the next. -
Cohen all but came out and said he’s hiring Stearns
BrewerFan replied to brewers888's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I think he's been hands off for the most part the last 4-5 years(he was back during the Suppan era). I do think he kinda handed the reins to Stearns and just gave him guidelines. I believe Attanasio when he said that Stearns and Arnold called and said they "had something they wanted to do with Hader." I don't believe that was pushed by ownership because it didn't save them money. I also believe they COULD spend more money, but not a whole lot. I completely disagree Stearns would be a "complete disaster" with the Mets payroll. They're spending nearly half a billion(would have been over if Correa would have passed his physical) as it is. So not only is it absurdly high bar to be a "disaster in NY," with that payroll, but his big flaws have been what? LoCain, then signing Yelich off the two best offensive seasons(arguably) in Brewers history and...who else? Peralta? Ashby? They made a 9 figure offer to Darvish the same off-season they signed LoCain and traded for Yelich. Those aren't "disaster" moves for the Cohen Mets, those are average salaries for non-arbitration players. They were barely "disaster" moves for the Brewers. Cohen has talked about how he wants to build a farm system and be the Dodgers of the East(he's already blowing past that financially). But they've already got Alvarez and Baty up. Lindor for 340M, Sherzer and Verlander at 43M AAV(I don't think that's bad for short deals TBH though they don't look great). Nimmo...a solid contract. 20M a year for a ~4 WAR CFer. And arguably the best closer. If the Brewers had that type of payroll, I feel fairly confident Burnes and Woodruff would be locked up for another 5 years, Hader would have signed an extension. Yelich as well I'm sure. Maybe Adames...Williams would likely have signed an extension by now. I think as much as anything, the Dodgers and teams with big payrolls who ALSO want to build top farm systems, the payroll gives them the luxury of not pushing those prospects. It also gives them massive scouting departments and just benefits you in every way. I really can't imagine how Stearns would be a disaster having an extra 200+ million to spend with 4 top 100 prospects, plus a top 5 overall prospect now in the Bigs in Alvarez and a top 20 60 feet away from him in Baty. The Mets REALLY don't have terrible long term deals relative to their silly payroll. They're playing poorly, they're going to sell at the deadline and add to their farm system...maybe they even add a couple prospects for Verlander/Scherzer and then paying some of either deal(obviously). He'd walk in and have to be salivating. He could easily sign an Ohtani, a guy like Urias...hell, if he wanted, a Josh Hader. But these contracts are always going to look bad on the backend. That's true for everyone. The Dodgers minimize that but even they have that issue(Betts I doubt will look great in 2032 at 30M), I assume Stearns will as well and stay away from those 12 year deals as much as possible, but they all look bad at the end. That's part of being a big market and players in free agency. Ohtani, Diaz, a more competent manager and there's absolutely no reason that team can't get back to 100 wins. I still think they can make a push to get into the WC chase. -
He has. Peguero has as well. Wilson. I think the Brewers win this one long term...but there's more context to it. That Oakland loved Ruiz so much changes the whole deal. Side note, there's no chance BRef is accurate with Hader's height, right? They have him listed as 5'10? I thought he was at least 6'3 if not taller. Devin Williams is not 4 inches taller than him...right?
