  1. By 10 points over Wheeler, 151-141.
  2. I think of losing Piña as similar to losing Hernán Pérez. It felt like the loss of a long-tenured, well-liked role player at the time, but we basically forgot about the guy after he was gone. Obviously Piña is more valuable than Pérez, but he's also turning 35 next year and, similar to Pérez, likely has his best years behind him. I also hope he returns as a coach in the future.
  3. I grew up going to Marquette games and then went to university in Madison. So of course I like both teams but am more loyal to the Badgers. I'm just glad that we no longer have Wojoball and Gardball at the same time because both styles of play are horrible to watch. I'll probably watch more Marquette this year because yesterday won't be the last time they cause problems for a top-ranked team. The end of yesterday's game was painful to watch, except for Marquette's hustle, which was phenomenal. They got us talking about Marquette again which is exciting. The hallmark of the Wojo era was that Marquette got worse as the season went on. I have a feeling we'll see a different Marquette team in February and March.
  4. Seagull At first I was like pigeon? But that’s a sky rat, not a carp.
  5. What is a sky carp?
  6. I've noticed that different time zones do things at different times. For example, I noticed that in all three of my Central Time zone based jobs, most people start work at 8AM. But for the people I've worked with in Detroit (GM, Ford, etc.) often started at 9AM. I'm assuming at least part of that is because TV shows run at the same time in those timezones (news at 10PM central/11PM eastern), but maybe there are other reasons local areas seem to trend differently like that. Definitely, in my experience the Midwest runs an hour earlier than the rest of the country. I noticed it when I briefly lived on the east coast. On the west coast it varies...some people have to get up early if their company has offices on the east coast. But generally the work culture of the Pacific NW is way more laid back, I think it's more accurate to say that people start work later and leave work earlier than elsewhere
  7. I like the 4-team playoff as well. In my view the CFP isn't "real" college football, it's just a spectacle for making money like the rest of the bowl system. Bowl games are not "real" college football games, they are made-for-TV exhibition games played at neutral sites in nice weather. It's still fun, but nobody gets excited about NY6 games anymore and the Mayo bowl and others are basically a joke, at least for teams that began the season with playoff ambitions. If they are going to do 8 teams, I want the first round played at campus stadiums. Otherwise the whole thing will just be another round of meaningless bowl games with the Big Ten team being the road team every time while the SEC teams treat the games as warm ups for the semifinals.
  8. That’s ridiculous, I’m still in bed some days at 7:30 and I manage to get my kid to daycare and start work by 8:45-9. I just looked it up at the high school here (Seattle) starts at 8:45. I would have been mad if it was earlier than 8:30.
  9. I know Northwestern is bad, but this team has clearly gotten so much better than a month or two ago.
  10. Last year it took them almost 30 games to start playing well. They will pass the overachieving teams at the top by Christmas.
  11. It’s going to be Wisconsin vs Ohio State, isn’t it?
  12. It’s a straight up salary dump. Reds going into full on tank mode I suppose. I can’t blame their fans for being livid.
  13. I take the opposite perspective. BA’s career has advanced far beyond the point where he needs to be doing play-by-play for a small market team like the Brewers. The fact that both sides are willing to make a deal like this is a testament to their mutual respect for each other and BA’s love for calling Brewers games. A third of the games called by BA is better than zero, especially since none of the alternatives are as good as BA.
  14. I haven’t read such a ridiculous whataboutism on this forum since the Ryan Braun thread. Unbelievable. They guy is literally a threat to the health of the reporters in the room. And then you combine the recklessness with the brazen attitude. And throw it on top of all the other selfish drama this guy has put the franchise through.
  15. This story is amazing. I love every bit of it. It's like we're living a real-life version of Ted Lasso.
  16. Honestly when I saw Ryan Braun trending on Twitter I figured the Brewers had hired him to be a coach or something.
  17. Cincinnati probably should join a better conference if they want to be in the playoff. LOL. The committee will probably put 2-loss teams ahead of them if they have to.
  18. Going to be interesting to see the Giants' strategy propagate around baseball. It also appears that batters are getting better at putting balls in play against the shift. And strikeouts were finally down in 2021 -- maybe some of that can be attributed to the sticky stuff crackdown, but at least anecdotally it appears that defensive hitting with 2 strikes is seeing a resurgence. Interesting stuff for sure.
  19. There's so much randomness to the postseason that it isn't worth lingering on it too much. The Brewers are 0 for 6 in making the World Series this century, but the Braves were 0 for 12 prior to this year. And then they make it to the World Series with a team that likely ranks near the bottom of those 13 groups in terms of talent.
  20. Let's stick to sports on this forum please!
  21. Sure, it's not that easy, everyone knows that. But in any walk of life, whether it's business, sports, whatever it is, isn't the idea to maximize your opportunity when it presents itself and put yourself in the BEST possible position to be the best in the end?? You invest in the opportunity to be great, not the guarantee you will be(there is no guarantee). It can only go one of two ways...it will either work, or it won't. It's that simple. But I can tell you this, when you DON'T do everything that you possibly can to even put yourself in that position, the opportunity to be the best, the odds that you'll become the best in the end are...minimal at best. How is what you are describing different from the way the Brewers currently operate? This is literally their plan. They are the most opportunistic team in MLB. They have gone against the mold more often than not with generally successful results. Your beef starts and ends with the amount of money that Mark Attanasio is willing to spend. That's a completely separate topic from what's being done from Stearns/Arnold and down.
  22. Yes. But generally if someone is hiring they need someone who can solve a problem NOW. Much easier to find someone with direct experience than to do the harder thing and make committed investments to employees, or think beyond a quarter or two from now. My partner recently had this exact thing happen with her team -- the two final candidates were a "rockstar" but without direct experience and a second person who had a less-impressive resume but direct experience. Who did the team want? The second candidate, of course, because that person could make their jobs easier on day 1. My partner did successfully convince them to take the first candidate, but it took some persuasion. By the way, personal update, after several instances of bad luck in the interview process I am finally in the process of negotiating a job offer! Interestingly, this job is 100% remote, the nearest office is several states away. It's a team of 20 and there are people in about 10 different states in every time zone. I think that's the new reality and I'm pretty happy about it, although I think at some point we're going to need a bigger house with dedicated offices--currently my office doubles as a guest bedroom.
  23. I'm willing to lose a full season if the resulting CBA significantly improves the sport. Since that's not going to happen, and both sides are fully aware of the implications of delaying the season, I expect they will agree to some sort of "business as usual" deal in late February.
  24. The Nets should eventually figure things out, Kyrie will get vaccinated, and they are the only group that could seriously threaten a healthy Bucks team in a 7-game series. The rest of these teams might over-achieve enough to become the latest “Bucks in 6” victim like the Hawks last year. I’d like to see the Bucks get the 1-seed this year.
  25. 2 on base 8 th inning - 3 runs up
