I thought Yeager was the reliever with the higher upside or more potential. Is he down with TJ? All I see is 7 day MiLB DL for elbow strain and then little else. Would not be hard to imagine him breaking out and becoming a nice reliever for us in the future. The trade worked out great. It certainly wasn't fun last year, but history has proven Stearns right. The ONLY thing that could have proven him more right was if Rogers had pitched up to his ability. I'd argue that Hader hadn't been "blowing up for two months," but he was SO bad right before the trade...3 straight outings giving up an ER, then 9 ERs over two outings while recording just a single out, it was pretty impressive to get what we did out of it.

I think both sides have a LOT of the information before hand. Not exact figures, but pretty good ideas of what they're going to get, what they want, etc...I don't think the Brewers are taking a guy in Rd1 unless they know they can get him under slot, or conversely drafting Pratt if they have no idea how much he's gonna want in bonus money.
-
He's a RFA. His rights don't belong to anyone. The Warriors did offer him a 2-way after the summer league so, they probably saw something. Once they decided to front load Lopez, it was pretty much a certainty. I'm sure they explored trade options before officially signing Lopez...but Houston pushing his contract up in FA was the last realistic chance if they keep Allen and Connaughton. And they kinda need to keep those two after losing Ingles, Carter and being real thin at Guard.

Nightengale Notebook: Is Counsell going to retire?
BrewerFan replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I really doubt he leaves the Brewers for a year or two and then goes and gets a job with another team. If he retires, it'd be to the Brewers FO...and that's where he'd probably have to just go by feel. They find a new manager(maybe it's just Murphy) and I think he'd be back at some point. He's a Brewer. -
Because the "problems" are...relatively minor and being addressed. There is some weird stuff that goes on inside locker rooms. It'd always been my experience you can refuse for the most part, but there's an initiation process. It's like a family. The "car wash" would have been one I'd have refused and the "QB-C snap," but they're testing you and some of it is just stuff you have to go through. I remember being woken up with someone breaking into my dorm room banging pots and kettles making you go run, you have to do the grunt work, that stuff is fine. For as homophobic as locker rooms can be, there's no place with more homoerotic behavior though. That...that is weird. I really don't think they needed a bigger "solve,' than what they'd already come up with. And what's the other issue? A coach being verbally abusive? I don't know what he said, but I don't know, I've had lots of coaches cussing me out and yelling at me. I'd need more context. Of ALL the athletes who went through NU, you had...2 people come forward and it was from 2014 I believe? That tells me this wasn't a culture with rampant hazing. Frats are 10X worse with forcing people to drink just...ridiculous amounts of alcohol. But it's still a B1G coaching gig and again, they're addressing those "problems."

I'd really prefer to see him in Milwaukee for a couple weeks. I don't really understand the reluctance at this point. We've seen him scrap the leg kick. He's got a new swing, he looks like he's got more plate coverage. He banged up his knee, missed some time, but the bat to ball talent is still so clearly there. He can play 1B or DH. He's not a 2B...unless you absolutely need it, or a LFer, but it's not like Winker gives you position versatility or Tellez does either.
-
That trade makes sense. Rodriguez is a really nice prospect. There's some Victor Robles comps there, but I think he'll hit for a higher average. Robles as an actual big leaguer, not as a prospect obviously. Small is the type of guy that teams like the Nats should be looking at. Long list of left handed starters without big velo who take a while to get going. And Urias has been worth nearly 7 WAR the previous two seasons?
-
Are you the reason I caught heat for NOT putting "David Stearns sabotaged the Brewers," while praising him for how he built this system, particularly the LA additions? Or should I just assume this is meant to be in blue? I mean...otherwise, what the heck are you talking about? That package may not get you Garcia and Morrobel, how in the hell is that gonna bring back MAYBE the best hitter in baseball this year AND a top 5 pitcher? Oh, yeah, and a guy who's going to make you a ton of money just because he's associated with your team? Edit-Oh...and IF they can't work out a deal? The Man is probably going to command close to Mark Attanasio's entire net worth...there's not an "if" there.
-
If he makes it clear he won't re-sign, I don't think he will. If he leaves the possibility open in internal talks? It's not kosher, but maybe. Trout and Ohtani having their biggest AB and innings pitched in the WBC is a tragedy for MLB. The Angels seem like they've been after quick fixes for so long to get to the playoffs...and even when things go well, like this year, it all falls apart with a 1-10 stretch up to and right after the ASB. But if you see the Dodgers and everything they've done to get under the luxury tax this year(even with Bauer)...I could see them trying to deal away a guy like Chris Taylor, attach a nice prospect with him, get under the luxury tax and if that happens, that's a CLEAR cut sign to me they're going all in on Ohtani next year. With all their prospects coming up, they could build around him nicely. Spend next year, get back into the 275-280 range, under the Cohen tax, but at Ohtani and a bat or...maybe even Hader and let the young guys fill in as they're ready as they've been doing forever. Seattle is a longshot, but they've got a big Japenese fan base. The Yankees obviously and then the Mets may just throw 700M at him over 12 years and blow the competition away. But my money is on LAD. You could write a novel on all the possible Ohtani outcomes(I think I just did).

Expecting a guy people are REGULARLY referring to as the GREATEST player ever...and then getting a huge headstart on re-signing him to the biggest, most well known team in American sports isn't worth a couple top 50 prospects and a top 100? The Yankees...who don't have a bad farm system BTW, it's just not as good having graduated a couple of elite players off it like Volpe, Peraza and others. The Yankees would have to go Volpe, Dominguez, Beeter, Wells and then if I'm the Angels, I'm trying to put Rendon into the deal. they pay his salary this year and next and then they're done. But no WAY do I think a deal like Frelick, Black, Small and Lara get it done. 2 top 50 and three top 100 MIGHT be a bit much, but Frelick is probably closer to 50 right now, Black gets pushed out of top 100 with the signings. Lara is undervalued at this point, not having played above A and Small? Small is a guy you're HOPING just happens to figure it out and can EVENTUALLY develop into a Wood type pitcher. A hope that's fading at the moment. A team is gonna have to give up at LEAST one difference making prospect IMO and then 3-4 others who vary from top 30 to top 100-again, before the draft signings are factored in.

Yeah. You're getting '08 CC and a '04 Carlos Beltran type player all in one. Or if you want to stick with that 2008 season, CC+Mark Texiera who hit like .360 and was huge for the Angels(and then cost us Trout because he signed with the damn Yankees). A Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling. Max Scherzer and Trea Turner may be the closest in real life, but...he is unprecedented. It's more than just the on field play. I'd bet half a season of him would be HUGE for any fan base. Speaking of which, I wonder how much money he generates for a team? I've seen it's ~30-40M in the interest he brings. I'd have to imagine that could be even higher in a smaller market like Milwaukee. So you could pay him 60M a year and he's WELL worth it...so long as he stays healthy. That's not a "lets do a Bobby Bonilla type deal and defer 40M a year for 40 years," type suggestion, just a passing thought. IF he was actually interested in coming, I wonder how much it'd actually cost the Brewers after you factor in added revenue as a result?
-
LOL...I'm just picturing him interviewing with the stuffy Northwestern Administration in that Bayou accent! And I agree, it wouldn't be a great fit based on the school and the region. I might have misinterpreted your meaning with the 'only coming from one side,' and they're too smart for that as a more general indictment on his coaching ability.
-
If he's upset, it's his fault. He did the Cards a huge favor by opting in. If he'd have opted out, he likely gets more money and the Rockies are off the hook for the additional 20M I believe for opting in? I'd have thought when he opted in, he would have at least gotten an extension from the Cards. Not a long one by any means, but at least tack on a year for saving them money both bidding against other teams and for the money the Rockies were chipping in. That trade was a steal for the Cards and baffling for the Rockies. But as has been pointed out, they "operate in their own little world."

I like Orgeron, but the way you're saying this makes me think you don't think he's a good coach? I have no idea if he is or not, can't say that I watch any of his teams that closely. Seems like he's done a good job taking over talented team. USC, obviously his run at LSU was great...but that he was fired so quickly after is telling. I guess...he had been there for 3 years by then, so it was kind his team. I have watched Leonhard though and I think he'd have been great at UW in a similar way to how Fitz was great at NU. He probably couldn't have elevated them, but Fitzgerald kept them about as competitive as a program with those restraints would allow for. Leonhard would likely have gotten UW back to a double digit win team pretty regularly. I just never would have imagined a combo like Fickel and Longo coming in here. On LaFleur? Nah, I'm happy with him. At least what I've seen. We haven't really seen his whole offense yet, but I think it's been pretty good so far. He's had talent, but he's also had some obstacles. Meanwhile that defense has roughly 19 first round picks(actually 8 that should start) and the last two years it's taken half a year and MLF to publicly comment about how they need to play more aggressive before they start...occasionally playing less than 8 yards off the ball. Though they go back to that in the biggest spots! I was surprised Barry wasn't fired last year. But don't wanna go too deep into Packers talk here.
-
Wow...I'm glad they were able to flip Johnson. That was quicker than I thought. I'm skeptical that he's going to be able to Wrestle and play FB at UW, but probably won't hurt for the first year and should be great for his motor. But as far as NU, they're just in about as bad of a spot as a program can be in. I understand that a lot of players commit because of position coaches or who recruited them, the school itself, etc...but having uncertainty about the HC is a killer. One recruit leaves, you wonder how many others may follow, and that's without even considering who you're currently recruiting. Plus you're entire program is stuck in place for a year until they find out who the HC will be and who's going to be retained on the staff long term. I've seen Leonhard's name attached to NU. That's plausible and would be a massive win for them IMO. I don't think he's in a hurry to jump into a new position, but who knows. He wanted to be a HC. NU is somewhat similar to Madison as they've got high academic standards, it's at least close so it's not like you're moving your family across the country and he'd be familiar with the B1G and many of the recruits. That really would be a home run for them. Though as a Packers fan, I'm still hoping he's the next DC there...one more year, Bucky wins back the Axe and they borrow it to LaFleur to drop it on Joe Barry.

Article: 2023 MLB Draft Day 3 Thread
BrewerFan replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
It can also be a year if you go to a Juco or 2 years if you're an older prep arm, but to your point, Jaden Noot I don't think ever really got into discussions with the Brewers, seemingly made his decision to go to LSU immediately last year and then...surgery, out for the year. Missed out on a year of development. He's still got two years left to get back on the mound and build up value. Jurrangelo Cijntje is another guy. They ended up with roughly 300,000K and change away from going over the 5% of their bonus pool. So he could have signed for roughly 425,000 last year and like Noot, seemingly never considered it. Now he looks like he'll be a draft eligible Soph as a 20 year old Freshmen at Miss State, but he was the Bulldogs Friday Night Starter early on in the SEC season after having a solid start to the season...and he got banged around pretty badly. And it's not like LSU did the damage, it was nearly every outing once SEC play began where he was walking 5, giving up 5ERs or more. I'm not suggesting either won't get picked up again. I actually think the nature of the draft makes College pitchers prime targets in rounds 5-10, especially for the Brewers the last couple years where they signed several for less than 100K or a little over 100K, but he likely passed up ~400K without really considering it(IIRC, both he and Noot announced almost immediately they were going to honor their College commitments). It's also worth noting Cijntje was racking up the strikeouts, so he has plenty of swing and miss, but he's a guy in particular that may have been best served turning pro and working with in the Brewers pitching lab. These kids are also competitors and extremely confident, or they wouldn't be sought after to begin with, so they're betting on themselves to go to these programs and thrive, but that's just clearly not always the case. I saw he matched up with fellow former unsigned picked Hunter Hollan and Holton from Ark and Vandy respectively. Hollan ended up going 76th to Cincy I believe while Holton has been very solid at Vandy and projects as of now, to be a top 20 pick according to some sites(though Cijntje is ranked as high as 65th from what I've seen for the 2024 draft). So it's just such a mixed bag. I take your point, but I think even the talented prep arms that slide due to singability concerns will likely hear their name called again and get a shot in 2-3 years as long as they've got at least ONE pitch a team thinks they can build on. Look at the Brewers last few drafts.- 56 replies

Article: 2023 MLB Draft Day 3 Thread
BrewerFan replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Yeah, I understand signability and all that, I'm saying it's strange to me a highly ranked prep arm(or rated high enough) fell to the 11th round despite being considered "relatively signable." It was more of a rhetorical question, just seems like if he was open to signing and didn't have strong demands...he'd have gone earlier. He wasn't a top 50-100 prospect, so he likely knew he'd go between rounds 4-6? Just slot for the 179th pick would be ~350K. That's 200 vs the bonus? Or he was rated 105 by McDaniel, 205 by Perfect Games... I don't know, that's what I'm saying..."relatively signable," is kinda meaningless. It kinda all depends on where he thought he was gonna go, but he seems excited about getting drafted and I kinda get the feeling from this article that he may be open to signing; https://www.newsandtribune.com/sports/baseball-floyds-letson-expected-to-be-selected-in-mlb-draft/article_d9fa079c-1d16-11ee-90a9-cf1b96afca51.html- 56 replies

"Considered relatively signable." I don't even know what that means. Why does a kid drop to the 11th round if he's signable? Anyway...I like it. I like all prep arms later on(or early for that matter).- 56 replies

Yeah, it's a VERY nice chunk of change. Not what an NFL rookie would make, but, a Heisman caliber season could push him into ~2M(I've heard he was close to a million, but it feels like these are always exaggerated a little save for the top LSU Gymnast, Arch and the top 5-10 names). He wouldn't be the first guy to stick around when he could leave, but again, he's set up to maximize his earning potential after re-classifying in HS. I'd guess he'd be one of the youngest in the 2024 draft. I'm not sure it's gonna matter. It doesn't seem like the Badgers will be so dependent upon their RB talent.
-
First thought is Dillon Johnson who was projected to go to Wisconsin. I think this is a program killer for Northwestern. They could have simply followed through on what they'd planned, made the Fitz aware of it and they'd have taken a hit, but that would have been the best way to deal with it...IMO. This is going to crush them. I never understood this type of nonsense, but it's also EXTREMELY common. That's not a justification, but you have two whistleblowers over 17 years and you dump the guy? Doesn't seem like the strongest way to solve the problem, to end it....? Anyway, not our problem. Now lets pillage and plunder the rats from that sinking ship!
-
Welll, especially if he's going to walk at that type of rate! More walks than strikeouts? Thought we were moving away from the 3TO type players. More contact, speed...but you need some middle of the lineup thump! Like this pick that much better when you combine it with the two prep SS's we took...and appear likely to sign. I don't remember the thread, but a Brewers scout commented and said something along the lines of, "Glad we got him, one of the most impressive kids in his 30 years as a Brewers scout." Seems unlikely a scout says this without a high level of confidence we can sign him.

Yeah, but Frelick went for a bit over slot. They missed on Biggio, Hollan and Holtan, but they got Low, Vire, Avina-who I really like as a longshot. Looking back on that draft, obviously I hope we do better, but if we hit on the top 2 picks and then 2 years from now have a 3rd performing like Carlos Rodriguez, I'll be thrilled. Frelick top ~20 prospect, Black just became a top 100 in one of them. Again, that'll all shuffle after this weekend. I think the top 5 picks will all become top ~40 prospects immediately. I'd even say top 25, but Is that likely? Seems like a bit much and I've never paid much attention to how quickly 1st rounders are placed in the top 100, but this was an extraordinary draft. But hey, maybe we'll take another swing at one of those three who got away?- 195 replies

Allen has played this just about perfectly. Hope he has a big year and can go into the draft at 20 years old. I'm not quite as high on him as I think others are. I like JT, Gordon, and a few others better, but maybe that's partly because Allen is still so young. I'd think he's a Rd2/3 pick at the moment with a chance to move into the late 1st/early 2nd if he can show some pass catching ability in this scheme. He was a safety coming into School and had good ball skills. I suppose it could also mean he's making a LOT of money in NIL, but I'd tell any College RB projected to go in the first or second day to leave.
