  1. We'll never live to see a total level playing field for income/salary distribution, but what about a system that allows teams to hang onto their stars a little while longer? The MLBPA would probably never go for an NFL-style "franchise-tag" because the player could potentially lose out on hundreds of millions of guaranteed dollars they would get in the open market. But what about expanding the team control over a player from 6 years of service time to 7 or 8? The trade-off would be that players would be eligible for salary arbitration after 2 years, instead of 3. A very small percentage of players make it long enough to cash in on these huge deals, but most members of the union will benefit from getting a bump from the minimum after just a couple of years. It may entice bigger stars to sign long-term deals with their own clubs, rather than assuming the risk of waiting it out.
  2. Hardballtalk has a new post up saying that the Dodgers and Greinke are closing in on a 6 year, $145 million deal.
  3. Interesting. What are your thoughts on the Hollow Earth theory?
  4. Even though this deal is dead, it sure seems like the Angels are operating under the impression that they are going to lock down Greinke after dealing Santana and trying to dump Haren.
  5. I don't know if Justice League will happen, but I'd imagine they would have to reboot the Superman franchise first.
  6. Arizona is on the hook for $13 of the remaining $21 million owed to Bell.
  7. The fan reaction to the infield fly rule being invoked makes me shudder at the thought of what would have happened if the Golden Tate "catch" would have happened at Lambeau.
  8. Our basement flooded after a record rainfall five years ago, which only had one side finished at the time. It was early spring so the ground hadn't completely thawed yet which caused the sump pump to back up since it had place to discharge the water. I spent days sucking up water from the carpet with a shop-vac. Shortly after that, I purchased a water sensor (I think the brand name was Basement Watchdog) for about $10 at a Home Depot. It's a little gray box that has a couple of metal sensors on the bottom that sends out a screech when it becomes wet. I placed it next to the floor drain which was next to our water heater in the unfinished side of the basement. Not many weeks later while I was at work and my wife was just about to leave for her job, she heard the screech and ran downstairs to find that the bottom of the water heater had rusted out and was gushing water. Thankfully she heard it and was able to shut off the water intake valve. Had we not had that sensor, the basement would have been completely flooded. Best $10 I ever spent. It is similar to this: http://www.basementwatchdog.com/water_alarm.htm
  9. Norm doing the news, and especially his constant coverage of the OJ Simpson trial. I'll never forget what he said the week after the verdict. "Well, it's official. Murder is legal in California." It was one of the things that eventually got him fired from the show.
  10. "I'm just a simple caveman lawyer. The modern world confuses and frightens me. But there's one thing I do know, and that is the fact that my client is innocent of all charges."
  11. My grandfather was a baseball fanatic who worked at the Blatz brewery and went to County Stadium to watch the Braves after work. Unfortunately, he died a young man in 1956, 24 years before I was born and just one year before the Braves won the World Series. So I would go back in time, pick him up, and travel to Game 5 of the World Series in 1957 (last game played in Milwaukee that series). And then watch Game 7 with him at a bar.
  12. Alternate scenario: Melvin decides to pull the trigger on acquiring Furcal. Cardinals don't make the postseason in 2011.
  13. I'm almost positive that Todd Coffey used the Ultimate Warrior's theme music.
  14. Most of you already know this, but this was part of a testimony that George Lucas gave before congress in 1988 after Ted Turner bought up old film libraries and began re-releasing black and white classics in color for profit. Basically, 1988 George Lucas would be pretty pissed at current day George Lucas. I can't explain in words how much my blood boils to see Hayden Christensen at the end of Return of the Jedi. It doesn't even make sense! What, he didn't age at all? In the afterlife, do we take on a younger form? Then why not have Ewan McGregor superimposed at the end as Obi-Wan Kenobi and a less than 900 year old Yoda? AGH!
  15. Wasn't that Braun's job?No, he was "Deputy" GM, and his role came with a badge.
  16. What would they rename the Dew Deck? The Sprite Spot? Barq's Bleachers? Canada Dry Deck?
  17. This is as random and pointless as it gets for those who don't care about such things, but I just met Aaron Rodgers and Graham Harrell. We initiated them as honorary members of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at St. Norbert's chapter.
  18. I wonder if Team America is among that DVD collection. I wonder if Hans Blix will attend the funeral. He was always breaking his balls. An Extract from “The Official History of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea” Where did you find this? It's comedy cold.
  19. I like the move, depending on the contract terms. The $2.5 million for the posting fee isn't much of a gamble since 1st round draft picks are huge gambles and they get that all the time. Selfishly I wish they could have hung onto Saito, since the MLB network could have come up with a sweet reality show starring their interpreters.
  20. Details. So with two young 1B prospects in Yonder Alonso and Anthony Rizzo (acquired in the Gonzalez deal with the Red Sox), I'd have to think that one of them is available. Would either be an upgrade over Gamel, or would that just be treading water?
  21. If Braun is out for 50 games, should we just start the firesale now with Greinke, Marcum, Wolf, Hart, etc? We're screwed. Good thing we don't have him under contract for 10 years so we can distance ourselves.
  22. That's what I was thinking. He goes on to say they haven't even made an offer to Fielder, because he knows Boras will just shop it around for someone else to beat. They have no interest in officially setting the market or starting the bidding on Fielder. They've been burnt or used by agents in the past because of that. I think they plan on just watching the situation at least through the winter meetings in case the market for Fielder doesn't develop as predicted (very unlikely). It would be a PR nightmare in the very improbable scenario that Fielder has to settle for something like 4/$75 and they had already written him out of their plans. I don't think they'll really get in the bidding unless he's close to signing with the Cubs, which will be another PR nightmare if they appear to be just letting him go without a fight. I definitely don't think they should sign Fielder to a franchise-crippling deal, I'm just saying the fan backlash will be pretty severe if he ends up playing for the Cubs while our biggest signing ends up being bringing Yuni back.
  23. Sounds like at least one team bid on Nakajima. HBT brought up the Brewers as a possibility, so they either missed/ignored Melvin's last comments. Although if you were bidding a player, you probably wouldn't be making that public knowledge.
