  1. Well said, 88. If we're trading Prince, its hopefully not just for the betterment of the team in 2010. Its for the betterment of the team in 2011-2015. The Texas deal would be a haul and a half for 2 years of Prince. I'd hope DM would do that in a heartbeat. Smoak is the real deal, and he's going to be the next big thing.
  2. I'd really love to keep both of them, they are cheap and above average... and who knows if Weeks can come back at anywhere near 100% after his 2nd major wrist injury.
  3. Despite his "troubles hitting" this year, he's still kept a .380 OBP and the fans have chosen to blame him for the Cubs struggles and not the .300 obp of their left fielder & leadoff hitter for the next 6 years.... Soriano.
  4. I'd rather go into the season with Weeks, McGeehee, Counsell and Gamel filling 3b/2b, and having a backup SS... than having Lopez and his awful defense playing 2b and backing up SS.
  5. From http://bases.nbcsports.com/2009/09/when-is-a-strikeout-just-like-any-other-out-always.html.php "Among all hitters with at least 400 plate appearances this season, the 10 guys who strike out most often have an average OPS of .938 and the 10 guys who strike out least often have an average OPS of .753." So, yeah. I'll take the guys who strike out. You can't compare a foregone conclusion over one that hasn't been determined yet. The chance of a hit is always better than an out. This isn't little league where the guys who strike out all the time can't hit.
  6. World Series appearances are much more random than a playoff appearance or number of wins over 162 game season. WS appearances are based on being really good for 10-12 games. I'd imagine every team in baseball has won 7 of 12 this year. That's all it takes to make the WS once you're in the playoffs. Admittedly the competition is tougher... but, just look at last year, the Cubs and Dodgers were the two best teams by far, according to... everyone.
  7. He looked good last night. Not sure what he throws, specifically, but his slider/curveball just looked nasty watching the bottom drop out of it.
  8. Chris Hayes becomes Rule 5 eligible this year if the Royals don't put him on their 40 man roster -- and being the Royals, they probably won't. I'd love to see the Brewers take a shot at him, he's a good bullpen arm for cheap, who just keeps getting guys out. I know a lot of people around here hated RJ Swindle, and Hayes has similar stuff, his FB is only 78 MPH, but he pounds the zone, and gets a ton of groundballs. I could very well see him filling the 6th-7th inning role that McClung & Villanueva filled this year. Pos on Disco Disco's Blog
  9. I use http://www.fansnap.com/team/milwaukee-brewers/events which scans bunches of online ticket sales sites. I love it. And... if I were in town, I'd be going to every game I could. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  10. From the reports I've read, he's basically been playing on one knee for half the year, which can't help his range.... even with that, he moves better than Lopez has as a Brewer.
  11. The union would be for it as long as it meant more money going into the players pockets. Its the "big four" (or 6, or 8...) that would be completely against it. The Yankees see no need to share their TV revenues with every other team (neither do the Red Sox), and therefor any salary cap would end up with less money in the system being paid out to the players.
  12. From http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2009/03/20062008_payrol.php http://baseballanalysts.com/Payroll%20Efficiency%20with%20Polynomial%20Trendline.png There's the graph of avg wins vs avg payroll. Pretty strong correlation between more money = more wins. 9 of the top 10 in payroll had higher than average win totals, the only one who didn't was the Mariners. You can't go by World Series appearances, as that truly is a fluke.
  13. Money, money, money, money and money. The Blue Jays, Rays and Orioles will not be giving up their extra games against the Red Sox and Yankees and the sellouts those bring. The travel complaints are trivial, but it really comes down to the money in the game refusing to allow this sort of thing to happen. They like the imbalance, why would they want it to change?
  14. Yes, when players being drafted get to determine what team they go to, instead of the teams determining what players they want something is very wrong with the draft system.
  15. It doesn't hurt that they signed the best player in baseball for 8 yrs/111 million.
  16. The answer is 87. In 591 PA. With a .343 OBP. Craig Counsell and Jason Kendall both being pretty horrid in the leadoff spot for about 1/3rd of the seasons PA's.
  17. Starting Hardy over Escobar at any point the rest of the year shouldn't happen, especially if his reasoning is, "Escobar hasn't faced him before." Starting Counsell over Gamel shouldn't happen either. The season is over, its a travesty. I can't fault his handling of the pitching staff, especially after watching Yost the last two years. But his utter refusal to play the younger guys when this team needed them to contribute --not just this year, but next year as well--is just unacceptable.
  18. When they get career years out of two pitchers in the same season, and make a trade for a guy who comes over and hits like Babe Ruth for 2 months....
  19. So its okay to have a totally staged and planned celebration, throw your helmet, and then punch each other in a big pile... while jumping up and down.... But its not okay to have everyone fall down? I just don't get it.... the attitude of "Our team doesn't do it, so it shouldn't be done." is stupid. I wonder if they complained the first time A-Rod or Big Papi threw their helmet off after rounding 3rd base on a walk off.
  20. Powdered gatorade stains the skin worse than any substance known to man. Its one of the disturbing trends at ultimate tournaments I used to play in. Instead of someone getting dumped with gatorade, they get dumped with orange powder... and are orange for a week.
  21. Serious question... why are BB weighted differently than HBP?
  22. My point was that they were in first place before they had to start their 7th through 10th best starting pitchers, and before Dave Bush got hurt, and jumped his ERA nearly 2 full runs in 6 starts. I don't remember one person before the season that Manny Parra would be one of the worst pitchers in baseball. Get the team through 6 or 7 innings, stay in the game, and hand the game over to the plethora of solid and not-overworked relievers. That was the plan. The 5 pitchers were good enough to compete to win the division if they pitched up to expectations and stayed healthy. The problem is, none of them have. Gallardo has struggled to get through 6 innings in the majority of starts, Parra has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball, Suppan and Bush have both been horrid since their injuries showed up. If you want to call me naive because all ten (I think that's where the number is at now) starters the Brewers have used have underperformed individually and as a result, burned out the once lights out bullpen, then I suppose I'm naive. If you honestly thought the Brewers would have the 2nd worst ERA in the league, nearly a quarter run worse than 14th place Pittsburgh, then you're a better prognosticator than I am. Especially after they were middle of the pack at the end of May.
  23. Well, the Cardinals staged celebration all revolves around them trying to punch and grope one another after a walk off.
  24. I love that even Ed Sedar got in the act.
  25. The same 5 guys who had the team in first place on the 4th of July. It wasn't the initial rotation that was the problem, it was the depth. When the 6th and 7th (and 8th, and 9th and 10th) starters didn't perform, that's when the bullpen became overworked and the staff started to fall apart.
