  1. I don't think that offer would be nearly good enough and I don't like the idea of giving up almost 7 years of an elite catcher and OFer for a rental. I'd get over it and enjoy the hell outta it...but I am fine with the fact that our farm system will continue to grow and we'll take our chances with the staff we have and hopefully a couple bats who can just be solid hitters at 1B/DH, maybe as a platoon player in the OF...
  2. Well...better than what I was thinking. Just happened to check on the score as the game was starting up again. Just saw the 45 pitches and a new pitcher. Good to know though.
  3. Pratt in particular. It really did seem like 2M was going to be pretty close to his asking price. Leston, Adamczewski maybe? I'm curious what Gholston's price was. He already said he's not signing, but until the deadline passes, that option is still on the table. I don't think anyone would have imagined we'd have ~1.43M to use on picks 11-20.
  4. There has to be some merit to the idea I'd think. At the very least, they're not a team like...the Rockies who are just utterly clueless. You'd have to have a pretty mature kid who was thinking big picture like that. I'd think athletes at this level would have a whole lot of confidence. The Rays, LAD, NYY, Cleveland, Houston vs the Rox, Angels, Pirates...etc...
  5. Damn...didn't see this. You don't go halfway, do you! Great post though. Also don't know how I missed that the Pirates got Reynolds for McCutchen, but that's just another example why I don't like the idea of giving up some of these players in A ball who aren't valued as top prospects or as elite prospects(Lara, Guillarte, players of that ilk) in a trade...not that they were drafted. Anyway, great post.
  6. The big problem with the Hader trade was the...just ridiculous expectations. And then trading him while the team was in first place...I mean, management has said it wasn't a good decision or one they didn't realize the impact it would have. You can point out that we had the same record after as we'd had since May(whatever the exact timeline was) but we traded away a core part of the team. So I don't think there was really any return that was going to make people happy. The standard was kinda the Chapman trade. An overpay for a great reliever because the Cubs were desperate. A year out we seem to have beaten that after flipping Ruiz. If you're not happy with that because you're supposed to get good players...alright. I don't think you were ever going to be.
  7. He was the most vocal about it...or one of them. Things worked out great. I think if you brought him back...they'd probably work out great again. I wouldn't be worried about how it'd work...for the next couple months. I also don't think anyone would be talking about this if Hader wasn't a Brewer....and I can't even picture a scenario in which the Pads come back to the Brewers and accept a realistic trade package they'd be willing to give up. It'd be great to slide Payamps into that 7th inning role, Peguero into the 6th or just use them whenever, but Gasser has good stuff. I think it'd play up in relief.
  8. I thought Black has looked very good at 3B. He can cover ground, he's got soft hands and the arm looks fine...from what I can tell. I also think about the Phillies game yesterday when we won 5-3 and you could point directly to the defensive plays they didn't make at 3B vs the plays we did make that was the difference in the game. It feels like it'd be a bit of a waste to DH him and keep that speed and athletic ability off the field, but it'd be a much bigger waste to just keep throwing out a .500 OPS at DH. I'd be MORE than happy with .240/.350/.400 at this point, and then his speed on the bases.
  9. I don't think the argument is that the better arms are in AA is that more players jump from AA to AAA, I think the argument is the most talented prospects spend more time in AA vs higher caliber arms. Arms with better pure stuff, while AAA is...as pointed out, filled with organizational depth like Rea, Pannone, or any number of relievers who are going to bounce around. It feels like guys move through MiLB MUCH more deliberately at every level until AAA and then it's often time a final tune up vs more advanced pitchers or savvy pitchers(however you'd like to articulate it). More Misiorowski type arms in AA and more Collin Rea type arms in AAA.
  10. I thought Yeager was the reliever with the higher upside or more potential. Is he down with TJ? All I see is 7 day MiLB DL for elbow strain and then little else. Would not be hard to imagine him breaking out and becoming a nice reliever for us in the future. The trade worked out great. It certainly wasn't fun last year, but history has proven Stearns right. The ONLY thing that could have proven him more right was if Rogers had pitched up to his ability. I'd argue that Hader hadn't been "blowing up for two months," but he was SO bad right before the trade...3 straight outings giving up an ER, then 9 ERs over two outings while recording just a single out, it was pretty impressive to get what we did out of it.
  11. Don't disagree with any of this other than...I think he still has every chance to make it up and be a part of the team in Sept. I was also pretty damn impressed with the throw he made tonight doubling a guy off 1B. I thought his arm was his weakness... Anyway, he's got time to salvage this season and get to Milwaukee. I wouldn't write the whole thing off just yet. It's been a disappointing season, but young players rarely have linear paths on their ascent to the big leagues, and we should remember, this is just his second full season in our system. Chourio was "stalled out," and we should sell on him low just a week ago according to at least someone on here and more than a few people on Twitter. If Wilken is in the same place as him in 2 years, I'll be happy with that as well. If he can get hot and hit, the Brewers still have plenty of time to bring him up. He's held his own vs lefties this year as well...
  12. Well, that may be the case for Taylor and Mitchell, but Frelick was healthy when Wiemer got called up. The Brewers choose to replace Mitchell, a LHed CFer with Wiemer, not Frelick. Maybe the Brewers just knew Wiemer was this good of a CFer. He gets rid of the ball quickly...he can certainly take a crow hop and get the ball where it needs to go. I don't think the problem is he doesn't know how. He's got more than enough arm to get the ball to 2nd on a LD to the gap that he doesn't need to set himself and take a full wind hop. That's a pretty big strength. He takes some banana routes for sure...though he's looked good lately. Only real issue is on going back on balls and MLB parks are quite a bit different from what are mostly cookie cutter MiLB parks. I don't know if he needs to calm down his swing or not. I know all the pre pitch motion. That's all noise. I don't know if he needs to calm it down or not...the guy swings big all the time every time, but when the pitch is coming in, he usually ready and on time, he's just got a lot of swing and miss and pitch recognition issues. I don't know that a nice picture perfect Molitor type stance, swing is going to change anything. Maybe...he's also just young.
  13. I think both sides have a LOT of the information before hand. Not exact figures, but pretty good ideas of what they're going to get, what they want, etc...I don't think the Brewers are taking a guy in Rd1 unless they know they can get him under slot, or conversely drafting Pratt if they have no idea how much he's gonna want in bonus money.
  14. I don't know, tell me when a team went and got a reliever that had been on their team the previous 6 years winning reliever of the year 3 of them, an all star in 4 of them and I'll see if I can meet your very specific set of criteria? I guess when the Brewers re-aquired Jeffress during the 2nd most successful team in franchise History in 2018 and Knebel had to split the closer role with Jeffress while the team lost in 7 games to the Dodgers to go to the WS would be the example that comes to mind most recently, but you meet my EXTREMELY specific set of examples and then I'll meet yours, ok? This all seems like a very pointless argument as the chance this happens are exceedingly low, but I don't think you run a team out of fear of "angering our all star reliever."
  15. He'd be going back for a few months. And given the broken hand, it wouldn't break my heart if his agent was nonplussed with a trade that brought back Josh Hader and relegated Williams to the 8th inning. I don't believe any of this is going to happen, but the very slight difference in arbitration(assuming there's any) is just part of life.
  16. I can assure you, every poster would NOT have had Wiemer 4th. I was a very big fan of Wiemer. I thought he needed more time in AAA as he's had a bit of a tendency to start slow, then pick it up. This is pretty much about as badly as I thought Wiemer could hit. I didn't know he's be an elite CFer(I thought he'd be a competent one and an elite RFer). But no, Mitchell would have been my 4th by a mile. He's a lefty...which is normally a bonus, but for this team Wiemer's RHed bat is a plus. But beyond that, Wiemer has been healthy, Mitchell has not. Wiemer has more upside than the other two advanced bats(and any bat other than Chourio). He could realistically be a .900+ OPS guy despite hitting .250...and if he hits .250, it'll likely come with 30+HRs, 20+SBs and a very nice OBP as he's always walked at a high rate. Get his BABIP up...and that alone should have him at a VERY valuable .230. If by some change he hits ~.280 and walks at a ~12% rate, then we've got what we're HOPING Chourio develops into. I'm high on Chourio obvious. Frelick is the safest of all of them as far as a hitter. Mitchell has tools and is carved like a greek god, but he doesn't have Wiemer's power, his durability, he hits the ball on the ground and he struck out last year. People looked at his .832 OPS and thought he was great. He also had a OPS in the mid .600s about a week or so before the end of the season. Not to say he didn't also have value. Those were clearly the 4 prospects along with Turang last year. But this isn't selling high on Wiemer and I definitely would have rather seen Mitchell(and of course Ruiz go...again, despite liking both). I know the stats tell more than the eye test...but I can't believe this one. Wiemer, he struggles going back on balls. Has taken a few poor routes. Plays I think he'll end up making. But really only minor issues making plays against the wall. Miller looks fine at 2B, Turang looks exceptional. Had to believe Miller is rated that much higher. Willy's just Willy. I'll miss him when he's gone.
  17. He's a RFA. His rights don't belong to anyone. The Warriors did offer him a 2-way after the summer league so, they probably saw something. Once they decided to front load Lopez, it was pretty much a certainty. I'm sure they explored trade options before officially signing Lopez...but Houston pushing his contract up in FA was the last realistic chance if they keep Allen and Connaughton. And they kinda need to keep those two after losing Ingles, Carter and being real thin at Guard.
  18. I don't know if we need one, but if you moved Payamps/Peguero into the 7th and then Williams back into the 8th, that really changes the team. Kinda the Royals recipe for winning. But again, prefer to see if we can get someone who has either a year more of team control, OR who is cheaper. The Pads would likely want one of our top ~10 prospects+ a 20-30 type guy.
  19. I was as impressed with that catch going back up against the wall in CF as that batting line. What are they gonna do if he just carries on like this and they have Wiemer and Mitchell/Frelick in the OF with 70 speed Chourio...who looks like he's getting exceptional reads off the bat? I guess I'd switch it up. Frelick in LF/Chourio in CF/Wiemer in RF just so Chourio plays one position, but he may get pushed over to LF if Wiemer juuust gets better going back on the ball. If he does that, he's a GG CFer. No fly ball will touch grass
  20. Ok, but he didn't, right? They DFA'ed him...then three days later they just released him.
  21. I really doubt he leaves the Brewers for a year or two and then goes and gets a job with another team. If he retires, it'd be to the Brewers FO...and that's where he'd probably have to just go by feel. They find a new manager(maybe it's just Murphy) and I think he'd be back at some point. He's a Brewer.
  22. Yeah, preventing runs is important for every team. I'm simply saying I don't think they're going to prioritize a great defensive 3B with no bat over an average one who can hit like Black. I think he can stick there...but again, if he can't, worst case is 1B. I think we saw this draft that maybe they're again make a slight change. Wilken and Boeve certainly don't profile as elite defenders at 3B. I mean...our run prevention has been great, but without a competent offense, you're always going to be fighting an uphill battle. If we thought we could get Tyler Black to hit well the rest of the year, do you think we stick with a sub .600 OPS at 2nd over Black? There's always a sliding scale where it's going to make sense. We DID trade for Contreras despite him being an awful defensive catcher because we desperately needed offense. Maybe a more direct example is 1B. If Rowdy was hitting like he had been, he'd almost certainly be manning 1B despite being a poor fielder and Owen Miller would be playing elsewhere(probably 2B at this point).
  23. No, it's not a suprise the Brewers have seen little return on their investment as they've JUST recently made the investment. And it's comical you're ALL for those Latin American players...just dump Chourio and Quero now(two players who look like Star to Superstar type players). So you're not against getting the superstars(unless they're already in the system, then just get rid of them) you're just the most cost effective way to get superstars...? That makes sense? All so they can sign that extra reliever or 4th OFer with the savings each year! Ok...you sucked me in again. I'm gonna need to post a Mark Twain quote on the computer so I don't engage in this again.
  24. Because the "problems" are...relatively minor and being addressed. There is some weird stuff that goes on inside locker rooms. It'd always been my experience you can refuse for the most part, but there's an initiation process. It's like a family. The "car wash" would have been one I'd have refused and the "QB-C snap," but they're testing you and some of it is just stuff you have to go through. I remember being woken up with someone breaking into my dorm room banging pots and kettles making you go run, you have to do the grunt work, that stuff is fine. For as homophobic as locker rooms can be, there's no place with more homoerotic behavior though. That...that is weird. I really don't think they needed a bigger "solve,' than what they'd already come up with. And what's the other issue? A coach being verbally abusive? I don't know what he said, but I don't know, I've had lots of coaches cussing me out and yelling at me. I'd need more context. Of ALL the athletes who went through NU, you had...2 people come forward and it was from 2014 I believe? That tells me this wasn't a culture with rampant hazing. Frats are 10X worse with forcing people to drink just...ridiculous amounts of alcohol. But it's still a B1G coaching gig and again, they're addressing those "problems."
  25. I'd really prefer to see him in Milwaukee for a couple weeks. I don't really understand the reluctance at this point. We've seen him scrap the leg kick. He's got a new swing, he looks like he's got more plate coverage. He banged up his knee, missed some time, but the bat to ball talent is still so clearly there. He can play 1B or DH. He's not a 2B...unless you absolutely need it, or a LFer, but it's not like Winker gives you position versatility or Tellez does either.
