  1. Great job by Henderson in that mess of a 9th inning. Some closer mentality on display there. Edit: insert blue color
  2. 11 Ks through 10 IP for the pitching staff. Looks like they've picked up where they left off last season.
  3. Thanks for the update. Never cared for McCarver as a broadcaster. Never understood how he ever was considered a Number 1 color guy by the networks. And I found his pairing with Joe Buck to be nearly insufferable. But he did it his way, and to make a career of it is worthy of respect.
  4. Scoreless draw at the Azteca in World Cup qualifying? Thank you very much. Excellent defensive performance by the undermanned roster. Just a bit lucky with a PK not given to Mexico on Edu's challenge late in 2nd half. Work is needed on offensive performance; no chances were really created. Talent disparity showed there, but the scoreboard still ended 0-0.
  5. This should be the link to highlights of the match:
  6. Blizzard ball at the USA-Costa Rica qualification match. Denver is getting a lot of snow. Will be a big contrast to the weather conditions in Mexico City on TUE. Edit: A hard fought 1-0 win in the Hexagonal. If you were watching the basketball, you've got to see video of the match. A bit surreal, like watching winter playground soccer, but with world-class players.
  7. Perhaps OWBC's post is a bit philosophical, but after reading what he wrote, it's nearly exactly what's been bouncing around my head with the PED issue. Thanks for putting it in a written form that's easy to understand and makes sense.
  8. The Hour had its second series on BBC America back in the Fall. There were two series of six episodes. The first one started slowly, but was good, worth getting through the slow start; the second series started faster, but I liked the story line of the first series better. There had been plans for a third series, but it was canceled. At some point, you should be able to find it via Netflix or some other type of rental service. Perhaps it's still available via on-demand; that's how I watched the first series, but Verizon FIOS doesn't have it available any more. Some people I know have Comcast, and their on-demand viewing keeps shows available a bit longer.
  9. I've watched it since it premiered and enjoy it a lot. Unfortunately, there is only one more episode until 2014. (That's the different thing about British series: they are usually 6-8 episodes in length compared to 13 or 26 here.) I watch a good bit of British programming. Family in the UK recommend good shows that end up over here via BBC America, PBS, or video. Writing seems a lot better than most American TV dramas.
  10. Torts is the guy to give you PIT tips. Someone else on the board lives down in the BAL/DC area. But here's my thoughts from living near Harrisburg, PA and frequent visits to both BAL and DC: The 4 hour drive to PIT on JUN 30 should be pretty easy, just a matter of wanting to drive. You may encounter some heavy traffic coming back on JUL 1, depending upon the amount of people headed east on the PA Turnpike. But you'll hit the interchange toward DC before getting near any real mess. [it's the holiday week, and the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg happens that week also.] Do note that you will be taking the PA Turnpike, so remember to have cash money for the tolls. I'm assuming you won't have an EZ-Pass. It's helpful to have a hotel that is a short drive to a Metro stop for attending anything in DC. Nationals Ballpark is right off the Navy Yards stop on the Green Line. You won't have to deal with driving in DC and trying to find a parking spot. [i'd suggest something near Greenbelt, MD, where the Green Line ends. It's not too far from BWI--assuming you're flying in there. It won't be that far for driving from BAL after your game at Camden Yards. Driving and parking down in BAL isn't much of an issue; it's a pain in DC.] Hope that helps. Others can give their thoughts.
  11. Very impressive start to a sprint of a season. Points from every game, winning the vast majority of them. Would like to see that dominance that runs through June.
  12. Welcome back, Geno! Great to see the name and the post. It's like the Fastball boards on the late-90s again.
  13. Replay on Fox Soccer Channel, starting at 11pm (ET).
  14. Good match with Borussia Dortmund traveling to the Ukraine to play Shakhtar Donetsk. Germans should have the edge in the return leg.
  15. My ballot: Bagwell Biggio Lofton Piazza Raines Smith Trammell Don't want to touch the whole steroids matter this year. Larry Walker is hurt by not achieving the "magic plateau" numbers (383 HRs, 2160 Hs). Under 400 HRs and 2500 hits; say what you want about more advanced stats, those old school categories are still going to be noticed by many of the writers. Another season or two may have gotten him off the HOF bubble. "Why Bagwell and not Walker?" could be an interesting question to answer; how much do ballpark factors creep into it (Olympic Stadium, Coors Field, Old Busch Stadium vs. Astrodome and Minute Maid Park). Not exactly sure what to do with Edgar Martinez. Brings up the whole DH debate, since his career was ~75% as a DH in terms of career games played. Steve Finley, Julio Franco, Don Mattingly, Fred McGriff, Dale Murphy, and Bernie Williams all get enshrined into the Hall of Very Good.
  16. Anyone have an official time length on the Game 4 national anthem? Always can tell by the tempo of the first few bars how much embellishment and lengthening the anthem is going to get.
  17. St. Louis Rasputins.....unbelievable. Went from a chance to possibly see an Orioles/Nationals World Series at the beginning of the day to a probable Yankees/Cardinals matchup at the end. (There was a good bit of anticipation of BAL/WAS here in Central PA.) Calling it a full season and checking out until 2013 sounds good to me.
  18. I believe that "4th and 5th best records" in Danzig's post refers to those teams that qualified for the playoffs: the 3 division winners and the 2 wild cards would be ranked 1-5; #4 & #5 would be in the play-in game regardless of how they qualified for the playoffs. Should that mean two division winners playing each other, so be it. It's certainly an intriguing thought to tweak the current system. I'd be more interested in scrapping divisions and having a balanced schedule like JohnBriggs suggested above. Though I might suggest having 5 teams qualify with #4 & #5 having a play-in game.
  19. I'm 99% certain that KIA and Hyundai are actually owned by the same Korean conglomerate company. So would you actually be getting a car from a different company? Quite a few of their models look very similar, too (e.g. Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage). Not sure that helps your decision or not, just saying.
