  1. I miss that version of Villar. Can he please stay awhile? I'll even live with the dumb baserunning of 2016 if he can still do everything else from 2016 too.
  2. I'm all for enforcing "indisputable", but yeah. Maybe the discussion in New York was, "I assume that Adam Duvall has fingers, but I've never actually seen them in person myself. Not indisputable."
  3. If Hader achieved those projections, he would absolutely shatter the NL record of 154 K's in a season by a reliever, and break the MLB record of 181 by over 30. I'm guessing he would break numerous other records like K/9. So I guess I'm saying, as awesome as it is, I doubt it's sustainable on this level. But I would say yes, if he came close he should absolutely be considered for Cy Young and MVP, given that those numbers would blow away Dennis Eckersely's 1992 MVP and Cy Young season. Like any other year it would also depend on team performance and what the other candidates look like.
  4. Pet peeve: Umpires who expand the strike zone on 3-0 counts and shrink it on 0-2 counts. Why do they do this?
  5. I can't tell if the Reds batting the pitcher 8th is strategy or if Billy Hamilton just sucks that much.
  6. Doubt it, I think Phillips is just a temporary move for an extra bat. And Braun and Aguilar don't match up as platoon partners.
  7. People who don't say "Thank you" when you open a door for them are the absolute worst.
  8. The problem with many modern statistics is that people take them too literally sometimes and just run with it, especially WAR. I've been totally guilty of that myself. You're right, it's very hard to quantify Hader's value in terms of wins and losses.
  9. That's the thing. I don't believe people are properly valuing Hader as a reliever vs. as a starter. I also don't believe WAR is going to properly value him. People see 175 innings from him as a starter and 90-100 as a reliever and just assume, "175 is more than 90-100, so he's more valuable as a starter." It's not that simple. At least I don't believe it is. I can't properly evaluate how much it means to be able to pick and choose your spots with him, but I believe our front office is trying to do so. We have a very analytically driven F.O. and these short hooks for starters and long innings for the pen are not a coincidence. And for the most part, it's working. The fact that we are sitting at 17-13 with the 5th WORST offense in baseball is a testament to how perfectly the pitching staff has been managed. Ironically, the biggest selling point to me on how much value Hader has as a reliever is a very simple stat -- we are 11-0 in games when he is used. What would our record be in those games without him? Its impossible to say, but consider that almost all 11 of those games are, by design and how we like to use him, very close and competitive games. And we've won them all, large in part to what he brings to the pen.
  10. I think this is spot on. Hader may actually be the mold for what the future holds for baseball’s elite relievers. The role he currently holds is arguably more valuable than an every 5th day starter role. I totally agree. I believe at one time, in another ERA, when relievers weren't as specialized, when starters went their 200+ innings and relievers went an inning at most unless you were a long man, Josh Hader would have been much more valuable as a starter. I believe that has changed, and I don't believe that modern traditional and sabermetrical stats have completely caught up yet in a way to really be able to evaluate what Hader brings to this pen and how much he improves the rest of the pen just by reducing everyone else's role. Here's an old school stat, the Brewers are 11-0 in games that they use Josh Hader. 11, and 0. And he's obviously only being used in crucial, tight games, not blowouts. So what do you imagine our record is in those 11 games if he's not pitching in them?
  11. I cannot believe that everyone's reaction to this performance is just "Why isn't he in the rotation?!?!" Hader is awesome at what he does and he's winning games at what he does. The lines between starter and reliever are becoming more and more blurred and will continue to be so. Hader himself believes this is the role he can best excel. I cannot fathom why anyone who has watched Hader help us win games the way he has this year would think for a second that he's being "wasted".
  12. 170 innings of even 4ish ERA pitching is more valuable than what the best relievers usually do every year. Trevor Bauer as example was 176IP of 4.19 ERA 10 k/9, which is a fair Hader comp and that was worth 3.2 WAR, only 2 relief pitchers topped that last year (Kimbrel at 3.3 and Jansen at 3.6). He doesn’t even need to be that great as a starter to provide more value than a reliever. WAR is horribly flawed for pitchers, even worse for relievers. So much information missing. If you would rather have Josh Hader as a 4 ERA starter than doing what he's doing in the role he is in now I would highly urge you to reconsider how you're using and evaluating WAR. Junior Guerra who didn't have a spot in the rotation a few weeks ago can probably give you 170 innings of a 4 ERA. The only way you ever consider moving Hader to the rotation is to find out if he can be the next Chris Sale, not to get Jhoulys Chacin production.
  13. I no longer agree that Hader would be more valuable as a starter. He can be used in almost any situation and could give us 100 of some of the most valuable innings we have all season. I would much rather have that than 170 random innings every 5 days. He is perfect for the role he is in and is very valuable for us in what he does. He is not being used as a 'middle reliever.'
  14. No reason not to be throwing our best relievers at them now. They're plenty rested.
  15. Santana, if you are ever going to come through this season, now would be a good time.
  16. I don't know how it looked live, but Gameday shows that ball 4 full count pitch to Braun being way, way in the zone.
  17. It absolutely never fails. The pitching carries the offense for days, and the day the offense finally puts a few runs on the board, the pitching falls apart.
  18. Someone once told me that a pitching coach can make a ton of difference and a hitting coach makes very little. Don't know how much truth there is to that. Still ready for Coles to go regardless.
  19. 1) It looks like Stearns was 100% right to make heavy off-season investments in hitters, not pitchers. 2) It still didn't make a difference.
  20. Every 3rd game? He was the LH bat in a 1B platoon. He started 75-80% of games and his production is definitely missed.
  21. Really? They've been shut out 6 times already which is pretty alarming to me in a month. If they had a recent offensive success the past few years I'd be less concerned but they have a pretty established track record the last few years of mediocre offenses.
  22. I'm curious, RickH. You're about to enter Miller Park for a Brewers/Cubs game. Some rich and eccentric and slightly crazy fan in a Cubs jersey approaches you and says, "Those are the seats I need. I'll give you 100 grand, cash, for your tickets right now." You say....?
